The day before the flower show
It’s eleven and the cottage is filled with the smell of mixed spice and boiled fruit.
My two boiled fruit cakes are ready, my novelty veg is completed and boiled eggs are cooling in the fridge
I remember her very last show, a bottle of oromorph on the kitchen table between us as we slagged off no shows
We are a funny breed

Sad bastards ?
ReplyDeleteBut a sad bastard I rather like and respect.

You should win a first with those cakes. They look fab. Have fun tomorrow and photos please if you get any free time and you are still on your pegs. Gigi
ReplyDeleteBoth look delicious and I'd love 'scratch and sniff' on this computer.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the fruits of The Flower Show Committee's (that's you!) hard work and take photos tomorrow, please!
Hugs!
They look yummy, I swear a warm fruity fragrance is coming through the Internet. I think I may have to do some baking. Jean in Winnipeg
ReplyDeleteYour fruit cakes look prize winning. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHells bells !! I may not bother entering, that’s got first prize all over it ..

Very satisfying John x
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the show. Yes, your cakes look wonderful, though I'm not a fan of fruitcake. Maybe I'll join your little circle around the bottle of oromorph! 😅
ReplyDeleteHope you win!
ReplyDeleteA big slice of that fruit loaf, please! After you've won first prize of course. I hope the show goes swimmingly, you get lots of entries for all categories, lots of attendees (with deep pockets), the sun shines and you're still smiling by the end of it all! xx
ReplyDeleteI love fruit cake and the smell of it cooking too. Yours looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteMy plan for today is to attend the flower show and see that lovely fruitcake in person. I hope to introduce myself to you too. I’ll be one of the attendees speaking with a Californian accent. I think it’s too late in life to lose it.
ReplyDeleteweavinfool
It was glorious to see you
DeleteOh John, I can smell that cake😋
ReplyDeleteOops too fast with the finger! Sure looks like first prize is going home to you cottage, good luck. Jan in Castle Gresley
ReplyDeletemmmmmm....caaaaaake....
ReplyDeleteYou can buy morphine over the counter there??? Yikes.
Debby
No it's prescription only. However as you know John is a nurse ...............
DeleteMy best friend cannot cook. I gave her a recipe for boiled fruit cake. She left out the water.
ReplyDeleteOh, that made me smile! We were baking a chocolate Swiss roll to make into a yule log in school domestic science. I forgot to put in the flour, and only noticed ten minutes into cooking when I saw my flour in it's Tupperware on the table. Got caught by a very snippy teacher lobbing my poor effort out of the window. Some you win.....
DeleteThe cakes look wonderful - well done. You are clearly an excellent baker and maker of delicious food. Wishing you a very successful show. We have a spring and a summer flower and produce show so I understand the behind the scenes work required, but these events glue the community together and are one of the highlights of our village calendar. Our new chair is even an instagrammer so we’ve gone viral - nothing more photogenic than food and flowers! Sarah in Sussex
ReplyDeleteI love a boiled fruit cake. Have a lovely show day x
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x

ReplyDeleteThose fruit cakes look amazing!!! You're the winner for sure. Hope the show is spectacular and the weather is great!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the flower show! Looks like a fun time. If it would survive the trip from New Jersey, I'd send a novelty fruit arrangement out of figs. We are drowning in them right now.
ReplyDeleteI would be very proud of myself if I could make cakes like yours.
ReplyDeleteI had to google oromorph - is it really morphine? Can you get it without a prescription? Inquiring minds and all that... - Jackie
ReplyDeleteThe cakes look like prize-winners to me!
ReplyDeleteYour cakes look delicious, John. Hope you have a great turnout at your festival.
ReplyDeleteThose boiled fruit cakes are for a FLOUR show.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to hearing about the show.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a winning entry there. Hope it all goes spiffingly.
ReplyDeleteOMG wish I was there to buy that beauty!
ReplyDeletePerfect! Hope you make it home in one piece, not the cakes, you. Have a grand time.
ReplyDeleteThose cakes look delicious! They remind me of the cakes my darling Gran used to bake. x
ReplyDeleteIf you ever want to sell your cottage John make sure you have a fruit cake cooking in the oven! The offers will go through the roof. I speak from experience 😉
