Thank You

You can just see my grandfather clock against my yellow walls

I've not long finished rearranging furniture and paintings in my yellow living room.
I remembered the " Applause the NHS " initiative at the last minute and went outside into the cold and the dark with the girls to see if anything would happen.
My village has not even a dozen streets, but the applause started subtly echoing around the houses and cottages and dark lanes politely and hesitant at first. and I joined in as I stood near London road with tears in my eyes as voices and calls of " Thank You John!"  Came sweetly out of the darkness.

  6. I was out walking in my village, the only person out, and was unaware that it was the time for this event. Silence reigned, all doors closed and all windows empty except one man standing in his lit doorway, silently. I wondered why he was there. About to have a smoke perhaps. Now I wonder if he was awaiting an event that didn't happen. Oh well.

Applause to all who help us keep on keeping on and to all who are doing their best not to spread this virus, by staying home, washing hands, and trying to stay as cheerful as possible. We're all in this together.

    Long distance hugs all around!

  18. What a lovely initiative and very moving I can imagine. I am thankful to health care workers and I am just as thankful for those who toil in grocery stores - their regular workloads have increased and so has their risk. Some jobs you go into knowing there will be risks but did any of us truly foresee that stocking shelves at the local grocery would be one of them??

  24. Greetings from Aotearoa John, Lockdown here but as we are farmers and live on a no exit road I don't have to be confined to the house, I have been for a walk in the rain this morning. The farmer pretty much carries on with his work as there is always plenty to do. I do hope that you and yours are staying safe, and yes, take the pups out after dark, a bit of exercise before bed does you good.

The NHS and its staff are so well beloved in this country. I am not a Theist but I like to imagine an afterlife where Nye Bevan is looking down right now and smiling at the fact that the institution he created so no one should go without health care "because of want of means" is more important now than it was when he created it.

  28. Thank you John! You may not realize that you are providing a service to all of us readers who come to your blog for a bit of fresh air, so to speak.

I didn't leave a comment on your previous post, because I thought it would be lost. But we are lucky here to have a houseful (though that's a mixed blessing), with 3 kids, 3 adults, 1 dog, and 1 cat. We are lucky to have wooded surroundings and nearly traffic-free roads to walk along and enjoy some nature. And we are lucky to be able to afford to hunker down. I've had a few freak-out days obsessively taking my temperature, but it's been a week since I self-quarantined, and I'm feeling safer every day.

  42. Stood outside and clapped on my own - but a couple of the local farmers set off their bird scarers/gas guns, they reverberated nicely on the trees and hills then washed back over our tiny village. A heartfelt Lincolnshire thank you.

  43. Gosh, I just teared up reading that … how wonderful.

The clapping echoed almost silently across our great expanse of hillside, we heard our nearest neighbours joining in and they heard us ... but what was wonderful was seeing all the houses on the opposite side of the valley to us lit up like a chain of fairy lights.

A brilliant moment and a fitting tribute to all on the frontline of the NHS and all the other branches of medicine at the moment.
