Sweet Charity

The problem with watching an amateur theatre production is that there are always a few actors that let the side down . It’s the nature of the beast, and one that you make allowances for.

Last night, Janet and I went to Theatre Clwyd to see the Chester/Wrexham TipTop Production of Sweet Charity and boy was it hard to see where amateur ended and professional started
It was a quality production all told .

Musicals live or die on their popular set pieces and the glorious Rhythm of Life song in this production was a doozie, with the large cast belting out their roles with real professional confidence. Not one performance reminded me I was at a amateur production ….a fact supported by my sister who asked in the interval
Why are tickets for tonight so cheap?

The selfie didn’t turn out

We had a lovely night out , I love nights like this one, that surprisingly impressed

  1. I played "Daddy" in my college production of Sweet Charity. Well, we changed it to "Mommy". lol Love that show as it's so 1960's.

    1. I didn’t realise it was written in 1965, it’s nearly as old as I am

  2. I recall Sammy Davis Jr playing Daddy in the 1969 movie version

  4. After my mother left the pro world of rep' (to have children), she occasionally returned to am-dram theatre just for fun. The troupe she worked with were all superb, although maybe their sets weren't!

It is so long since I went to a good amateur performance that I have forgotten that just occasionally they can be brilliant.

  8. That sounds like lot of fun, for the cast as well as the audience.

A great amdram performance is inspiring, usually because the performance has so much heart and commitment. Sweet Charity is a wonderful show, and screams the Sixties; and for it to stand up against memories of Sammy Davies Jr and Shirley McLaine, plus Bob Fosse's wacky and ground breaking choreography the version you saw clearly had so much going for it. What a wonderful night out! No need to walk out of this one! Kudos to everyone involved - and the audience for supporting them.

    1. They were clever, the men were not natural dancers so Bob fossee’s iconic arm movements suited them fine

  10. Ohhh love it when that happens.
I love Hey Big Spender. Broadway Backwards has done it and it's fab.

  11. It was kind of Janet to take you to Theatre Clwyd. Did she bring you some chocolate covered mini-Scotch eggs to munch at the interval? It's always nice when a theatrical performance exceeds expectations.

  17. I love that show! I grew up watching the Shirley MacLaine movie, and I saw it on Broadway in 2005 with Christina Applegate. Glad this production turned out to be a winner!

    1. It always amuses me that Rhythm of life comes out of no where, it’s nothing to do with the plot at all

Your sister is natural beauty and a very good sister. One of my best friends divorced her husband who was a member of a very talented amateur theatre group. We both say it is the only thing we miss about him. - Jackie
