Use It Or Lose It

This afternoon, I bumped into the chairman of our community council
He was hand delivering leaflets around the entire village.

He has been a big supporter of saving our village post office and has been intrumental in
Having a service, albeit a single afternoon service, reinstated to the village.
Unfortuately only a few villagers have utilized the service
so a few slap bottoms are in order here
as I call all Trelawnyd-ites to get off their arses and USE THE POST OFFICE!
It's open on Monday Afternoon between 1.30 and 3.30 pm

  2. Our local villages post offices went many years ago, then someone nicked our post box too!

  3. I like the term 'slap bottoms'. Just saying! But shame about the post offices. Our local village post office has reduced hours now as well, so France is also shutting down their rural services.

  4. I know if I had a post office close by, even if only a couple hours a week - I would use it to send off packages, get stamps, and have a little conversation with the locals!

  5. love going to the post office and picking up packages and chatting a minute with the post person there .. I live out in the country so they are more chatty and take their time here, although the mailmen are generally nice wherever I go. lol .. hellooo, mailman ~

  6. Yes, use it or lose it ... and if lost again, there would be no chance of getting it back. The community council chairman is to be commended for his efforts!

  7. I loved visiting the English post offices in the Shires. I surmise your post office is the same: a place to meet up with other villages, buy items we only get in cafes here in SA and finally to do postal stuff. I hope you manage to save yours. Please keep us updated. xx

  8. Would if I was there,
Will technology be the end of the post office as we have known it? I still receive bills in the mail and mail checks. My dinosaur side is showing.

    1. I do the same thing. I get my bills, write my checks, put them in the mailbox. All neat and tidy and I don't have to worry about the email thingee going wonky.
sorry for all the technical words.

  9. What is happening with the P.O. is disgraceful, Well done for drumming up support, John.

  10. Our nearest post office is in the process of changing hands. But it is doing so. And the post office will continue. In a small village. What always amazes me is the post office delivers all over the country. Same rates unlike some internet companies who think in the north east of scotland we are still using stage coaches and dont have roads so charge exorbitantly. What do people do at Christmas? Turn up for their Christmas stamps and to send their Christmas parcels to find a closed up shop and wonder why. Sheesh.

  11. It's world wide. Even here in suburban NZ our mail service has just been cut from 6 days a week to 3 days a week. Next step: 0 days a week, I'm thinking.

  12. They tried to do away with Saturday deliveries here in the US & there was a huge outcry from people who depend on the USPS to deliver medications & other important deliveries. I would rather paid higher postage rates than lose our postal services. We take things for granted until they are suddenly gone. Perhaps we should go back to writing letter & mailing cards rather than impersonal e-mails & e-cards.

    1. Excellent point. John said it above: use it or lose it.

  13. You don't know how much you'd miss something until it's gone! I sent 3 letters yesterday, but they were the first for months. Email has a lot to answer for.

  14. Our village P.O. has now been subsumed into a large corner of the Mairie. It is fine for buying stamps but once you've got them you don't visit for ages. Those who have a saving a/c with La Poste tell me that they have had restrictions on the money that they can withdraw.

  15. 'bottoms' John? Up here in a rather prim and proper Yorkshire, we would only slap hands in such circumstances.

But, seriously, I do agree - if you don't use it you will lose it - and then folk will moan about it.

  16. Like many people, I rely on email to keep in touch with friends these days - it's so much quicker and often more reliable. That, more than anything, must have contributed to the closure of so many rural post offices. I really can't remember when I last went into the only post office, which is the centre of town. We buy our stamps at the local Tabac.

  17. In the UK I bought books of stamps at Sainsbury's along with the Lottery ticket. Out of town superstores have a lot to answer for.
