Ireland Says Yes!

On this camp as Christmas Eurovision night where Conchita Wurst has proved herself to be an articulate and rather gracious ambassador for everything sweet natured, and accepting in this world,it is only fitting that the catholic nation of Ireland, in a historic referendum, has voted in gay marriage.
How bleeding wonderful is that!

Very emotional news from Ireland today. Could we not all vote for them tonight too? Was it good?

  10. No one should say who can love whom or can get married or not. Surely love and honesty are the most important things in a partnership not what bits youve got. . Great result!

Who would have thought. I heard the news on the radio at 10pm when I was in bed and about to sleep. For the first time ever, I sent my partner a text message from my bed about the news. You won't see anything like that happening soon in Australia.

You were right, Bonjana is fabulous.

  13. A referendum is the people speaking. You cannot slide a piece of paper between the law and the people creating it. Well, perhaps a ballot. Well done, Ireland.

  16. As Ricky Gervais has said, it's not that gay people want special privileges in same sex marriages, just err... oh I can't remember what the cross-dressing pervert said, all I know is that I agreed with it.

  25. It was indeed a great result for Ireland. I have a feeling that the US supreme court will come down on our side next month. It'll be interesting. Eurovision was fabulous as always but I was sad that Italy didn't quite get there.

  28. The Irish people with love in their hearts voted by a 2:1 majority in favour of marriage equality for same-sex couples, and made global history in the process and to my eyes the land looked fresher and brighter !

  30. Being an Irish American and knowing the grasp that the Catholic Church had on Ireland's government and icitizens, it comes as a great surprise to me that this lovely green isle has come out of the dark ages to become the first country to approve this referendum. Miracles do happen.

  31. Good results all round, a very happy day :-)

I thought there were a LOT of very good entries on last night's show. Serbia WAS as good as you said but I loved the cleverness of Sweden's entry.

A good night after a very good day.

  32. Hooray! A brilliant result but I was shocked to read in the same news report that homosexuality was only decriminalised there in 1992! Hopefully the rest of the world will follow Ireland's lead and take a stand for equality for all people.

As for Eurovision - sorry but Sweden was definitely my choice - Oh come on - an incredibly attractive man singing an anti-bullying anthem. Not a dry seat in the house. :-) Although i had a sneaking admiration for Latvia - it was bonkers.

  33. One of the happy consequences of this felicitous outcome is that it'll make Northern Ireland look even more out of step, being not only now the only part of the entire British Isles that doesn't permit same-sex marriage but also the only part of the western fringe/side of the continent that acts in such a way. It makes them look like a bigoted enclave, an 'anomaly' in effect - and it can only serve to increase the pressure on them to give in to the inevitable.

  34. I'm so glad the vote was so resoundingly "YES"! a 2 to 1 result not only sends a message....it shouts it!

  35. CONGRATULATIONS! May we SOON follow here in the US!

  36. It's wonderful news. I had a bit of a ding-dong with my local vicar and curate the other day. I know that same-sex marriages can't be conducted in the Church of England but foolishly assumed that a blessing was acceptable. The curate informed me that it is not because "a blessing is a sacrament". I told them that I don't want to be part of a church which excludes people. I haven't been to a service since.

  44. I loved Bojana! But I must say that sexy Swede won my heart. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. I say Bojana had it streets over Sweden, but then I am a big girl too, and hey, her song had everything Eurovision-desirable in it too. :) I did enjoy Belgium's entry as well. Great voice, interesting presentation. Our own guy Sebastian did a good job as well. The nice-guy of Oz music.

Wish I had even a skerrick of Conchita's elan. Really enjoyed her interview on Graham Norton's podcast the other week.

Eurovision is the only thing we turn on the tv for these days, that and the odd rugby game. I know, odd combo!

    Good job Ireland.
As for America and this is my take on it... most no votes come from large religious groups. Southern Baptist, the Born Agains and Mormons.
Strange is a country that preaches religious freedoms, some religions think they are the "Right One" and are not inclusive.
Some how the Catholics are much more inclusive.
The major push against the California vote was the Mormon Church
This is happening right now with the Muslims living here. They are demanding their rights to prayer in school and Sharia Law. At UC Davis the Muslims students demand that all Jewish students be kicked out of school, beat up and Sharia law installed.
    It is a huge mess.

    cheers, parsnip

  48. The happy news of Ireland's vote went all around the world. Best comment I saw was an irishman on the street being interviewed. "I'm all for same sex marriage - I've been having same sex with the missus for the past 30 years and I love it."
Common on Australia your being left behind.....

As for the Eurovision, I just couldn't be arsed this year as we always do so badly.
We watched the final instalment of the Hobbit trilogy and I shouted SEXY DWARF every time Richard Armitage was on screen playing Thorin Oakenshield.
