Nearly half of the choir turned up on Zoom at 6.30pm
and as the video shows the whole affair was a bit like hearding cats.

As it turned out it was the exact tonic that I think we all needed.
In an hour and a half we sang just three songs
But we laughed and laughed and giggled the experience away as unfamiliar hands cocked up video streams and Gill from Dyserth chomped her way a rather large chocolate wagon wheel.
Bemused husbands sat next to their spouses, and dogs and cats jumped up in front of the camera, and cups of tea appeared next to piles of choirsheets in Welsh country kitchens that have seen limited humour and laughter over this past long week.
Our final song was You Raise Me Up , and as we sang , we all swayed dramatically from side to side, free of the confines of the real choir room in the village hall and it felt, powerful and emotional and good.
I hope that through this fucking corona virus disaster, we all will reconnect with what's so important in life

We were quite orderly in our Zoom class. It sounds like it went quite well in the end, must have felt a bit weird singing in the kitchen though.

DeleteFantastic! The "middles" as opposed to the "olds" (us) and the "littles" (their kids) set up zoom meetings for the littles that have named themselves the Shenanigans Club! It's been hilarious for all of us to see them carrying phones or iPads around while they share time together!

ReplyDeleteI think it's great Zoom could bring all your voices together. It's a tool that my pal's kids' school is using to keep the 'classroom' going. I had the good fortune of being able to 'conference call' old uni chums using Zoom as well. Great tool for these isolating times.

ReplyDeleteIts times like this I'm so sad my mum has never got the hang of modern technology. At 86 she struggles to use a mobile phone never mind anything else. My husband set up an old mobile for her to be able to watch videos we had of my dad singing before he died but no matter how often we show her how to access them she forgets as soon as we've gone. We've tried writing it down for her too but she struggles to use the screen. It would be so useful for her just now when she feels very alone and we can only visit sporadically to check on her. Isn't technology wonderful when used properly. xx

Wonderful. I sing with two choirs but neither has organised anything like this. I am missing the singing in company. Loved it when someone asks 'has soandso 'arrived' yet' shows how much you felt that you were actually meeting together.
