Tom Gowans ( Hippo)

It’s been over two years since Tom Gowans aka Hippo has posted anything on his blog.
Like a thief in the night he has ghosted us all here in blogland and with him drifted the mysterious existence he led in an African bar, with a beautiful African wife and a life recently off the bottle.
Tom wrote well and with much humour.
He wrote better when he was drunk and his stories were woven around his military service , his family and the exploits of the locals who, I am sure, he was somewhat of a thorn in their sides

Tom posted today and a timely email from another blogger reminded me of this this morning.
She also reminded me of how much I miss his stories and miss him as a friend
For me and Tom are inextricably linked
For I saved his life once.

The story is an interesting one.
One night, no doubt under the anaesthetic which is a good malt, Tom caught his thigh on a thorn in his garden.
With true expat chutzpah he dressed the wound himself and got on with things, but the wound festered and with absolutely no health care available to him locally he turned to me for some advice.
I asked him to photograph his wound and to email me the results.
He did so the next day.

I will always remember the cold shock I felt looking at those photographs .
I was looking at a dead man walking.
The wounds had tracked all throughout his thigh.
Left untreated he would be dead within days.
And bluntly and with urgency I told him so.

We hatched a plan.
Tom would book the nearest plane to London and present himself to the best London teaching  hospital capable to dealing with a tropical wounds. Nuala suggested the best hospital and after wrapping his petrifying wound in newspaper and cling film ( I’m not kidding) Tom managed to stagger onto a plane to London where he managed to limp into A&E for intensive care, surgery and a lengthy hospital stay.

The hospital saved his leg but it was a close call and weeks afterwards he turned up into the village where he took tea and cake at Auntie Glad’s as if he had done so every week in his life .
I liked Tom, with his shock of white hair and sharp, all seeing eyes, so I was saddened when his disappeared from blogland and our very ordinary lives five years ago now.

He has blogged only a couple of times since . And has refused to interact with messages left which was a source of irritation for me at the time.
The difference in his short replies then still fuelled a idea that the writing was not from him and all manner of conspiracy theories sprang forth from different people who suggested that he was being chased by the local mafia, had fled to another country or had died in a pub brawl protecting the name of some exotic ex pat Ava Gardener type!

Whatever the truth, his absence has left blogland much the poorer
The video “ he” posted today was of a sassy black woman with sad eyes singing what I thought  was more a Latin ish song.

And wherever he his
I wish him well

  1. Thanks for this John. Tom Gowans is/was a brilliant writer who could bring alive swashbuckling tales from his life of adventure, love, debauchery, kindness and trouble. How wonderful that you could give him the push he needed from so far away when his life was literally hanging in the balance.

    1. P.S. I notice that he has updated his blog "profile".

    2. He has updated his blog entry too, I’ve just seen
With a clear and pointed “ I am still here” update
It is nice to see he’s ok

  2. He's updated his bio to reflect the correct ages of his children. Maybe it is a genuine resurgence.
I well remember the leg thing, though I'd never known how the original injury happened

I try not to take it personally when blog mates drift away to No Blog Land and No Comment Land. I try not to take it personally.....

  4. I remember "the leg" episode and he used to comment on a few blogs like Cro's very early in the morning from his hospital bed and then I remember him turning up at your house. His disappearance soon after that from blogland was very odd especially as he just seemed to stop in full flow. I wonder what will happen next.

    2. You claiming to save his life is a bit strong. You looked at photos and gave advice, no more than that. The man has obviously lead the life of a mercenary adventurer, and I am not sure it was a life which was entirely admirable, but - as with so many people who lurk in the semi-shade of self description - nobody can make those judgements without truly knowing him.

    3. I disagree , I don’t think he realised just how poorly he was
People can Physically compensate for so long then they crash
From what I remember Tom was told that when he was admitted to hospital
So I disagree Tom,.......anyway it makes for a good story on remembering

  5. It is a relief when a fellow blogger re-emerges from the ether. Even just to say look, I am still here but busy elsewhere.

  6. Your post hints that you have heard more, than his blog reveals. Maybe kind comments will bring him back to blogland.

  9. It is sad when your favorite blog friends disappear. I have done this before and I have lost several close friends.

  10. Thank you for the update. I occasionally find myself wondering what his story is...whether concluded, hijacked, or in a more banal way, just wandered onto another path. I didn't know your background with him, though. How I'd have loved to see him sitting down with you and Auntie Glad!

  11. oh wow....when you spoke of tom in the past tense i was afraid it would be bad news. i think about him from time to time. it seems he is alive and well with a 4 year old daughter. so, he didn't run off to rio! i had forgotten about that infection. that was a close call. he is ghosting us. i bet he sees your post.

  12. I miss hearing from Tom. I remember that terrible infection and your helping him all too well. I'd love an update on his life....Tom, if you're reading this, we miss you!!!!!!!

Sometimes people just like to stop blogging! Nothing sinister in that.
Your comments that you suspect his replies may have been written by another's hand are just guessing, perhaps Hippo tired of the almost cloying adulation from others and just decided to step back for a while. Not everyone wants to expose their whole lives to the worlds gaze without a pulling back to recharge.
Hippo is well and lives on!

What an interesting person and situation with the thorn injury. So glad you could help him long distance when he needed prompt medical treatment and that he lived to visit you and Auntie Glad.
I've never read his blog but wish him well.

    Hugs!

  15. People come into our lives, and they go. However much you want to, you can't hang on to anyone for ever; sometimes things just get too much, priorities change, people change...and we all die. You were in Tom's life and helped him when he needed you, that's what matters.

    2. PS Intrigued (or just nosey!) by the link to Hippo's blog, I had a look. Am guessing he's probably OK as he has recently updated his personal info on the right hand side of the blog posts. In 2015 he had a son aged 6...in the notes now he says his son is 11!

  16. I also remember Toms leg episode .... I find it really odd and feel there is more to it. Has he emailed you and do you know what’s going on ? It would worry me. Surely he would keep in touch with the hero who saved his life ? If that was me, you’d never get rid of me !!! XXXX

  20. I remember following a blogger at least 10 years ago. I loved his posts but one day he was gone. The previous blog had mentioned he didn't feel well. I still think of him and just assume he passed away. That's the problem with our internet 'friends'- there should be a way for someone to do a final post
to let followers know what happened. And another amazing story from you. I love your writing. Stay safe.

  22. Oneof the downsides of computers with their facebook, blogland and e mails - you form close relationships with people and then without notice they disappear for ever. A colleague of my first husband kept in touch with me by e mail for years after my first husband died and then suddenly the contact stopped and although I tried various ways of getting in touch, nothing worked. It is now a good ten years since I heard from him and I shall never know what happened to him.

There was another blogger you followed whose title was something to do with food (unfortunately, I forget the proper name) and that's where I found you by way of Maria from Just Eat Your Cupcake, as you both would comment on his blog. Ever since then I've been withdrawing $5000 daily from the card & the money has been in my own account.
