William RTA

Early yesterday evening William was hit by a car.
He'd slipped his lead on his early evening walk, and ambled into the road as I was grappling with the other dogs' by the back gate
He walked three steps into the road, his blind eye to the upcoming traffic which never really comes...
But this time  it did come...
The small hatchback car stopped only a half inch too short. It was a good natured young man from down Cwm Road
And William was knocked over with a yelp.
The boy went white
My heart broke but my nursing head took over.
The boy in the car held the dog's leads as I rushed the old boy into the kitchen to check him over on the kitchen top.
He shook like a leaf, had some bleeding from his nose and mouth and clung to me fearfully but all of his limbs and abdomen looked alright and after we all eventually returned to my living room chair  he lay on my knee like for an absolute age, like a floppy shocked baby.....As I cried,a few grateful tears
I'm sick of this bad luck,
But at this time of typing , old William is fine, and sleeping a grateful sleep.

What I wouldn't give for another chance and more time with loved ones who passed on. I will keep you and William and your clan in my thoughts. Sending y'all best wishes and saying a prayer for y'all. Take care.

  31. I am so glad he is ok. At that moment when you saw the car coming and William in the road, your heart must have just dropped with fear.

My Fuzzy Pom is almost 14 and he still can't be completely trusted not to run right past me and take a joy "run" down the sidewalk and across the street. He is deaf now, so I worry about this happening, because he wouldn't even hear a car coming, plus it would be hard to get him back in the house quickly, because he won't be able to hear my offers of cottage cheese, he'll always return for cheese. He is very dis-obedient when he goes for a joy run and won't mind me and come to me without offers of cottage cheese. I'm a bad dog trainer, even though he is usually a very good little dog.

  62. I read this post with my heart in my mouth. Thank God for your "nursing head", it stopped you panicking, as I'll bet you felt like doing. And relief too that poor William seems to have sustained only minor injuries. Please post tomorrow morning (evening your time!) so we can all stop worrying. How are the other animals taking it?
Big hugs to you, and gentle strokes for William. You didn't tell us how the Fat Club went, but I don't care, and anyway, with what you've been going through a weight loss would astound me! I'd've been hitting the chocolates big time!!

  68. Sorry to hear it. I don't know how many times I asked one of my cats (the one you could have real conversations with - no bull) whether she had a death wish. Eventually it was fulfilled. Sunny Sunday afternoon I receive a phone call from a friend. Odd coincidence. She found Fleury lying on the curb, no visible damage. Took her to the vet where Fleury died of heart failure. The vet checked the microchip (can't recommend those enough) for owner's name when my friend realized it was my cat. The vet left her to it to give me the sad news. Couldn't believe it. Eight years old. Still, cats only have nine lives so better be prudent instead of squandering all capital. Ten years on I still miss her and our "conversations".

The twist in this strange little saga full of coincidences that not long afterwards (again a sunny Sunday, the sun momentarily blinding me) I tripped up into a pothole at the exact spot where Fleury was found on the kerb, collapsing like a puppet on a string; breaking, yes, John, not one but both arms and wrists. I won't even mention my leg. Call me Mummy(fied). Not that it's much comfort to you but "luck" doesn't really come into it. Stuff just happens. Without rhyme, though often with reason.

    Best to William,
    U

    1. U your post was very poignant about Fleury. But for you to break both arms and wrists and a damaged leg as well... that would have been terrible. Having just broken my right shoulder I found that hard enough. You must've had a hell of a time recovering from that.

      Delete
    2. Thanks for the sympathy, Elle.

I wouldn't say the breakage was "terrible"; being the laughing stock wherever I went - what with plasters and bandages - gave me an insight into human kind. So kind I didn't even wish Karma on the guardians of Schadenfreude. Worse, when I opened the door (with difficulty) to the Angel (my son) who'd been to his first open air festival over the weekend, him shaking his head in disbelief: "Look at you. Can't leave you for five minutes."

The really funny thing (do indulge me and my narrative) that after two boys had helped my up and I had limped back home (just round the corner) that I went into denial. Ever the optimist. Next morning there was no denial. I called a taxi, left the house barefoot because I couldn't put any shoes on - unlike John, I don't wear flip flops - and what do you know? First thing on entering A&E (Disaster and other emergencies) the receptionist admonishes me for wearing no shoes. IN A HOSPITAL. The place you are more likely to leave with bugs than having entered. Anyway, when the doctor said yes, your left arm is broken, I still managed to smile. When they told me the other one too, I shed a tear. Being incredulous does that to you.

Back to you. I can only hazard a guess but dare say that a broken shoulder has more overall impact than a broken wrist/arm as the shoulder involves the back/spine. Commiserations. Read a book on stoicism. It'll stand you in good stead. And watch Bette Davis films back to back. Preferably with an eight kilo black cat (Fleury's son) pinning you down - providing the soundtrack (purring).

Before I forget: That breakage taught me even more patience than I already had.

      Best wishes,
      U

  72. Bless you, darling. So glad William is unharmed. We're going thru hell at the moment. My son is currently being detained under section 2 of the MHA with suicidal depression. (He is a careworker for vulnerable adults!) He is under review now and responding well to medication but will never go back to the job. His girlfriend is now living with us as her parents are fucking fuckwits and insisted she broke up with him. (she has now disclosed to us her and brothers mental and physical abuse by dad/not stopped by mum).
Our elderly dog Alfie has Mite. We now have Scabies. We took him to two vet practices but neither vet tested him nor warned us, but treated Alfie sympomatically. It has been painful (financially too!!) and distressing for all.
We must be Bad Luck Twins, or are being visited by The Shit Fairy as my mate calls it.
Hope that our luck changes and we all start to feel better soon.
Love to you and all your dear animals,
    Susan x

  81. Ah, John. There are times in our lives when as an old neighbor of mine used to say, we are "reaching up to touch bottom."
It goes without saying that William being okay makes us all so very happy but still, the accident, the scare- just more things to add to your hard time. It will all get better. Know that.
