Ive been lucky enough to see Diana Damrau sing this aria at the Met in New York .To be honest the Opera is complicated and overlong , but this aria is sublime and is a lesson of sometimes the best bits are the briefest
I had brunch with my friend Polly this morning.
Not a long date but one we both felt the benefit from it.
Heyho
Is this the same aria that is sung in "The Fifth Element". I know, I'm classy:)
ReplyDeleteLol. Me too.
DeleteEven a brief date is worthwhile with the right people.
ReplyDeleteEthereal aria and what an amazing voice. It seems familiar to me, too. 5th Element?
ReplyDeleteSo glad you and Polly could meet for brunch. What a good start to the day for you both!
Hugs!
Not sharing the high adulation many have of Mozart (for me, just occasional pieces here and there), this Queen of the Night aria from Die Zauberflote surely has to be a stand-out among ALL his works. I've seen the opera several times despite the story-line being so dotty, but whenever it's time for this aria I just wish it would never end or, at least, to be reprised later - which, of course, it isn't.
ReplyDeleteA brief date that leaves you happy is a million times better than a long one that saddens or annoys! xx
ReplyDeleteIt's not the length of the meet, but the connection it makes.
ReplyDeleteThe Queen Of The Night is a glorious aria....and if anyone remembers the best ever episode of Morse (Masonic Mysteries)this is at the point of the opera rehearsal at which murder is committed, with Morse the chief suspect. Ian McDairmid as the creepiest villain, and a cast including the marvellous Iain Cuthbertson as detective turned vicar, McNutt, and the incomparable Diane Fletcher as the villain's partner in crime. Plus a dissolving computer programme used later in Skyfall.
Breakfast/brunch is a wonderful time of the day.
ReplyDeleteApologies to Raybeard, I’m a Mozart fan. I’ve sung in a church choir, and even for a volunteer of modest skill, he’s incredibly fun to sing. This soloist has such precision and technique, it’s beautiful.
