A Fine

Its colder today and it's sleeting and trying to snow.
The village looks bleak in this kind of daytime as for the most part you cant see the pools of lights and the lit fires from the road outside the huddles of houses on the side of the Gop.
At dusk and beyond, the home lights always look more cosy.

This morning I've completed some mandatory training, priced a professional birthday cake up and taken Mary for an ear check up at the vets. She's still itching her 600£ surgery site and the vet's shoulder shrug cost me a further 20£ and petrol costs.....at least they had the good grace to blush a bit!
Such is life.

When I got home the weather deteriorated a bit and so before lighting the fire I fed Irene her daily treat of sour bread . The postman arrived when I was still on the field, he waved impatiently for me to come over he had a large parcel of postcards and a box for me to sign for.
"A pressie from Hawaii" he shouted into the wind "I wish I was there !"

Not everything that is pushed through my letterbox has a positive  connotation.
Yesterday I received a speeding fine for 100£.
I cant really afford such a sum!
The mobile camera that caught me was hidden away at the bottom of a local hill in a semi rural spot and although I was doing 36 miles an hour a few feet into a 30 miles an hour zone I got charged.
ok, ok hands up, I did break the law  and so I should not be bleating, but it does smack, just a little of a money making scheme, especially as the alternative offer of a "speed awareness course" could be taken up at the knock down cost of £92 !
Anyhow, I wont bang on , especially as I have just learnt that I have to fork out an additional 400£ for an up to date pension forcast document for the divorce lawyers!!!
Divorce is a fucking expensive do!
Pay up and shut Up John!

Luckily the rest of my post has proved to be a delight.....40 cards today, and a delightful gift from Lorna in Hawaii (thank you dearheart).

I've been amazed at the artistry of the entries

Dear Mathew

Dear Mathew,

I received your card and letter on Friday.
I wish you had put a return address on it.
I have thought about it a great deal over the past two days
This is my reply.

"Being lonely can be the most dreadful of feelings to deal with but being lonely and unable to be yourself in a place that has been your much loved home for six decades must at times be unbearable.
I was moved to tears by your description of  the family party. Being an actor who smiles through though the petty, snide and supposedly funny asides from others who think it funny to publically "out" you takes great courage and believe me, if you were with us all in a real Going Gently world, rather than in the virtual world we all inhabit here, you would be hugged long and hard by me and the other much more gentler souls who visit here.

Suicide is an option . I understand that and I respect your thoughts and plans about how you want your life to go but now you have shared how you feel in this "safe" place maybe there are other safe places, safe friends, safe professionals, safe people and safe gay organisations to share your burdens and your dark thoughts with.

Carrying around  the shame of being gay for half a century is too long. In anyone's mind it is wrong and your letter perhaps points to that. I am touched that Going Gently has allowed you to smile at another perspective of being a middle aged gay pongo! It is my perspective and mine alone, I understand that.
(and no I have no idea where I picked up the phrase)

Please Email me (jgsheffield@hotmail.com)or write to me again you have my address. I can facetime or skype regardless of the time difference if that's a help.

In my experience people are generally kind souls.
but its hard to see that sometimes when things feel bleak and overwhelming."

With my best wishes.

John
