Saw this news on FB and commented.I know you will be so devastated, but hope you are also feeling grateful that you didn't have the decision to make. I am still crying as it brings back all my sadness about when my first dog left us. I knew it was coming but I had to make the awful decision.Luckily the vet was able to come here and he went quietly in his bed with me holding him. Worst day.We love our dogs so much it is losing your best friend and family member all in one. She went the best way possible. Sending more hugs .RIP dearest Winnie. XX
Oh no, but what a great way to go. She will leave a huge gap in your life, and in Albert's. I'm glad you had just had a good dinner and a play and didn't die while you were out. Hugs to you.
I am very sorry to read that Winnie has died. Take care John. I don't know what else to say. When our sweet dogs pass away there is never a right thing to say about it.
I am so sad for you. There is nothing on earth as strong as the love between a dog and it’s owner. She is at peace, I hope you will be too, knowing she died in her sleep is the way we all choose to go. RIP dear Winnie. Much love to you and all your pets. xx
I can only repeat what so many have already said: What a way to go! Dotty has some big paw prints to fill and, hopefully, she can do that for you and the other fur kids!
While knowing it was coming, it still must have been a shock and you have my deepest sympathy. Writing the eulogy is hopefully therapeutic for you... and us who feel a sense of grief from afar.
Very sad. I did not expect the tears to come for a random stranger and his old dog across the world, but they are. Thinking about you and Albert and the rest of the pack, and so grateful that Winnie had such a wonderful time with you. She will be greatly missed. Rest easy, Winnie Girl. <3
She went precisely on her own terms, surrounded with dignity and love. Thank you for giving her that life, a life well-lived and a life that touched me across the Pond, for years.
And the others, including Albert, will know what has happened and well be peaceful in that knowledge. Go gently into that Good Night our own darling Winnie. Tess xx

I am so heartbroken for you John, Winnie was such a lovely girl and will be remembered fondly by us all, I'm glad her last day was such a pleasant one and nice to think of her that way, just falling asleep contend knowing that she was loved, the cottage won't feel the same for a while and Albert and the girls will wonder where she got to. I am so sorry. Cheers to Winnie for going peacefully on her own terms. She had so much spirit and personality. Hugs and heartfelt wishes to all as she will clearly be missed.
Dear sweet Winnie. For me, the loss of a pet is the most intense pain I've ever felt. Losing an animal is a massive intense heartbreak like no other. And those of us that know what I am talking about are not ashamed. I have sent loads of hugs across the pond to you John.
Oh John. I am so very sorry. She had a most excellent life with you, and it sounds like a good death too. My heart goes out to you and the rest of your furry family (Albert in particular).
I can only say what over 100 people have said. She was one of a kind and loved throughout your blog world. Bless her for leaving as gently and perfectly as she could. We should all be so lucky. Darling Winnie. Missed all over the world. Loved her, love you and loved you loving her.
My sympathy to all who loved sweet Winnie. I was glad to read she got to play with the rubber chicken one more time before turning toward the Rainbow Bridge. Big hugs to you who will miss her charming smiles, kisses, and sharing the treats at McD's.
I thought of you and Winnie just yesterday as I took my old boy Charlie along to do the recycling. We stopped at McD's on the way home and he got a cheeseburger. He is 10 1/2 yrs old and my dearest friend. I dread the thought of losing him- but when he goes- I hope and pray it will be just the way that wonderful Winnie went- with a full tummy, after playing with the younger dogs and in his own home while I am nearby. Winnie sure new how to live and she knew how to leave too. My heart is full for you John. I hope you can feel the love from all of us. Colleen
I am sorry and saddened to hear about Winnie. I have two terriers, one 14 and one 12, soon to be 13 on Christmas Day. I have been widowed for almost ten years and live alone. I dread the day that either passes as they bring so much happiness and good cheer. You gave Winnie the best of times and through you your readers were able to share in little pieces of her life. So thank you John. And thank you Winnie.
How typical of Her Majesty. Quietly with dignity and totally I her own terms. She was blessed, and we would all love to follow her example. She has left home to go home. You give a dog your heart to tear, as Killing so perfectly put it. A great girl to have shared your life wighs. Love to her and all her living family.
And she so looked like the Queen of Tonga. Sorry for your loss John, but she was one loved and lucky old girl, yes you will miss her but every dog has their day and she has had hers. Arohanui from the bottom of the world.

So very sorry, John, but what a lovely peaceful ending. No last vet trip, no sad goodbyes. I sympathise re losing a much-loved pet so close to Christmas. It happened to me 2 years ago. Give Albert an extra cuddle from me. Jxx
I can't believe this! I always thought she'd go after a lingering illness or perhaps some drama, but not peacefully as she did. RIP Winnie. How are you feeling John?
So sorry to hear this John. She was an absolute darling, I hope you're able to bear up in these uncertain times and get plenty of cuddles from the other animals in your menagerie. Hils XX
So glad that you got to spend quality time with Winnie following her last vet visit and that she got to leave this life in such a peaceful way. What a day it was for you. A life well lived, never to be forgotten, love goes on.
Sending you more hugs than you can handle, John. She was so loved and so loving, and quite a character. I don't think I would mind going that way -- after enjoying all my tea and some rubber chicken horseplay with a good friend.
I am so glad she died quietly at home in the kitchen which she loved and with the dogs and you, who she loved, rather than you having to make that awful decision xx
So sorry to hear your sad news John - Winnie had a loving caring home and a full life with you and you were so right to leave her and let her go over the rainbow bridge, when she was ready, with a full tummy, a bit of fun with a sibling and in the warmth and comfort of her own home - Bless her and you - sending hugs for you, Albert, Mary and Dorothy - take care xx
What a great life she had with you, John. And you were spared a one way trip to the vets with her. A happy last few hours for her at the end of the happy life you gave her. Hugs, Morag x
