Fanny-arsing

I'm watching the National Holocaust Memorial and cried buckets when the survivors of several world holocausts lit candles for the dead.
I've been pissed off on this day of reflection,
A day not to be selfishly pissed off I guess
I shouted at the irritating little man who uses his bad tempered husky type dogs pull him up the Dyserth Walkway on a skateboard.
As usual he made a big drama  play of telling them to be be good boys as they lunged to snarl at Mary and the crouching Dorothy and this morning I told him in no uncertain terms to
" Stop FANNY- ARSING ABOUT and move on!!"
( For those that don't know, someone who is "fanny ars[e]ing about" is someone who is making a silly meal out of something)
The man started to argue but stopped when I waved him off with Benedict  Cumberbatch waft " Be off with you!!"
What was I thinking?
I also had a bit of a falling out with my dog insurers on the phone and told two chattering women off in the cinema for talking......TWICE!!!
Like I said I've been out of sorts today.
I know why....but that's not for here

The film 1917 was an inspired choice of movie today.
A simple story of how two young soldiers infiltrate enemy lines in order to stop a foolhardy and suicidal British attack on the German forces was made into a first rate cinematic experience by its technical genius .
You will be simply blown away with the cinematography which gives the feel that the entire film was shot in just one long continuous take.
It's a revelation to watch Roger Deakins work on screen as at every step the soldiers make the camera is there swooping in and around the action with the agility of a hummingbird.
The visuals literally take your breath away.
From the visceral horror of no man's land, the audience " lives" the major set pieces with the actors. And so we are all trapped in an underground bunker, running scared in a burning and devastated Belgium town and are inserted into a crowd of soldiers who are listening to a melancholic prayer/song before they are sent over the top.

It's truly magnificent to watch.....and the wonderful cinematography is supported admirably by the film's editing by Lee Smith and its truly epic score by Thomas Newman
Go and see it on the big screen , you will be blown away
And don't fanny-arse around either!!!!!!

  2. I am definitely going to see that movie this weekend.
I think you did a good thing telling off that annoying person with the nasty dogs. I am sure I would have had harsher words for him.

  3. I've encountered the Dyserth walkway dipshit with his husky dogs last time I visited my friend who lives in Trelawnyd. We were walking our dogs (as you do) along the walkway when said creatures decided to stop and bare their teeth - we very quickly moved on. I didn't give my friend's dog or my Border Terrier much chance. The guy needs to understand that these dogs are intimidating and a potential danger to other dogs- they're nasty looking brutes. You did the right thing.

Looking forward to going to see 1917 - but the Matron got home from work too late. Ho hum...

Bad mood or good mood, it's right to tell a guy off when his dogs intimate other people's dogs, you're helping others by confronting him. -Mary

Well said to the irresponsible owner of the badly behaved and mean looking dogs!

Check your email and that might improve your mood a tad. Hope so.

  10. John in know its a war movie but is it very gorey and graphic? My Veteran husband cannot tolerate that any longer but wouldn't mind a war movie if its not too realistic.. Thanks! deb

  11. After seeing Saving Private Ryan Years ago, I swore off of war movies but was talked into this one. It is a terrific film.

  12. I enjoyed 1917 as well. An new story shown to us in a realistic and original way. As you say the cinematography was well done. It made you feel like you were along for the journey.

I am sure you are not alone, the idiots have annoyed me this week too. I had to ask a colleage to stop talking yesterday, as he was going on and on about the eating of live animals in some countries. I can't abide cruelty to animals and he failed to see that his commentary was unwanted.

Sit back and have a gin tonight (as long as you're not working).

  13. Now that you've explained "fanny arsing about" maybe you should also explain "making a silly meal out of something", as I've never heard that expression either. Otherwise, I get that you were annoyed and just wanted that guy away from you.

  14. My sons and I saw 1917 recently, and I would describe it exactly as you did, John. It's a truly powerful movie worth seeing on the big screen, rather than waiting for it to come out on DVD. Be sure to bring tissues and buy popcorn.

  16. Yes John, a truly great movie and Roger Deakins deserves the Oscar for his cinematography. He hails from Torquay, Devon (my home town) and makes us proud with all the awards he's won over the years.

  18. fanny-arsing about must mean the same as what we say in Australia. That is fiddle- farting around. Hope your day gets happier.

  19. Talking during a film at the cinema is a big no no.
Why do people have Huskies unless they are being trained to sled race ? in which case should be done in designated areas.

  20. Here we say stop fart arsing about or stop fannying about but not the two mixed.

On the subject of the dogs could you report them to someone surely if they are aggressive they should be muzzled in public .

  22. Re '1917' - I temporarily raised my recently imposed block against seeing yet another war film (ANY war!) in order to view this, mainly because of what I'd heard about the filming technique used - and so glad I did go. I can't imagine anyone who's in the least curious about it giving it a try and being disappointed. Extraordinary.

  24. I read about the making of this and the sheer joy the director got when the long sequences went well without interruption. He was a bit more miffed about the 6 minute sequence he thought he had in the can … when the actor tripped up at the end of it and it all had to be reshot!!

  25. I have days like that too, when I snap or snarl at someone. I guess we all do. And then I think, "Geez, if I keep that up, one of these days I'm going to get stabbed!"

  26. I used to erupt into uncontrolled foul-mouthed abuse, on occasion, but recently I have forced myself to try slow calm verbosity, after a long theatrically loud sigh, such as "Please desist and depart good chap for you are in danger of disturbing my equanimity," and it seems to have more effect. :)

I think telling off rude people is good for one's health. Otherwise, I stew about it for DAYS. Everyone is treated kindly with a smile, but if they are rude to me-watch out! I'm coming in hard, and I am quick and clever with my response. Why are we all so polite to jerks who think they are the only ones around? If enough people point out his dogs are scary or they are ruining the movie for others, maybe these selfish people will catch on. Snark on my friend!
