Mi Bon Siach

If you have the chance watch the tv series Unorthodox
It’s the story of Esty, a nineteen year old ultra Orthodox Jew living in Brooklyn and her struggle with coping with her secular life.
This moment stands out as one of the most powerful I have ever seen on film as Esty, ( Shira Haas) auditions for a place in a German Conservatory which is her final ticket to a more mainstream and happy life.
The power and desperation  in this performance , which incidentally is a traditional Jewish wedding song ( Mi Bon Siach which means The Love Of A Bride) is amazing

I watched this final episode yesterday afternoon, as I lay in bed.
It was a piece of film making so powerful I had to get up and walk it’s effects away.
I’m not moaning here, life alone is what it is, but I so needed to talk about the scene and how it made me feel inside and I couldn’t !
So had to walk away my thoughts around the village , which was cold and wet , yet filled with cheerfulness and bright lights and after 20 minutes I felt less tense and more relaxed
Unorthodox is not an easy watch, but it is a powerfully emotive one with a magnificently performed lead role .

  1. I watched it earlier this year and was blown away. The raw feelings it brought out in me were a surprise, Not necessarily pleasant ones. Eye opening.

    1. In Llandudno we have a small maternity home and a holiday hotel for orthodox Jewish families and I love , in the summer just how exotic the town looks with the visitors in traditional garb

    1. I found the ending very uplifting, as I think you did. It was not about being sad, needing your walk, at least that is my understanding of your post.

    2. Exactly , I wanted to share the power of the piece I watched and how moved I was.
I was so moved I just HAD to walk

    3. Yes, that was what I thought, because I know how I was when I watched it, alone. Your post was not about you feeling sad about yourself. x

  6. On a more general note, it has seemed to me that when we're raw, just about everything sets us off. When we were battling infertility I swear every advertisement on TV and everywhere else used babies... from carpet makers to car makers used babies on their ads, and each one turned the knife. I found I just had to walk it off too.

    I'm feeling for you John.

  7. Performing is hard...but when your whole life really depends on it...She got her place?

  8. The story, somewhat based on a non-fiction book of the same name by Deborah Feldman, was very moving. I have listened to interviews in both English and German with Ms. Feldman and find her to be a tremendous person who overcame a lot to be where she is today.

  9. John try the series Shtisel, it stars the same actress and is another facinating glimpse into the world of ultra Orthodox Jews.

  11. This set off a vague memory I have of another drama about ultra orthodox Judaism I saw once, years ago? A very funny scene in it: a group of elderly hassidim set upon by skinheads. Skinheads get worked over big time - they hadn't realized that the hassidim had all been forced years ago to be members of the Russian army? (Was this true?)

  12. I watched this with my daughter a while back. Having lived in Israel for a while and having visited an Orthodox family I have strong feelings.

A walk is often needed to settle emotions x

  15. This sounds good, I'll look out for it. I'm lapping up series at the moment, I've just got two episodes in watching The Queen's Gambit, it's very good, I did doubt it with it being about chess but it was recommended so highly.

  23. We watched that some months ago and completely agree with you. Astoundingly good in every way. And, yes that singing. I have to admit however that when I saw the title I read "Son of a bitch."

  24. It's the words just after the title words "Ahavas Kalloh which mean Love of a Bride. The words are taken from a commentary on the Song of Songs.

  25. Really found it fascinating and uplifting . The women came out of it better than the men. The husband was especially wooden. Cringeworthy in places
