Pong

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about aftershave
He regularly wears about 6 brands
Presumingly it depends on his mood just which one he picks I thought and
that seems all rather hard work to me,
But I guess my apathy really would surprise no one!
Given my odd sense of style.

I wear just one
Clinique Happy is my signature smell.....
It's a bright wiff.....well suited to my personality
Happy more than sexy me thinks
I was sat in handover at the hospice the other morning and one of the nurses exclaimed
Who smells bloody gorgeous ?
I put my hand up......women seem to like my aftershave
I've not really  tried it on men yet!

I like a man to smell of soap and water
That's a result of working alongside too many doctors and male nurses!
Oh and one sexy, upclose and personal memory of a clean smelling policeman who had just come on duty in 1988!

What's your smell?

  8. I love perfume, but am a bit short of money these days.I don't wear it every day, just when I fancy. As a teenager I worked for a couple of years on a cosmetic counter.Guerlain was very popular and I still use Mitsouko,Dior Dolce vita around christmas time and even some mens products as I don't like flowery fragrances for me.I do have rather a lot but all bought a while ago, luckily they seem to have kept well.Otherwise I expect most days I smell of wet dog x

    1. I adore Mitsouko, have used it for years. While on holiday in Singapore earlier this year I was lunching in one of the top hotels, the smell of orchids in reception was gorgeous. At duty free on the way home I was lucky to find a Tom Ford perfume that had a similar scent, a reminder of a lovely holiday.

  10. I have 2: Guerlin's Vetiver for day (herbal and distinctive) and Acca Kappa (Italian) Muschio Bianco (White Moss) for evening and formal occasions, on the sweeter side and very distinctive (few people even know of it; I ran into it at an Italian gift shop in San Diego).

  12. Mine is Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, it's a bit like a fresh ocean breeze scent with the barest touch of flowers in the woods in the mix. The one I wore for years before they stopped making it was very similar. I'm drawn to fresh and clean smelling environments, products and people. I don't use much so unless one is quite close to me it isn't noticeable, yet I enjoy it myself, so I wear it every day.

As a young twenty something I had several bottles with different scents suited for different occasions. As I matured and got to know who I really am I lost the need to change anything about myself to suit a person or activity. Perhaps your having one favorite aftershave is a good indication that you know and like yourself, John. You have good reason to. - Mary

I have a bit of a thing for perfumes and like to sometimes just read reviews.I am trying to find one that smells like damp woodlands at the moment. Can't afford it just get though.I did buy Miller and Harris La fumee a couple of years ago,but it's not it.The nearest can find is the essential oil Benzoin but it's dangerous to apply neat x

  16. You do smell deliciously of clementines John. The temptation to chew on your neck is only countered by the fact that you don't have one.

My own fragrance (when I can afford it) is Terre d'Hermès. It has wood notes. Other favourites are Givenchy Gentleman and Yves Saint Lauren Kouros. Any of the above please if you are feeling generous.

  24. Only man's cologne I've ever really liked is Caswell-Massey No. 6. It's supposed to have been George Washington's favorite. Described as "a piquant blend of bergamot, orange blossoms, rosemary, narcissus and 27 additional aromatics." It's different from most modern scents, but just lovely.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It depends on the time of year - I like fresh, lemony scents in the summer and warmer, woody ones in the autumn and winter. Not a fan of florals.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't wear perfume as I'm allergic to it, one thing scented that I can get away with wearing is Mande Lular body creams and butters from the Boots Sanctuary range ... so that has been my signature pong for around 20 years.

Alan doesn't wear aftershave because of my allergy ... and his lovely beard.

  31. One is quite enough, especially if it's gorgeous. Why does aftershave often smell lovely, while perfumes for women are typically overpowering and headache inducing? Maybe I should buy some aftershave...!

  32. I like Gio by Giorgio Armani.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Chanel No. 5, hands down. First got it as a gift at age 14, from a boyfriend. I am now 68. Still my favorite

  34. Apparently you really do betray your age and disconnect with what now passes as the real world by calling it after-shave, as you did. My daughter (aged 32) fell about laughing when I called it that just a few days ago. Those men who reek most of those scents, colognes, whatevers, don't seem to shave very much, certainly not very close to the skin, Although I never use it whatever it is called, by the way.

  36. I've worn Norell for a very long time. Floral and spicy notes. Someone once told me it was an "old lady" perfume. Well ok then, that fits. But my all time flash back scent is to be out and about and catch a whiff of Old Spice. *Swoon*

  37. A signature scent is so much better than just miixing it up and wearing many! More thoughtful.

I've worn Angel by Thierry Mugler for years, before that I wore Opium. I have a male friend who wears Yves St-Laurent Homme, oh my it is delicious, if you ever want a change. Warm and enticing.

  38. I'm highly allergic to chemicals and scents. I really wish people wouldn't wear it in public places. When I was going through chemo it made me sick to my stomach. In restaurants it totally ruins the taste of the food being eaten. I'm all for people doing what makes them happy but when it infringes on someone else's comfort/ability to enjoy themselves - not so much. We all have to share the space.

  39. I think I last used after shave or some scent in around '65....it's soap, water, and whatever kind of shampoo I get that's on sale. In my peer group, and even among my kids peers, scents don't seem to be used much.

  45. Can't wear scents due to asthma and high sensitivity to strong smells. I do like the smell of "clean"!

Our hospitals are all scent-free and most nursing homes are too.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I've been wearing YSL Opium for men EDT which doesn't last long but nice for going to sleep with. Being older some of the mens scents suit my skin and of course, take into account any medication I'm on. Tresor by Lancome smells like peaches, Lauder's Cinnabar is delicious but for top of the range and price, Chanel's Coco Black. And that was my inheritance as I rarely wore perfume at the nursing home. People never think that older residents can't take a strong smell close to them but my mother always collected empty bottles just for the memories.

  47. The smell I most like on a man is soap. Irish Spring, whatever smells clean and fresh. That gets me going. For me, I found Grey Flannel, an eighties fragrance by Geoffrey Beene in some airport fragrance counter and I LOVE IT.

I use Gucci "Envy Me" in the spring and summer but usually change to Gucci #3 in fall and winter. My all time favorite was Gucci #1 but they quit making it (as far as I know) and I have only a little of it left over from some I gave my mother.

Grey Flannel smelled wonderful on a doctor I used to work with but not so great on DH. Aramis is his favorite and I like it, too.

    Always interesting topics here!

    Hugs!

  50. I used to love Clinique Happy for women. Then my ex-husband's mistress sent me a bottle of it as a congratulations gift when my daughter was born. It kind of ruined the experience for me. Then I started using Bath and Bodyworks Honeysuckle. I used it until they discontinued it. Now I use sweet grass essential oil.

  51. As a teenage boy in the 70s I was mightily impressed by the Hai Karate adverts. Sadly a Valerie Leon substitute never did try to force herself on me. Then again I never wore any. I did try my dad's Old Spice though (erm, soap and water and a Thai deodorant stone).

  52. My daughter always wore mens cologne as it wasen't as heavy and the scent lingered longer so strangely enough I have a bottle of men's Happy as well as the men's Happy cream balm which lasts for ever I don't wear it everyday. My husband has worn Brute for as long as we have been married which I also like.
