Australia

Its been a terribly wet day, and a miserable one.
It is the sort of day when the driving rain even infiltrates your underpants,
so that every time your return to the house after yet another soaking,
you begin to steam.
So this evening I was so glad to see that one of my very favourite movies is on the television.
Big..... brash....... artificial.....and slated by the critics on its release, "Australia", in my opinion is an old fashioned romp that has it ALL
It has a sexy hero (Hugh Jackman at his most gung ho) a feisty herione with a questionable English Accent (Nicole Kidman) and a cute child star with bambi eyes (Brandon Walters) add to the mix some wonderfully bravura set pieces (the bombing of Darwin and a particularly over-the top cattle on a cliff scene), a screen baddie that borders on the Pantomime (David Wenham) and a score that features "Over the Rainbow" and "Schafe können sicher weiden ( Bach's "Sheep may safely graze") and for me it is almost the perfect film....
SIT BACK...open the chocs....and enjoy

  1. I think it's a brilliant film, probably for all the reasons you've already mentioned, anyway it's good old fashioned entertainment. Enjoy those chocs!

I'm glad it is wet and horrible there. Now everyone involved in your event will be saying how smart you are. That movie was on TV here just this past week. I didn't have any chocolate though.

  4. I have kept Australia on my recorder and just watch some every once in a while. Silly to keep, but I enjoyed it!

  7. I meant to watch this, but hubby insisted on Top Sodding Gear and then his "crush" Julia Bradbury climbing up a Volcano! Weve had not too bad weather here - you should have stayed in Sheffield. xxxxx

  8. I saw the movie at the theater and really enjoyed it, especially the way it was filmed. I did think that there were about three times in the movie where it could have ended but when it continued I liked how every new story emerged. I also thought that Nicole Kidman did a pretty good job and Hugh Jackman, well what wasn't to like about him?? Hubba hubba!!! :-)

  12. How I wish it would rain like that here! We are in a really bad drought here. Texas seems to have more than her share of droughts. Not to mention many, many, many days of well over 100 degrees every day. Whew... Okay I am done whining. Sounds like you totally made the right decision on changing the date of your opening.

  13. Glad you liked it. I could only watch the first 20 minutes, hated it!All stereotypes and myths. If you want a really good movie about Australia catch 'Oranges and Sunshine' David Wenham is brilliant in it, as are all the actors and it's a true story!

  14. Off topic but.... I went to a block party today and there was a couple with a 10 week old Scottie (y?) puppy and I quoted your recent praise of George in particular and the breed in general. She was the cutest thing ever!

  15. Hugh Jackman....hubba hubbah!
I have seen the trailers but not the movie. I hope I will get to see it someday. Hot and sultry here in Midwest USA.

  16. With the hour difference, it was just too late for me. I think I'm probably more of a 'Passport to Pimlico' sort of viewer anyway.

  19. I didn't watch it and now I'm sorry I didn't. I love the director and Moulin Rouge is one of my all time favourite films. Bad Craig for missing it.

  21. Funny - but out here we laugh at this movie for its embarrassment of 'overkilling the culture'!

Rain in Wales, heatwaves in US and Canada, snow and cold down here in Australia - sure is peculiar weather. Had our coldest July day in 25 years recently.
