junebug
Just watched a little indie film called Junebug. A strange understated little film, that explores the themes of belonging, familys' inabilities to communicate, and small town life and loneliness.
One pivitol scene centres around new city bride Madeline (Embeth Davidtz) an English Speaking art shop owner. She has accompanied her cheerfull husband(Allessandro Nivola) to his southern country home town for the first time. At a church meeting, with his prickly mother, mute father, brother and sister in law, she listens to him sing a hymm beautifully. His family listen in rapt tearfull awe, and the camera captures her face albeit briefly, but tellingly, as she sees her husband in a whole different light. It is a clever, understated scene, in a clever understated film.
family life is like that isnt it? understated,....you blink once and you miss it. How easy it is to see other people's relationships when you concentrate on them in a cinema for 2 hours. Sometimes I wish I concentrated on my own in such a concentrated way......
