Lurid Red Ball

Chris is away all week and I am presently in the living room reading Gerald Durrell's second book " Encounter with Animals"... It's a cracking read.....
Last night it was Meg licking a pained Albert that caught my attention
Tonight it is Winifred
She is lying in front of the fire with her lurid red ball
( she adores this tiny bit of plastic in an unbelievably unhealthy way)

A few minutes ago, she woke up with a start,
Turned her head to check if the aforementioned ball was still there
Craned her head a little more
Kissed the ball
Then flopped down back to sleep

They never fail to amuse me

Dear soul. They have so little and are so attached to what they have. Now who does that remind me of......oh....yeah.

  2. Our late great cat Milhous had a toy we called his dingle sock. It was an old sock of X's. He had put a jingle bell in it and tied it shut. Milhous carried his dingle sock everywhere. He put it in his dish while he ate. Then one day it disappeared, never to be found again. Milhous didn't seem to miss it.

    Love,
    Janie

  3. Awww.... gorgeous girl.

Neither of my dogs are that attached to anything. Rosy is just impelled to remove the squeak and all the stuffing from any toy they get and Suky doesn't play with toys unless Rosy initiates a game.

She does regularly fall asleep with a hide chew in her mouth and will wake with a start and growl when it falls out because she thinks someone is stealing it, but that's about it.

  4. I knew you would be Gerald Durrell in disguise. You really should put all of these stories in a book. :D I would buy it.

  5. Gerald Durrell sounds like someone I should look up, since I'm looking for a new read. We had a golden retriever that was absolutely obsessed with her ball. She'd tuck them in next to us on the couch or easy chair, then stare at us all night long, hours on end, until we threw it. At which point she'd bring it back and start all over again. It's nice to have a passion in life, innit?

  7. My DH says the same pretty much as Delores, He says if all you owned was your tennis ball and a furry giraffe/cow stuffed toy, you would love them a lot too! :O). I guess they know when something is really theirs! :O)

  8. Gerald Durrell is a favorite writer of mine and every so often I buy a copy of My Family and Other Animals to read again and to give away. How sweetly your dog guards her prized possession. This 2d book sounds like a must read for me.

  9. When MilkBones were passed around Angus swallowed his whole. Fiona retreated to the sofa, held her bone between her forefeet all evening, torturing Angus. At the end she ate it.

  10. One of our cats,Oscar, hides his mouse toys under the chest of drawers in the spare room, his ball toys under the buffet in the library. everyday he takes a ball for a walk, yowling the whole time, until the ball gets put back under the buffet. I'd love to know at goes on in his mind.

      Maybe? :)

  12. Years ago I had a Newfoundland/Husky mix that felt the same about the neighborhood cats....they never understood why he picked them up and took them home and put them under one paw.

  13. How precious! Do you have a spare? Just in case?

    1. If he had a spare, the title of this post would be - in the plural - even more enticing than it is now.

    2. Which makes the title of the following post ever so disappointing. What a wasted opportunity!

  16. I am going to download some Gerard Durell to my Kindle. And continue to pine just a little bit for a dog. When we move to the country, we will have a dog. We will. Definitely :)

  20. Our furry friends tend to get attached to the most random things. I had a dog once that was attached to a little rubber chicken and he would rarely let it out of his sight! He played with that rubber chicken for two years until it eventually fell apart.

  25. The cats go in fits and starts with favouring toys. Phoebe currently loves a little yellow sparkle ball. Jo is nonplussed by the toys, but when she wants to attack something, anything can be fair game: cat toys, twist ties, bits of paper.

  26. Durrell’s entire collection of books has a place of honor in our library. I had never read them while living in England. A local grade school came to Menagerie Manor in the 80’s for a field trip to see our then animal rescue operation. One of the teachers told us we should call our home by that name. Weeks later she showed up with a wooden sign engraved and hand painted and Menagerie Manor it has been since then.

  27. I too have a ball obsessed dog. We currently have 8 in the garden and she will play fetch all day long. She also likes to put one in her food dish and eat around it. Crazy!!
