Bathroom

I am clear in my mind what I want out of my new bathroom
Plain, clean and white
White with subway tiles and a single black border.
My “ Little man” promised me that he’s popping over next week with some glossy brochures for me to peruse but I have what I want very much in mind
My bathroom is tiny ( 6x5 ), so it’s Art Deco tiles , all in white with a single black line in trim
Not sure yet about the floor, so any ideas would be gratefully received

On nights again, but just two this week.

  1. We had our bathroom done last November. All white, with white tiles as above but they have a bit of a ripple texture to them. Floor tiles are a sort of pale creamy stone, not easy to describe. We also had them treated so they're not slippy. I like the examples you've posted, especially the first one with the honeycomb floor tiles. Word to the wise, if you have ceiling spotlights, do have a dimmer switch, otherwise, with all the white reflecting the light, you'll blind yourself! xx

  2. I was watching one of those Sarah Beeny shows recently and they showed a redone bathroom with massive tiles. The person who the room was for specifically wanted both the floor and wall tiles to be as large as possible because it equals less grout cleaning. I never thought of that before but it makes good sense and I would definitely go that way myself next time.

We've had a bathroom with the subway tiles before and I did love that too. Ours had a cobalt blue line of tiles about where the trim is there on your photos, which I also loved.

    1. We chose grey grout for both wall and floor tiles. Looks classy and won't discolour. xx

  4. I used a company Tile Mountain for my tiles , they are on line but sent lots of free samples and you could create a virual bathroom to see them, they were also amazing value ( and no I don't have shares in the company !)

  7. Nice John-I'd go for small black and white tiles or effect x

  8. We fitted one small bathroom with huge tiles on the walls and floor. The other we used long plank shaped tiles, the shower and floor in one shade the rest a lighter shade, all the rooms are grey. Both ceilings are shiny plastic planks that reflect the light beautifully. Job done.

    I love subway tiles.
Bath with shower over or just shower? With experience of putting a bathroom into a house dating from 1660, if shower, I'd go for a ceramic base. Plastic cracks in the long term, particularly if there is 'give' in the floor.

  11. I have those white tiles and after 10 years I still love them, we had tiles on the floor which was always dirty and cool, so last year we placed cushion floor on top, which is much warmer and easier to clean and keep clean.

  12. I love black and white. I’ll leave the floor to you. You always do well.

  14. Sorry John I have no bloody idea what happened there as it was a nice post about redoing my bathroom with cork floor tiles and supposedly a link to a nice pattern but I think Google got a bit excited lol

  15. May I suggest a thick and good quality vinyl for the floor? This should be quite a plain colour such as a speckled grey - as the wall tiles will be white and black which make grey when mixed together. Alternatively you could bring in some proper colour such as a plain turquoise or deep brick red.

  16. I googled black white tiny bathrooms and there are lots of classy photos of nice flooring options. A simple lino would be easy to clean. My flat has tiles that break if something falls on them and easily stain.

Such a practical thing was invented so long ago and my childhood memories are full of linoleum as a practical floor covering. If you want something more modern, what about sealed cork tiles?

Decoration is all very well and as you can see, it is not my area, but a strong focus on the bathroom fittings and their practicalities must come first.

Happy Hooker's comment is good about rippling tiles. They always look shiny.

And if your shower is above the bath, make sure you put in a sturdy handrail. In a decade or so, you will thank me for that advice.

  18. I love both the images you chose. I'm fond of small tiles. They look more vintage in my mind. I also like black and white for the same reason. You can always add colour with accessories.

  19. What on earth are Subway Tiles? Underground? Metro? Tube?

White? Choose something more forgiving. Not least with the ongoing snot problem in your abode. To put it another way: If you were suffering from dandruff or any other flaky skin condition you'd not wear black, would you?

As Andrew pointed out, fittings should be your first consideration, deco comes second. And forget about a bathtub, have a walk in shower. The luxury of it!

  20. As someone who is paid to be a specialist in flooring and tiling, you are dating your bathroom with white subway tiles. They will effect the resale value of your cottage, should you ever choose to sell. Most of the tile we sell for bathrooms are shades of grey or earth tones. Also, wait to put in the grab bar until it is essential. Nothing hurts resale value as much as a grab bar since most buyers are not elderly.

    1. Sorry, Dave, you don't have to be particularly old or elderly to, by way of example, do your back in temporarily. In which case a grab rail may be welcomed even by a twenty year old. And what if the elderly parents of the not so old purchaser of some bathroom comes to stay overnight?

Well, at least you aren't an Estate Agent. They too make up the most extraordinary narratives.

    2. My vestibule floor has small black and white tiles and have been there since 1923-they look characterful x

    3. This current grey/ earth toned fad would date the bathroom long before classic white will.

    4. Lizzy D I completely agree with you. I can date a room in a house by the colour of the walls and things in the decor. Like those live laugh love decals, 2006 lol I dislike all of this grey, it is somber and is sometimes hard to add any colour. Black and white will never go out of fashion.

  21. Gray grout! Why did i never think of that? I wonder if they sell mildew colored grout.

  22. I went with 2 inch by 2 inch tiles on the floor, and I am very happy with them, Non-slip and a very traditional look. The "designer" questioned this, as it is not stylish, but it is mine. Someone mentioned underfloor heating, if you can do that, you will love stepping onto a warm floor. (because of the construction and limitations in the building, I couldn't.)

