Executive Decision

It's been a lovely day today (weather wise) and a rather disappointing one (real life wise)... as after a troll through the Met Office' weather forecast, I now have to face the fact that on Sunday we should be experiencing some heavy rain and an afternoon of rather nasty blustery  conditions.
The question remains ...should we continue with the Open day or should I reschedule it for another Sunday?
I have to remember that an awful lot of people will have invested a great deal of effort contributing to the day. Mrs Trellis (she with the big smile and the uncontrollable dog) has offered her vintage morris minor up for a  "name the car"competition; my neighbours, the Barkers are opening up their extensive gardens for public viewing and local landscaper Chris has offered his historic gardening machinery up for show.

My neighbours designed their own signs for the Open day
Add to the mix the forthcoming cake making marathon from around 50 villagers and the work of at least 10 volunteers on the day to make the day run smoothly and I now feel dreadfully responsible if everything goes "tits up" because of some atrocious weather.
I think it prudent that we re schedule....the thought of a few old welsh ladies being laid low by a few escapee gazebos brings a shudder to my risk assessment orientated mind...so after a re review of the met office website tomorrow, I will make my decision and will let everyone concerned know.
Hey ho

The allotment fades at dusk tonight
I will leave you with a famous Welsh saying By Gwyn Thomas

There are still parts of Wales where the only concession to gaiety is a striped shroud

I thank you!

  1. Ooh leaves you in a bit of a fix doesn't it !
I'd do like you, see if the weather prediction is still the same on tomorrow's forecast, and then I'd re-shedule for the next week.
We recently had a family picnic scheduled, it poured down all day, and everyone either stayed away, or left early.
Crossing my fingers, you'll have a BIG turnout.

Oh John...I'm sorry the weather is playing foul with your big day. I will keep all fingers and toes crossed that the weather man changes his mind and everything will be a go.

  5. Well I hate hearing that and I certainly understand the indecision and the [potential] massive disappointment. Are you asking for opinions? Because I think it would just wear on you too much and cause too much anxiety for the next 4-5 days "What will it do?" that you might feel better to just reschedule for a time you feel more secure.
Flip a coin, heads you keep Sunday and tails you reschedule. Then pay attention to which side you are hoping for when you flip it and if there is a desire to flip it again "just to be sure." That tells you your answer/true desire right there.
Since my rain dance isn't working over here (no Chris-no video, trust me, you don't want to see it), I'll send our non-rain mojo your way.

  7. If your weather people are anything like ours here, I would not make plans based on what they said "could happen" six days from now. Weather patterns change so rapidly and you could have a glorious day. Our forcasters have been known to be incorrect 50% of the time. Can't you wait till Thursday to postpone it or just list a rain date also in case the forecast is correct?

  12. Yes, I am having problems leaving a comment, but only because I am trying to stop myself leaving one about the 'gaity of a striped shroud', with all the crassness that it invites.

  13. Lots of people report having problems with comments.

How often are they right? Maybe ask some of the more weatherwise folk their opinion of your chosen day.

Or ask the others if they mind rescheduling. Or see if anyone has a good sized tent as Sharon suggested.
I wish you much luck and many good thoughts however it goes.

  19. I told mother about your post and she reminded me of something she saw years ago....
A fete in aid of the British Legion which had as number one attraction a display by the Red Arrows...and on the bottom of the poster...
    'if wet, in church hall.'

  21. Have no fear. My Meteo people promised us violent storms all day for today. However, the sky is clear and the sun shining!!

Ah Mrs Trellis... How I miss Humph.

  22. Oh that's a bummer. But see if you can sit down quietly and let your intuition speak to you, John. It's hard to do, but it will give you the right decision. Bon courage!

  23. It can't be that much different than in the States o're there. Weatherfolk are wrong more often than right. And most often the rain is only brief. Then you are left with all the festivities.

will review tomorrow's met office forecast and then make up my mind

  25. Rain forecast for Wales? Surely you must be pulling your readers' legs! It would be awful if you cancelled and then enjoyed a rain-free Sunday after all.

  26. The trouble is, you don't know if rain will be forecast for the next week, or the week after...

Yesterday we were supposed to have violent thunderstorms...nothing...not a drop or a breeze...
Have you checked the weather today yet? Any change? Here's hoping.

  28. John, what about entertaining the idea of a 'church hall'/community hall 'backup plan'....just in case?

  29. Hope the weather does improve although the weather men do talk about it going downhill at the weekend.
Love the quote are the shroud - I think it is true of a lot of parts of the country!!
    Good luck whatever your decision.

  30. Oh don't put your trust in the weather forecast. I genuinely don't think they can know this far in advance. But in any event, lling Ravens has offered some very clever advice! Fingers crossed anyway

I know you'll make the correct decision! No one would enjoy themselves in a storm...I'm thinking soggy cake blowing around!

I like the quote from Wales...I'm wanting a striped shroud now! ;)

  33. I can understand your wanting to cancel if the weather seems unwilling to co-operate, but i do think that it might be better to have an inside Plan B option, either a church hall or a large tent; that way, the baking and all can go on as planned. Mrs Trellis may need to rethink if she want her vintage motor outside in the rain, ditto landscaper Chris. The gardens should be lovely, rain or shine. I got married in a drought, although it poured buckets my entire wedding day, with the exception of two one-hour breaks. During those breaks we took photos outside and had the receiving line outside in the carriage circle (old country church). The churchyard had beautiful flowers and all looked wonderful against those grey, grey skies.

I do hope that the weather forecast improves.
