I slept heavily for five hours , had an hours tuition on running a team meeting professionally ( my next two clients are on teams on Wednesday) then went to the florists and brought big sprigs of blue larkspur which I bound together to give to my sister Ann for her birthday.
She was out so I left the flowers and card in a watering can
I’m emotionally tired today. One of my patients is delirious and dying and mistook me for their son over the weekend, saying all those things they wanted to say but didn’t have the chance to.
It was a hard listen
I feel emotionally on almost empty this afternoon.
So me and the Welsh went for a paddle at the beach.
Roger loves getting wet. Mary less so. So I carried my old gal and the boys paddled up to our knees and as we did so I let the emotional void fill with cold feet, and chilly sand between my toes.
Roger just barked at the waves and grinned.
Mary rested her head on my shoulder and hugged close
And I’m reminded just how good a hug feels on a sad day
An old man paddling with his Welsh terriers

Well, that would be an emotionally taxing conversation. Glad you got some quality time with the pups.
ReplyDeleteI’ve got a nice brunch booked too with a friend
DeleteWhat an emotionally draining experience for you in those dark hours. Since the patient has dementia, you or someone else may hear it again if you have another night shift soon.
ReplyDeleteI applaud your means of centering yourself today: time with Mary and Roger and water.
Sleep well tonight!
Hugs!
I’ve also taken an annual leave day this week which will help
DeleteYou've painted such a poignant picture. Hoping you're feeling better and all is well in the cottage. Sleep well, John dear.
ReplyDeleteI’m not feeling unwell, just a bit weary
DeleteBeing by the sea when you're emotionally wrung out, is so therapeutic. Glad Mary was there to give you a hug and glad Roger was there to make you smile.
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to Ann. I'm sure she'll love the flowers. xx
She did, I was sorry I missed her
DeleteMy image of you holding Mary brought tears as did the mental picture of the patient saying words meant for a son.
ReplyDeleteShe’s my old gal
DeleteAn old man (shut up, I'm 67 and don't feel old) loved and admired by many. xo Kate
ReplyDeleteGenerally I have to accept I am seen as an old man
DeleteJust wait til you're 75! And still very short ...
DeleteHugs!

I am !pizza and a beer and a disaster film
DeleteI was just thinking how much I need to go to the cold river nearby for a good icy soaking. It's just way too hot here right now.
ReplyDeleteDid you ready my former reply to you
DeleteGlad you had some time with the dogs to decompress . Working in PAL Care and counseling must be very draining . Make sure you have those little moments to refill your own cup . Just because it’s worthwhile and satisfying does not make it easy . I think the longer you care for people the more they affect you . When I was young I thought I would toughen up with experience ! but I think the opposite is true . Those raw moments really touch your heart as do some patients .
ReplyDeleteI feel more normal now ๐๐๐๐๐
DeleteI remember my father at that stage, and I know I could not do what you do. Beach and dogs sounds great.
