Village Leader Ian called in to see Mr Poźnan a week before the flower show. He sold him raffle tickets and asked if he’d enter something from his garden. Mr Poźnan entered his rhubarb even though he’s been unwell for a long time now.
I saw Mr Poźnan on the morning of The Show.
His eyes are always twinkling and are a watery blue like Auntie Glad’s,
And he always has a gentle smile on his face, even when his hip pained him, as he walks
His rhubarb, as it turned out, was a winning class, which tickled him and his wife
Before judging, he gently held my elbow and guided me to a quiet corner of the hall.
He was serious and straight to the point
And how I didn’t cry then and there , God only knows
“ I hear your job is under threat ? he whispered with only a hint of accent “ do you need any money?”
I looked at him silently and his blue eyes nodded “ Just say and it’s yours” he added kindly
I could only smile awkwardly, my lips tight and sensing my emotion ,
He squeezed my elbow and whispered again
“ Your trousers are inside out by the way “
And he was right, my trendy linen pants from Madrid were indeed inside out
I was about to get teary eyed, too, but your trousers were inside out!
ReplyDeleteThey were indeed x
DeleteYou make us cry then make us laugh. Inside out!? At the whole day long flower show? Oh John. [but no one cared bec it was just so ''you'']. What a kind man Mr P is---I was reading, afraid he'd passed away, perhaps clutching his blue ribbon rhubarb.
ReplyDeleteNo only in the morning set up lizzy , I nipped to the loo when the judges turned up
DeleteI wonder if he had doubts about which to mention first, the money or the trousers? xx
ReplyDeleteHe never wavered in both ,
DeleteJesus H Christ !
ReplyDeleteJohn ……more fucking tears and it’s not even vodka time here

DeleteI generally don’t comment, but this is lovely and funny and yes— your book would bring joy and tears to many souls. That is if you choose to write one.
ReplyDeleteI don’t comment either, but I’m sobbing like a silly mare over one old man’s kindness

ReplyDeleteI do too, very much
DeleteI also thought you were going to say he had died! What a lovely man, with a wonderful face, full of having lived a life. And such quiet kindness. A man to have at your back. BUT! This story and how you tell it just supports and proves what we all keep telling you - set to and write the book! We all need it, and so does the rest of the world. They just don't know it yet!
ReplyDeleteThe photo isn’t him btw , but almost x
DeleteHow sweet is that. In every way.
ReplyDeleteIn every bloody lovely way
DeleteDidn’t he offer to buy your house when the professor left

DeleteTrousers inside out? I hope you weren't wearing your underpants on the outside.
ReplyDeleteNever
DeleteBeyond kind and such a lovely gesture (including the trousers). I'm puddled up but attempting to get a grip. I'm sure you're tired of hearing us all nag, but you really do have a wonderful book in your future John, should you so choose. X
ReplyDeleteI wish I believed that was true
DeleteWhat wonderful, loving people you have in your village.
ReplyDeleteI do , I so do

ReplyDeleteSusan M/ Calif.
I cried that night when I relived the day
DeleteOh, John, what a treasure Mr. Pozman is and my tears turned to laughs about your trousers. Oops!
ReplyDeleteDo remember his kind offer if push comes to shove and it's one for your book, of course.
Big hugs!
I will never accept but it nurtured me so much
DeleteYou are living in a grand and caring community.
ReplyDeleteMr. Poznan, is very thoughtful, kind and generous.
Fingers crossed that all will be well with your job. Sadly, today there are no guarantees.
Sadly not 😕😕😕😕😕😕😪
DeleteLove Mr. Pozman as I’m sure you do, too. He may have his challenges but nothing wrong with his heart or his eyes!
ReplyDeleteHe’s a lovely man , man in the truest

HIs kindness and offered generosity speaks volumes of how much you mean to your friends and the community. You are truly blessed. Note: Always check to make sure your pants are not on inside out. I can attest it is easy to do wearing leggings. Keep on Keeping on! Love, Galestorm
ReplyDeleteI’m my defence I was up at 5.30 that morning xxx
DeleteMy mother held a superstition that if an item of clothing goes on inside out, It's lucky and must stay that way all day... (back to front was unlucky and had to be changed). Betty
ReplyDeleteI had to change , even I would be embarrassed if caught out again
DeleteI love this post!

DeleteMr P sounds like such a lovely man.
ReplyDeleteHe is just that
DeleteWhat a lovely man. What a wonderful moment. Such a thoughtful down to earth offer. I’m so glad his rhubarb won. But oh my goodness the trousers. My tears of empathy changed to streaming tears of laughter. Jean in Winnipeg
ReplyDeleteI couldn’t post the story at the time , it andhe deserved his own story
DeleteWhat a lovely offer from what sounds like an equally lovely man. You are surrounded by good people in your village, all looking out for each other, just as it should be.
ReplyDeleteYou have probably met him when you entered the show that time
Deletethat was the best ending of a serious story. I love characters like Mr. Poznam.

DeleteWhat a lovely man. He is very special. You have friends and you are loved. Everything is going to be alright.
ReplyDelete🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻👌🏻
DeleteThe hospice has reduce d some beds at other hospices in order to protect the jobs at the one you work at.
ReplyDeleteThe laest news is that they've also received Lottery funding in order to prevent redundancies
When were you goi ng to tell readers that? That your job is safe. Or are youwaiting for the go fund me page or more cash to arrve in the post?
Can't you see the wider picture? Reducing beds at one site means that providing 24hr nursing care will reduce - there. The staff who covered them will not necessarily be the ones who lose their jobs. The total nursing staff over all sites will be considered - or can your tiny, mean little brain not think that broadly?
DeleteThe second anon is right
DeleteThe nursing positions are at risk at BOTH sites. Please read the official statement
https://www.facebook.com/HosbisDewiSant
Since that statement Lottery funding has been given
DeleteJesus johno
ReplyDeleteJesus !!!!!!
Lee
