Bollards

It is not clear on the photo on the right, but the Council workmen have laid a load of hardcore under and beyond the field gate so that I can use it as a car park without churning up the mud. Bollards are proudly in place, and although the weather "looks" lovely, it has literally pissed down for most of the day.
Chris is back tomorrow ( with at least one fat rascal!) so another early start for me.

Boys and their toys and a fat Bastard!

I have never quite understood the fact that men ( well straight men anyway) love to be involved with diggers/JCBs and all things mechanical. The small army of workmen were hard at work laying tarmac and cementing in "my" new bollards when I got home after a night shift, and amid the workmen were 2 local farmers, an old guy from the village and Steve, the village "elder", all with their noses in the cement, and all with friendly advice for the benign workers, who seemed to be enjoying the attention they were causing.

Now watching this sort of work leaves me rather cold, but they seemed endlessly fascinated by the nuances of cement formation and the benefits of rigid versus plastic bollards! I did pop over briefly to give the workers a load of eggs ( which they seemed rather pleased with), but I was more than happy to leave them all well alone.

Posted a load of Christmas gifts to various "far away friends" this morning and spent some time with the post mistress offering her a little support as I was nursing her uncle on ITU last night.
Chris is away for a couple of days in Harrogate for a stoke conference so I hope he brings me back one of the famous Betty's Tearoom Fat Rascals (see pic)
I use to live in York when I was a psychiatric Nurse and loved going into the famous Betty's for a fat rascal and a coffee!.............................Years later I went in to buy one and actually forgot the name of the famous "bun".....I still cannot believe that I asked the rather flummoxed sales girl for a "fat Bastard" by mistake.

28 Weeks later

I am so looking forward in seeing the remake of Chuck Heston's brilliant post apocalyptic movie The Omega Man (1971).The Movie preview of I Am Legend (2007) (The original title of the novel by Richard Matheson was actually written in 1954), looks wonderful!

There seems to always be an audience for this end-of-the-world genre, and to support this theory I have just "enjoyed" 28 Weeks Later (2007) , the bloody sequel to Danny Boyle's excellent 28 Days Later... (2002)

The remake is taut and bloody and it was almost as frightening as the original, but as many sequels tend to be, not quite! Chuck Heston did it a whole lot better

Gridlock

Joan has been watching the 4 JCB s and trucks that have arrived with a small army of blokes to widen the lane and to put the bollards in place. Some neighbours have been rather put out despite the pre-warning signage, but that's life I guess.

"Women are like Amazons"

I think the above quote sums up the BBC flagship costume drama of "Cranford" (2007) quite wonderfully. It is spoken by one of the townsfolk of a rural 1842 Cheshire town, who understands quite clearly (as Elizabeth Gaskill obviously did) the small absurdities and major tragedies in the lives of isolated small community women. The largely female cast absolutely shine, in this ambitious production, that effectively see-saws between hilarity and moving pathos. Standouts include Eileen Atkins as the town's arbiter of political correctness and Imelda Staunton as the hysterical Miss Pole.

This series has caught me by surprise! It is a wonderful piece of television.
Nige left for home this afternoon, as the weather has turned for the worse. He will be glad to miss the voting on Strictly come dancing tonight (He called it the X factor for the middle classes!- which was a little waspish!)
Great to sit in next to the fire anyhow watching Gethin getting through to the quarter finals and the good folk of Cranford coping with the advent of the railways!

Nigel's cooking

Gethin has done very well in Strictly come dancing this evening (39 points for his first dance) and it is lovely having Nige visiting as he is busy in the kitchen making dinner, whist we are watching the lovely Gethin, Matt and pig-in-a- dress Letitia,( who is rapidly turning into one of my favourites)! battle it out. Great to have a visitor that you don't have to look after!
I have had him busy today! as a badger had lifted part of hen fencing up overnight and most of the girls had escaped by 9am! We managed to corral them all beck up before taking the dogs to the beach then off to Llandudno for lunch at Osborn's . Lladudno had a Christmas parade going on led by a really bouncy drum band of middle aged women (Chris uncharitably called them a troupe of hippy lesbians). Not sure where 20 Star Wars stormtroopers have to do with Christmas, but they looked interesting enough!!!!!

Sunset from the Gop

Nearly killing a hooker, painting the Church radiators and complaining DOES work

I am looking just a little worried as I nearly killed one of the black hookers this afternoon. Cleaning out the coop I propped a spade against the house and it promptly slipped sidewards and clonked one of the hookers on the head. The poor thing immediately fell over and looked.....well...dead! Eyes shut! legs up in the air and-the whole R.I.P thing.
Being the emergency expert that I am I tried to check for vital signs ( not easy I can tell you) and I was sure the little girl was breathing but she was certainly totally comatose. Fearing a subdural haematoma I put her in the nesting box and contemplated a quick dash to the vets, but thought better of it as there was very little that he could do!. Gawd I felt guilty. Anyhow a few minutes of rest and she started to come around, albeit slowly. The picture was taken half an hour or so later!

This morning Ann from the Parish council, called round to ask if I would like to volunteer for some Church work! Don't worry I have not found religion, but I WILL be painting the new Church radiators next week......all very Archers !

And finally-I am so happy that the council has listened to me and will be repairing the road and Cottage wall barriers from the 1st of December!! It actually makes a change that an organisation like Flintshire Highways actually listened to my worries and complaints about the Lane's corner and now have done something about it!! and only in a matter of weeks rather than years! Good service! great news
