I went to my first meeting of slimming world today.
I wasn't nervous. A female dominated situation doesn't faze me much and I knew everyone would be very welcoming.
The " usual " leader wasn't there today, so I had her friendly stand in called Rita.
I liked Rita, she said I would "feel fabulous in a few weeks"
The woman taking the weigh in cackled loudly at that and chirped up rather optimistically " he looks fabulous now!"
I preened.
So I had the pep talk and was given all in the information very professionally. We had a big laugh about " syns" and I rolled my eyes with genuine surprise when she told me that chicken legs ( without the skin on) was a free food!
I filled out the forms, paid my fee and when I joined the weigh in queue I suddenly noticed that the woman behind me was eating a boiled egg!
" I haven't had any breakfast" she explained with a smile when I looked round.
" how many syns is that?" I asked, getting into the lingo
" Oh boiled eggs are free" she told me, a statement which prompted me to ask how many syns were in an average scotch egg! This led to a somewhat lively debate in the line involving four slimmers and the weigh in woman who kept calling me " Sweetie"
No one seemed to know, although one young woman at the back helpfully shared with me the fact that a standard onion bhaji was 5.5 syns!
Like I said everyone was very nice and friendly.....my first weigh in is next Saturday!
Hey ho!
You will have to make your own scotch eggs, if you buy reduced fat sausages, weight watchers shhhh don't tell, and wrap the meat round your hard boiled eggs then oven bake them without egg and crumbing them, it should be as few syns as a a sausage. I will watch your progress avidly.
ReplyDeleteYou are my own mary Berry x
DeleteA male dominated situation doesn't faze me.
ReplyDeleteI suspect NOTHING fazes you
DeleteMe neither, as long as they all look like Clooney McDreamy!!!!
DeleteThe word "syn" makes me want to puke.
ReplyDeleteSorry.
Its short for synergy apparently
DeleteWhatever that is
Sounds like Winnie ought to be accompanying you. Ask her along next time.
ReplyDeleteShe's at her ideal weight Ray.......lost nearly 3kilos since she came to us!
DeleteWhat? And did she do that all by herself? Clever girl!
DeleteSounds like torture to me. Eat and be happy. X
ReplyDeleteI found slimming world a lot easier than WW. I cant be doing with counting and weighing everything. Years ago (shh dont tell I just use the books at home if I put on), it used to be green and red days. It was so easy it comes back off in a jiffy. yes eggs and fat free yoghurt are free. so are all veg and used to be fruit as well.
ReplyDeleteSo as I said to Frugal Queen the other day on her blog. if you want ice cream like substance. use fat free yoghurt and frozen berries or frozen banana, whizz them up with a stick blender and there you go... SW ice cream (or should I say frozen yoghurt). You can add splenda but I like it tart. ;)
Go for it. Fingers crossed for you.
"Have some dust darling!"
More recipe tips please sol xx
DeleteI learned a new word. So, syns are a substitute for sins, eh? I wonder how our lives became so food centric.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes for a successful regime, and then healthy eating habits forever.
See above xx
DeleteWeigh-Ho.
ReplyDeleteI also find that stirring up fat free Greek yogurt and freezing it makes a perfectly satisfying substitute for ice cream. At least, as long as I don't slip and taste the real thing...
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised the woman didn't leave the egg until AFTER she was weighed. She could really have fooled herself.
ReplyDeleteShe was confident she had lost 4 lbs
DeleteOne of my fave Little Britain characters there LOL
ReplyDeleteSyns for sins? Clever. May your syns be few or at least, really good.
Simple solution John - just take the sausage meat and coating off your Scotch eggs and you'll be able to eat as many as you like!!
ReplyDeleteDuh!
DeleteAny organisation that calls any food but fast food a 'syn' is sinful in my book :-(
ReplyDeleteI'm really happy for you John. You haven't given up. That is something to be proud of.
ReplyDelete'So I preened!!' You've been hanging around chickens too long, John!!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with this. Do they talk about exercise? I figure if you burn off the same amount of energy you put in, then........
Yes they do.......as the dogs have got older, we dont walk as much as i did......i think i need to buy a young dog
DeleteMarjory Dawes says that if you cut something in half, it's half the calories and because it's half the calories, you can eat twice the amount !!!!!! She is summin else !!!!
