Please, Please, Please,

Hijacked by the sickly sweet John Lewis Advert... this sad little song has nothing to do with Christmas
It is perhaps the saddest song I have heard in a long time

Well of course I had to google John Lewis, being Canadian and all and not knowing what John Lewis was, and I think that ad is priceless. So sweet.

  7. Great song. I don't find it sad though. I heard Morrissey sing it recently too. Morrissey is cool.

  14. Thank you. You have softened my gritty grumpiness into mellow melancholy.

  15. I kind of agree with Razmataz. Life is tough, deal with it. The melody is lovely though.

I like a good sad song now and again, this is a good one! Had to look up John Lewis too...favorited them and will go back to check out their store! The advert was great...and no it didn't have a thing to do with what the song is about! But I liked that the the young boy was impatient because he wanted to give his Mom and Dad their gift...not because he was being a "greedy Gus" wanting Christmas to come so he could see what he'd been given!

    Thanks for sharing John!

  20. Very good advertising dept there at John Lewis.

On the song however, I'd say to want what you have instead of wanting what you can't. Life is much easier that way.

Isn't it wonderful how many of the comments can turn a sad song into something funny. It says something about this bunch.

  21. Melancholy song - when 'the black dog' comes I have to avoid such music or I wont leave the house for days!

And here I thought it was going to be James Brown's passionate begging for a lost love.

  24. Okay, so the good old U.S.A. votes that this is a positive and hopeful song. The melody is lovely and it's about trying again and again for what you want, or at least what you think you need. It's about picking yourself up and brushing yourself off, and never giving up, no matter what! I will concede to a dash of "poor me" but that's to be expected when you've never really gotten what you want, or think that you haven't.

So often we start out thinking that "this" is everything we have ever wanted, and as soon as it doesn't work out, jump ship and forget that we ever felt that way to begin with. Kudos to love's eternal flame!

  25. Her voice has such a haunting melancholy sound to it, I think she could make any song sound sad.

  26. I think Morissey had it first!
I have to say I prefer the Smiths original, but this is fairly haunting.
