Bake Off

Marie fucked up her French Arlette biscuits

With our guest winging his way back to the big city, And with the rain lashing down here in Trelawnyd, I have just had the opportunity to catch up with The Great British Bake Off.
The sixth series remains good fun and the secret to that , I think, is that the majority of contestants seem rather nice, well rounded people.
Of course, some of that comes from the fact that baking is basically an altruistic pursuit . Feeding people IS sociable and giving, although I am sure there is always an element of showing off present with the flashier classes.
This week it was the Scottish Granny Marie that got kicked out after a pretty bland show of her biscuits. Junior Doctor Tamal's innuendos about wet pastry elicited a " ooohhh arrrrrrh" moment and Sue Perkins broke poor Nadiya's box top whilst Mary Berry showed a set of thin lips when Dorrit  brought out a frog shaped biscuit cutter!

Sue fucked up Nadiya's box

" Bake Off" is a safe pair of hands on tv. It's sweet natured, ever slightly bland, and despite accusations of positive discrimination towards certain minorities , it is a showcase for talented amateurs to share a bit of skill.......
And skill is so often missing from modern day tv.

  1. mmfllmmnulfl, gulp. There that,s better.Just had a fresh baked scone with strawberry jam and cream. the rest of the batch has been distributed round the neighbours. You are so right, baking is sociable, with the bonus that 1 scone is perfect, any more is a step too far and they are best the day they are made.

  2. We love bake-off, though having been out of the country I haven't had a chance to catch up with the newest season. We'll probably start tonight!

  3. I love it John. And the first week I had Marie finally in my mind as the possible winner. How wrong can you be.

  4. It's nice TV and there's nothing wrong with that. Sometimes you want a spicy curry that blows your tongue out of your mouth; sometimes you want a cup of tea and a slice of Victoria sponge. Go Bake Off, you make people smile and that's a Good Thing.

ps did I mention I like Bake Off? :-)

  6. Wednesday evenings are booked for the next few weeks. No favourite yet, but I do rather like Nadiya's 'frightened frog' expression.

Masterchef is OK, but Bake Off is definitely better - a bit more down-to-earth compared to those snooty types with their head up their bum.

  8. We've only seen one season stateside and I loved it. It was hard for me to believe they were amateurs. Probably the most talented 'amateurs' in the world.

  9. I love it too. It's wonderful that they aren't all fancy pants professionals, but just people who might live next door to you. But I always get so hungry afterwards, even the failures look delicious to me and then I am scrounging the cupboards for a poor facsimile of a black forest cake.

  10. Agreeing with liv, above ... I can't read about or watch food prep right now; it makes my food choices while I'm dieting seem even plainer!

  11. Skill mad merit. What exotic ideas today. And the reason why, in spite of the drama the producers keep trying to inject into the show, I'm hooked on Project Runway. Not sure if you get it there, but basically the contestants must be able to design, sew, and complete runway-worthy garments in a ridiculously brief amount of time.

  12. Right now - and for the last few days - I am canning tomatoes. So, I don't want to even look at a stove or oven for the next week! Even on the television! But, I am sure that your Bake Off is a wonderful show. And anything has to be better that what the States terms "reality shows."

  14. The only problem I have with Bake Off is the effect it has on my attempts at healthy eating. Cue fat woman walking like a zombie towards M&S chanting "Must have biscotti, Must have Biscotti".

    2. Scotch egg and Biscotti? Yep, sounds like a good meal!

  15. I can't bear the programme but I understand that in a democracy we are all entitled to our own opinions? If there was a programme called "The Great British Sod Off" I would definitely give it a whirl. The first contestant to be voted off would be that dumpling - Paul Hollywood, quickly followed by the self-obsessed stale bloomer loaf - Sue Perkins.

I much prefer Mary Berry to Paul though...

  19. We found this show by accident and I am hoping this season miraculously reappears here soon. It is exactly what you said it is and it is just pure charming.

  20. I don't like cake (sorry, am I still allowed to live?) but let me know if there is going to be a best amateur sushi competition.

  21. Marie had a poor week but I'm not sure that she deserved to go. She had a lot more to give I think. The show is like a chocolate pudding. All warm and lovely inside.

  23. It's just as well I popped in today because your post reminded me I am supposed to make a date, banana and walnut loaf today...not one of each...but a combination of the three...with a few other ingredients tossed in for extra tasty flavour as well...

    I don't think I'll be roasted if I don't make it, though...

  24. I love "The Great British Baking Show" (that's what it's called here in the U.S.) but we won't get to see the new episodes until September, on PBS.

  25. Poor Nadiya ... she looks like she is expecting the next thing to be broken will be her !
This is much better than the television Bake Off !

  26. Oooh, this is cruel, John. We haven't even had series 5 on NZ telly yet.

  28. I'll miss Marie's 'worried' face ... she did it so well :-(

It is just easy watching, light hearted television ... baking and humour with a bit of food history thrown in, you can't go wrong really can you, I love it.

And I'm glad my oven hasn't got a glass door I'd be down on my knees watching things cook too!!

  29. We just watched this episode. I really don't see how Marie got booted over Dorett, or whatever her name is.