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with Slimming World John. Shares in Scotch eggs are going to plummet !!! XXXX
Good luck with that, John. I mean it, seriously. Don't think of it as dieting, consider it abstaining.
ReplyDeleteLike Cro, I wonder why the woman didn't leave the boiled egg until after the weigh-in! Best of luck to you, John. If I know you, you will feel even more fabulous than you look now, in a few weeks time! xx
ReplyDeleteGood luck! Sounds like a great diet to me, boiled eggs and chicken.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm glad your allowed to sin at least a little. Although Scotch Eggs I imagine will send you directly to Hyll.
ReplyDeleteNice one! Lol best comment so far
DeleteI'm sure you had it in school, but as a review here's the Harris-Benedict equation:
ReplyDeleteBMR = 66.473 + (13.7516 x weight in kg) + (5.0033 x height in cm) – (6.7550 x age in years)
This give you a close approximation of your caloric burn and let's you know what caloric intake will result in weight loss.
Also, a quote from Wm. Blake....."You never know what is enough until you know what is more than enough"
Cheers
Errrrrrrrt
DeleteI'm still laughing at Mitchell's comment about Hyll!!
ReplyDeleteI've been cutting back and counting calories for a couple of months now, and lost a bit of weight. Now I seem to be at a standstill and my old reliable foods seem bland and boring. I need a good push to keep going. Good luck to both of us!
P. S. What, precisely, does "syn" mean?
ReplyDeleteI doubt that 'F**k' knows anything. Good luck with the Slimming World girls.
ReplyDeleteTesco Scotch Eggs 131/2 syns. Don't buy the scanbread! Good luck
ReplyDelete.13.5 eh?......ive got a few syns left over!
DeleteNot familiar with what you're doing but it sound LoCarb? Anyway, I'm on a diet as well...Those old "it's just a few pounds" are starting to multiply.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!
hughugs
I can vouch for their diet cola chicken recipe, John, Very tasty. Type it into YouTube and you should find it easily enough. Most definitely don't buy the scanbread. Horrible stuff!
ReplyDeleteagree scanbread is gross. and forget the hifi bars, I would rather have a proper chocolate digestive biscuit they are only 17 calories more. 87 calories in a mcvities to be precise
DeleteI've got friends who've had spectacular results with Slimming World and kept the weight off too, which is the bit that matters. I just ate less, as I ate nothing *wrong* already. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteSlimming World is fabulous - good on you for joining. I've lost 45 lbs since January and can totally vouch for their eating plan. You NEVER need to be hungry. Good luck x

ReplyDeleteI'd say forget the "syns" and count the kilocalories (but what do I know?).
ReplyDeleteI'd say forget the "syns" and count the kilocalories (but what do I know?).
ReplyDeleteWhy did I say it twice?
DeleteI don't know. (Silly blogspot software might)
But at least my recommended method is free (and it works - that I do know).
We have Slimming World in the US. I had never heard of it.
ReplyDeleteHow much does it cost?
Pay-Ho
What are syns? I've never heard of Slimming World before. Is it a lot like Weight Watchers? Didn't you do Weight Watchers for a while? Slimming World sounds like an attraction at Disney World. I agree that you look fabulous, sweetie.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie Sweetie
As an ex-dieter, I will say to you, don't do it! The diet industry makes billions every year out of people who can't keep the weight off and come back time after time, and blame themselves for it! 95% percent failure rate for weight regain within three years, I believe (including so called lifestyle ones). and then, if you've damaged your metabolism, you gain that little bit more as well. Look into HAES (health at every size) instead, give no more dollars to a cruel industry, and let go of the shame they like to promote.
ReplyDeleteThe difference is, you develop a healthy eating routine, you lose weight, are able to do exersise much easier and if you need an op (i.e me does!), you are more likely to survive the anaesthetic!
ReplyDeleteSyn = is any food that is not a Free food or one that isn't being used as an 'Healthy extra' .
Yes, the Diet industry does make billions but, not all of them are as reliable as a good, healthy, living plan. There lies the secrets - good, healthy, living, were you can eat anything just plan and have plan b's too.
As for the Scan Bran, I'm addicted to it lol!
Oh, I do eat chocolate bars occasionally, I plan for them and save up my syns!
Good luck John and watch out for that saucy weigh - in lady! xx
