Nice

Autumn is here and Bake off is back with another twelve eclectic characters who have, I suspect been auditioned within an inch of their lives in order to reach the short list.
The line up could be the cast of a 1970's disaster movie.
The sassy Gran, the diffident scientist, the bubbly mom......cardboard characters at first that are suddenly fleshed out with lifestyle clips that could have been pulled directly from Facebook, Bake Off  offers us a glimpse into peoples' lives that seem normal and cozy and nice.
The gay dad who never has enough time to bake because of demand of his kids, the quirky mental health worker who looks every inch a mental Heath worker and a dippy Anglo Asian, Amy Winehouse with a smart mouth, there is much to choose from where favourites are concerned, and the audience, Who understands that they are being manipulated, just goes along for the nice ride

Bironey cried a lot and laughed at herself, then cried again. Mannon cried too and was immediately comforted by the geek looking PhD Rahul who couldn't look more uncomfortable on a 1:1 than any 14 year old schoolboy sporting his first erection.

Bake off is off to a great start...
Watching nice people, doing nice things being nice........is addictive

  2. I don't enjoy it as much as I did with the old cast of judges on BBC John. And when I realised that it was on at the same time as Yorkshire Vet then I switched over (I don't have a facility to record ITV (I don't think)).

    1. It's now on C4, Weave, and that has a +1 hr facility, so you should be able to watch both. I'd give you the channel no., but it is different depending on whether your TV is HD or not. It will be in the Radio Times (look at the very bottom of the listing column for that day).

    2. Yay for Sewing Bee!

    3. Apparently so - not sure when though. It'll make a nice change from soaps, crime dramas and cookery shows (not including GBBO in that obvs).

  6. Sounds like a fun group. I saw some of the original series on PBS and really enjoyed it. Glad you are feeling better.

  9. Here in the US I have watched other seasons on Netflix and love it. And I have never baked anything and have no desire to do so. Glad there is another season coming.
    Cheers

  13. I am intrigued about the gay dad. Can you expand a bit? (I don't watch the programme so cannot answer this for myself).

  14. I've been watching past seasons of Bake Off on PBS and CBC all summer. We have our own Canadian version too, which starts later this month.

  15. I'll pass thanks and just wait for you to update me on any important things I ought to know (?)
    Meanwhile Strictly is on Saturday

  17. LOVE this show! Both the Canadian and the UK versions!

  18. I really love this show just because the people are nice and there is no ridiculous manufactured drama as you find on many "reality" shows. Extra Slice is also a hoot. There is an Aussie version of Bake Off as well, which is just as enjoyable - I get to see both thanks to those slightly dodgy streaming sites as neither show is ever shown here in Sweden.

This year I really like Briony, Jon with his Hawaian shirts and that Bollywood guy (is it Antony?). I did think that expecting them to temper chocolate to create those cake collars on one of the summer's hottest days was a bit ridiculous, but mostly it's simply a lot of fun.

  19. We have been watching Season 5 here at the Moon house. I think you have perfectly nailed the whole concept and why we watch. Plus the food, you know. Sometimes I do get a bit frustrated with the assignments. They are so fussy and silly. Who in the world is going to bake a bread sculpture? But it's all good in the end except for those who are sent home. I am in love with Paul Hollywood's eyes. And I am taking a shine to this new (for us) goth Comedian guy. I love his nose.

  20. There are definitely some interesting characters on this season. The quirky woman with the green eyeshadow is something else. I already feel like I have a pretty good idea who's likely to win, though!

  21. I love Bake Off! Last season of the British version is just wrapping up here in Canada, then our Canadian one will start. When they are both in hiatus, I watch old Episodes on you tube. A friend of mine made it right to the final cut, but got axed when they got to the final gang for broadcast! I miss Mary Berry.

We love Bake Off, too, but until three nights ago had seen only the first 4 series with Mary, Mel, and Sue. Then we saw Netflix had series 5 so off we went. What a disappointment! The bakers weren't introduced at all and didn't seem to have a clue how to bake, the filming was chaotic, and we didn't care for the replacements for the aforesaid ladies. Sigh! Wonder if we can get the Canadian and/or Aussie versions?

    This has been interesting!

  23. Love bake off, then we watch a recording of the yorkshire vet, another of my favourite programmes.

  24. I already want Briony or Anthony to win! I've not seen episode 2 yet, recorded but no time to watch yet, so ssshhhh!
I've been a huge Noel Fielding fan since the days of The Mighty Boosh, not my type at all, but somehow he pushes all the right buttons with me. Loving his new hairdo as well!

  25. I like this programme very much! Too bad it's been on ITV since a few years, we cannot receive this in the Netherlands, unlike the BBC. We have to wait for one of our broadcasting-companies to buy the latest series.
By the way, we have a Dutch version as well.

  26. The GBBO is my happy place. Civilized, nice, funny... it's what we need today.

  27. I have been watching the past seasons on Netflix and I enjoy it so much. My only problem with the show is the hair ! One season had Kate with curly hair who looked like she teased it up and never brushed it. It was always in her face. The the younger ones with the tendrils hanging down in sweaty faces. Just brush and pin it up. Having rings on your hand is another no for me. I am watching the season with Nadiya on it. So enjoying it but I get so hungry.
I look forward to your reviews.

  29. We had Yan from last year's intake come to talk to our WI group the other month. She's local, and some members bump into her in Tesco.

She let us into some of the secrets - not all, or she'd have had to kill us, and gave the thumbs-up to our collective baking skills.

  31. This is so fabulous. We had a baking day with the all the people at our office. It was such a fun day, without talking about work for anything. Hope you all have a great time and thanks for sharing the wonderful day with us.

  34. I love this show but I've only seen the first 5 seasons with Mary, Mel, and Sue. I'm not sure if we get the new ones here in the US yet.

  35. Love Noel's 'Elvis' look. Meanwhile, 'Strictly' starts on Saturday. Did you watch 'Wanderlust' last night? I was a bit disappointed.

  36. Nice is such a small word but when you bump into nice people during the day it just makes you feel good and it's so easy to be nice. I noticed your comment Jim from "ocean breezes" I miss your blog especially Eclectic Tastes all the best from Vancouver Island.
Sorry John I'm going of track here I haven't seen any of the bake off series I avoid the kitchen as much as possible my husband does all the cooking.
