"Gawd Bless 'em.....one and all"

I was up in the night suffering a bout of vomiting (I cannot actually remember the last time that happened)..so I feel a little washed out and wan this morning.....I have had to forgo my usual strong coffee for a cup of tea and with my new organic hot water bottle ( Constance) keeping my belly warm when I got up at 3am to lie on the couch. I do feel much better now.
Yesterday Nu rang me from London, all breathless and excited..... she knows that on the quiet I have always been a bit of a royalist and she had heard before I did that William is going to get married to the demure Kate Middleton in the new Year!!! Apparently the royal couple are going to be living near us, somewhere in North Wales ( William is serving at RAF Valley, which is on the Island of Angelsey- just down the coast)
and Nu was tickled pink that I might be amused by the good news.
I am, in fact, quite amused.
I make no bones that I rather like the Royal Family. It is not a fashionable thing to be a Royalist in today's "angry" Britain but like my parents and grandparents before them, I have inherited a kind of respect for the tradition of Monarchy.
I cannot be doing with the bleeding heart lefties that bang on about "fairness" and "costs" when referring to the wealth of the Royals......to me it is plain and simple....they are there by a simple accident of birth....just like I am and just like you are.....what right has anyone got to remove their wealth or privilege? No one has the right to remove mine! (if I had any that is)...
Ok the minor royals need to get their houses in order , I will concede that ( I suspect Buckingham Palace has already orchestrated this) but as for new generation post Charlie, all I have to say is good luck to them!!!
The Royal family, has just been re franchised

  1. Good Morning John! I have to tell you that I was/am a big Princess Diana fan--I got up early in the morning to see the wedding and watched all the events with her funeral as well. I am intrigued by the Royal family have kept up with this romance as much as I could. Having said that, I do so hope that the press will take it a little easier on them than they did Princess Diana--By the way, what did you think of William giving Kate his mother's ring? Some comments here were that it was jinxed and he shouldn't have...I thought it was a lovely gesture.

Well, at any rate, it looks like you're going to have someone new to deliver eggs too--And I so hope you feel better!! Take care!!

  2. Have to confess that I wa not a big Diana fan - I can totally see why Charles gets on so well with Camilla. I'm just wondering if we will get the day off work! xxxxx

  3. You might be surprised to read that I quite agree. I was always rather indifferent to the Queen Mother – not my era, perhaps. But I like the current generation. I think Charles will make a good King, and I’ve a real soft spot for Camilla and both of the boys. Like you say, an accident of birth has left them with few choices in life.

I still find the national response to the death of Diana both intriguing and sad. I think it was that event that made me reconsider my previous opinion of the Royal Family. Setting aside the cynicism of Tony Blair/New Labour and their manipulation of the media (a foretelling, if only we had realised, of things to come), the sight of the two boys at their mother’s funeral is still upsetting to watch.

I hope that David Cameron doesn’t indulge himself in the same way as Blair. I suspect he won’t. Blair represented an era of crude egotism (epitomised by the national ‘grief’ at Diana’s death, and his arrogant disregard for the democratic system). The public, I think, have largely moved on, and Cameron (if not Clegg) appears to be quite aware of this.

Your comment about “anger” is interesting, and is something I’ve thought a lot about recently. The anger of the Blair/New Labour decade I characterise to be that of a petulant, spoiled child: narcissistic, self-engrossed, indiscriminate (yet discriminating) and insatiable. Anger, as we witnessed last week in London, will now find a different, communal (and some might say, positive) expression.

  4. I agree with you all about this - there is nothing like a good royal wedding to cheer everyone up during times of crisis (I am slightly joking, but I think it's true). My only beef about the Windsors is they don't have ENOUGH political power or influence. I'd rather be ruled by some poor sod who was born into a position of responsibility, than some devious bastard who has been seeking it all his working life - if, indeed, he did have a working life before entering parliament. Besides which, I actually quite like Charles, he's a bit of a farmer - like you and George the Third, John!

  5. Having no experience with this type of government, I can only say, I wish the boys had taken more after Diana, I see too many bits of Charles in their faces.

I mean no disrespect...just saying Diana was a beauty.

  6. I thinks Wills has a lot of his mothers mannerisms. Especially with his eyes.
They are saying on CNN this wedding will equal or surpass Charles and Di's wedding.
We are planning the party here for the wedding already.

  7. I'm not even British but I'm a secret Royalist myself. They are the Hollywood stars of Europe, tradition and glamour all in one. Like any other person, they have their good and their bad sides. Having confessed to being a groupie, I would kill for one of those shopping bags which Charles is supposedly having made out of his old curtains! The man knows how to recycle!

    Hope you feel better soon.

  10. Good we are on the same page. I tend to be somewhat of a 'lefty' as far as politics go but I have always had a soft spot for the Monarchy. Since the Queen is still the sovereign head of Canada, we are and have always been aware of their presence.
It would be nice to see this generation of Royals break the mold/pattern as far as fidelity goes. Hope they are stronger than their parents and ancestors.

I bet Princess Diana wasn't "her" real name.

  12. Morning John, hope you`re feeling better! I was rather excited to hear the news about William myself! I alway thought his mother was just a true classic lady.

  13. Well Said !
Princess Diana brought the fairy tale dream & glamour to the Royals which ended so sadly & tragically. She will always be adored. This brings a much needed fresh romance which seems very real for once !
I can understand why William wanted to give Kate his ( dead ) mother's ring - but it never really LOOKED like an engagement ring - just hoped Kate likes it ! Must admit though it does seem to suit her.
Wish my mum still lived on Anglesey - might bump into them in the pub ! Used to play on the beach infront of RAF Valley as a child !

  14. I think I've always been a Royalist, too, even though I'm not British.
I was quite annoyed when Mrs. Obama put her hand on the Queen's shoulder, and even more so annoyed when people here didn't seem to understand why she shouldn't have done it!
    Ugh.

I do wish William and Kate a long and happy life together.

Congratulations to all you Brits on this! I'm very happy for the young couple. Princess Di and I were pregnant together (well, at the same time anyway) with our firstborns and I became a huge admirer of her in the last years of her life. (It started when I first heard that she'd shaken hands with people with AIDS without gloves on. I fell instantly in love.) I was truly, deeply grieved when she died. I've always felt a kind of vicarious maternal instinct where her boys were concerned and wish them nothing but deep and lasting happiness (which seems like it would be SO much harder to attain as a Royal with everyone constantly looking up your skirt but what do I know? I'm American. :-)
I hope you're feeling better John!

  18. Someone has to be famous. Better your royalty, people who have grown up with the responsibility, than our shallow, overnight successes here in the U.S., most of whom have no manners whatsoever.

  19. When Bill and Katie move to Trelawnyd, they may need a butler and someone who will be capable of ironing his helicopter jumpsuit. So - practise bowing now. You're just the kind of chap they will be looking for. You will also be able to supply them with fresh eggs.

  20. Yorkshire Pudding - Hysterical! I laughed so hard I think I woke my sleeping husband in the next room. John, don't listen to him!
(Though they might appreciate the eggs :-))

  21. I remember getting up early to watch Charles' and Diana's wedding when I was a kid...I had such a crush on her, still do.
Tom has a good point, never really thought about it like that.

  22. I was excited to see the news John. Growing up with a mother and all grandparents except one from England and being Canadian I have always liked the Royal Family and have enjoyed watching them. I liked Dianna and I think William is a lot like her. I wish them both a happy life. Hey...I hope you get the chance to see them up close! Hope you're feeling better today...take care. Maura :)
