Lanterns

But is it art????

This afternoon , like the crazy bitch I am, I left the TCA AGM  to learn to make willow lanterns over at the Still House.

I loved it . A few hours of being mindful under the quiet instruction of Ma Manley was just what I needed even though my lantern resembled a over ripened pumpkin which had been hit by a land rover .

Laurie, aka Pa Manley put on some gentle harp music on as we beavered away in their dark moody and very historic living room. The oldest house in the village .

My Fat fingers are not blessings when bending willow is concerned but I really enjoyed the afternoon , one which we are going to put out to the village one night at the hall…..

DESIGN AND MAKE YOUR OWN LANTERN

All good clean fun.

  1. Well, it's obvious you're both getting a laugh from it, so that's the important thing. :)

Of course it's art! However, I am more intrigued by that ghost in the doorway.

I like your lantern. It's different I grant you. But it is peronalised.

  6. What does it matter if others like or dislike it? Art is subjective. I can see loads of takers for the competition. Being creative is so therapeutic and it looks like you both had a good time. xx

    Have a lovely weekend!

What a wonderful idea you had presenting the village with this contest, John. Those who might be hesitant will see yours and think, "Hey-ho, I think I can do that!" And it's going to be beautiful. Love from Gail in California.

It's always good to learn a new skill, especially if your have willow growing near-by. You may soon be on the bee skips!

    Hugs!

Art is how you feel when making it, not how others see it! I love that you are willing to try different things.

      No it wasn't Oscar Wilde!
Sir Thomas Beecham said "you should try everything except folk dancing and incest"

  18. Not crazy, bitch... I mean not a crazy bitch. I love it. And yes, it does look like a pumpkin, but what fun! Do you light it using a candle which then sets the entire thing on fire? I would love to learn how to do that (the willow part, I mean, not the fire).

    1. Ma Manley soaks the willow strips for four days in water before they can be bent my first attempt was terrible but my second will be much better as I just got the hang of twisting of the wood.
      The candles are battery operated

  23. Lanterns and outside lighting is very popular. I think creating lanterns is a good idea. Pa Manley's lantern looks very carefully crafted with a specific pattern. You went for abstract, wild and free. I like your color choice. Were you inspired by G&T?

  24. Yep, way harder than it looks, I would hazard.