    ReplyDelete
  23. My only suggestion is to make sure any tiles on the floor are not slippery when wet.

  24. Interesting to see your floor plan. I am not one to offer decorating tips, given that our bathroom is horrible and needs remodeling in the worst way. (But we rent.)

My grandmother's home, built in 1928, had white subway tiles, a narrow light Delft blue tile border (where the black one is in your first photo), and white hexagon tiles with black centers on the floor. It was timeless.
Hope you can sell what I surmise is a footed bathtub for a pretty penny.
Dave R's expert comment about no grab bar(s) notwithstanding, as a nurse, I recommend installing one or more. You could break you leg a decade before you'd need it because of age.
Enjoy the options, choices, and decisions!

    Hugs!

    1. Yes, I agree. After doing something to my shoulder and being unable to hoik myself up out of the bath, I got a bath with 2 handles on the sides. As my shower is over the bath, it's handy for getting in and out of the shower, too. xx

  26. Will you tile the entire room? Lots of grout means lots of cleaning and over time maintenance and/or deterioration. Large slabs, with fewer seams, properly installed, I find are more durable. Also consider a tower rack warmer. Equally important is venting for steam from the shower. You want a quiet fan.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think black and white tile on the floor would look good. I also like white subway tiles.

  28. Heated floor, heated towel rack? I am so relieved you plan to go with white! At one point you were fantasizing intestinal pink with pea green, I think. As for floor, non-slip tile, large size w as little grout lines possible. And good lighting. Will you have your bathtub? You like to soak?

The floor. Keep it simple. Even a border night be too much.

  30. As it is a small room I think you are wise to stick to black and white. You can always introduce warm colour with towels. And maybe a bathmat.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Do you want to keep to the black and white colour scheme or is that where you could introduce some colour/ I rather think as it is so small may be stick to the black and white have colourd towels?

  32. can you incorporate the space from the closet into the bathroom? Or go with a 3 by 3 shower?

  33. We have black and white linoleum (large squares of each) and I still love it, 24 years later.

Don't worry about resale value--fads come and go, and as someone else pointed out, today's fad for hotel-like grey will be dated before too long.

I also agree with the grab bar suggestion. Put it in now and it won't require another appointment.

  34. Small room, simpler the better. My advice is small tiles on the floor - maybe penny size. I'm assuming your shower is in there, and grout helps with grip, so less chance for slipping.

  35. Enjoy your planning, John! You always have had good ideas for decorating your lovely cottage so I am sure your bathroom will turn out fabulous! Good luck!

  36. Best to speak to a specialist tiler about the grouting. Our grouting hasn't ever gone mouldy after 2 years. We don't have a tiled shower however. We have very large imposing mismatched tiles on the floor 12 in all, and Griege hand made bevelled subway tiles on the wall halfway up. The rest is painted.

  37. I cannot look at white subway tile without flashbacks to the Boston subway crossover where the desperate urinated...so when I renovated I chose 6" square tiles, partly on point, partly straight set with 2 narrow colored bands around the interior of the shower. The grout has some sort of antibacterial in it to protect against mildew growth. The floor is tiled in a small woven pattern which is lovely but aggravating to sweep.
I am sure you'll love what you finally choose, have fun.

  39. My bathroom is 6x8. It's small. So is the tile. On the floor I used a grey backsplash tile, after checking with the manufacturer to be sure it was sturdy enough.

  40. Settle on something that you like because it is your bathroom. I prefer the muted colours of sands and North Africa and whilst I like white I do not like black and white tiles together, the black being harsh for me.

  41. We went for dark grout that is antibacterial. We used Tesco club card vouchers for our tiles at Topps Tiles. All my siblings gave me some of their redeemed vouchers (I think it was a special at the time of 4x the amount so £2.50 of vouchers came out at £10 at store when they changed them to the correct ones). They all gave me some for my birthday and christmas. It meant my tiles were free to me and cost them no more than they would have stuffed in a card in an Amazon voucher.

The bathroom cost so much to be put in I was very thankful for the tiles being a gift. We went for charcoal black slate effect on the floor and white square tiles. It is easy to clean and I can add anything to it colour wise to make it pop. Good luck it is so nice to have a bathroom that functions and is safe to use! It is also a bonus it is so much easier to clean as nothing is broken and I dont cut myself on broken floor tiles.

  42. Personally, and having been in your cottage I would go down the white theme that you have chosen but then for the floor have a more patterned style of tile that has black, white, grey and a little bit of colour in it, perhaps a mustard or a retro green ... you knew I'd mention green didn't you!!

This way you have something to be able to match to towels and accessories and be able to brighten up the room a bit with.

  43. Your bathroom is a wee bit bigger than mine! But then we only have a shower stall, no bath. It's all white tiles with white grout which I loathe - you are wise to go grey. We have a shelf above the door for loo rolls, flannels and a basket of sunscreen, razors, soap etc. A mirrored shallow cupboard above the basin and a small but highly functional stainless steel heated towel rail. When we bought this place there was just a mirror over the sink and a plain towel rail. No shelf, no storage. Did my head in. It's amazing what you can achieve in a small space with thought and care.
