ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful aria. Full of sorrow and joy at the same time. It gives a specific kind of hope that this delightful memory will become reality for the one last time - in the breeze, in the sound of a dove or under the palm tree. Like first love.

ReplyDeleteThe pearl fishers! I have seen it a few times and every time I think why on earth isn't this more often done?
ReplyDeleteI've seen it on stage twice, though there are moments of great beauty in it. However, I always regret that Georges B. really does to death at least one of the two biggest 'tunes' in the whole piece, just as though he KNEW he'd got a hit on his hands. - though all the repetitions rather do devalue it.
