Erddig

Erddig's back garden

Chris hates his photo being taken

One of the entrances to the Gardens

My mother-in-law has a slightly unhealthy obsession with Downton Abbey....so it was unsurprising that we took her to one of our local country Houses this morning for a fantasy visit to Upstairs Downstairs land.
Erddig (pronounced Er- thig) is a beautiful National Trust House situated a stones throw from the English Border.
The house was built in the late 1700s and remained in the Yorke family until 1973 when it was taken over by the National Trust, rain damaged, practically derelict and still without electricity.
Today, most of the house and grounds have been restored, ideal for a lady who harbors the fantasy of being Lady Mary!

My Favourite room in the house.. the Sweet White Bedroom with the Chippendale bed

The scullery and kitchens were more interesting to me than the main state rooms ...me thinks that in a previous life I was a housemaid........hummm things haven't changed much for me in this life

Run by a extensive volunteer staff, the house is a delight to visit.....

  3. Your mother-in-law is the Lady Mary. My mother is the Dowager Duchess. You're Daisy (the scullery maid). Where is Chris in all this (other than hiding from cameras)?

  6. Very pleasant, I wouldn't mind living there - if the stairs had a lift! That kitchen looks a bit more like a dungeon. Love the lawns!

  7. Hello John:
Erddig remains one of our favourite of all National Trust properties possibly because, much in the same way as Calke Abbey, it was never a really grand house. We first visited it very soon after it had been acquired by the National Trust and, possibly as you, have watched its complete restoration over the years.

Happily, at least for us, we have not seen, nor will we, a single episode of Downton Abbey!!

  18. Like everyone else says, it looks like a nice place to visit.

Stately homes always remind me of mental assylums for some reason.

I've noticed that you and Chris look very much alike, like bookends (in a nice way lol)x

You were the housemaid? I was the gardener!! Remember? I'm the one who dragged the dirty basket of turnips in that time, tracking mud and dead leaves across your clean floors. You hated me back then (but secretly you loved me. Admit it. You know you did.)

  23. A beautiful old country house, it's such a treat to see them resurrected from ruins.
Love the scullery, I get the feeling I have worked there in a past life :)

  29. Shame that the paneling in the bedroom is painted. Yes kitchens always get my first look. If you're ever in Brighton, the kitchen in the Pavilion is wonderful.

  31. Chris hates his photo being taken? I don't think you needed to tell us that - it shows.

Love Erddig - went there a few years ago.

  32. Reminds me. Must renew my Garden Organic membership so we can get in to Audley End for free.

I'll go anywhere with a kitchen garden, and Howard could look at vintage baking kit for days, but neither of us have much interest in the Posh quarters. Think one of the few places I've see the whole house was Llanachaeron, as you could only get to the working parts of the estate through the family's room.
