The Sheep Detectives

The lisping choir in full Latin mode.
Loved it

Today was a bit of escapism. The Sheep Detectives is an odd piece which does for sheep what Watership Down did for rabbits. In it, we join a flock of sheep living within their own rather complex and at times unfathomable rules with hero worshipped Shepherd ( Hugh Jackman) in charge. After his murder they have to come together in order to solve the mystery of whodidit, and the interaction of the characters voiced by the likes of Patrick Stewart, Bryan Cranston, Julia Lewis-Dreyfuss and Chris O Dowd proves to be much more entertaining that the activity of the more human cast, headed by Emma Thompson
Light, mostly frothy, but at times it’s very Disney emotional which bring the tears flowing when certain sheep are in trouble; it’s a kids film more enjoyed by adults , just as the novel watership Down was a children’s book for adults.

Saw The Sheep Detectives last week - loved it so much went back to see it again. Heart warming and heartrending, plays straight with the audience - all the clues to spotting the murderer are all there, if you are not having too much fun to look for them - with some seriously good characterful sheep, and the CGI that manufactured them. Most internet reviewers seem surprised they enjoyed it so much. I also went with no expectation, just to see my favourite actor. But then I should have known better - the director also does Minions.

  3. Now that's a film I know I'd enjoy. I do like a good whodunnit, and with sheep looking for the culprit...
I'm taking heart from the fact that you're getting out and about. Following Doctor's orders. Good on you, John. Onwards and upwards! xx

    1. I think the kids in the cinema liked it , one was crying dreadfully at the sad bits but we all did that at Bambi

    2. I had to take our older son out of the theater when the hunters started shooting in the forest in the Bambi movie. He was about 4 years old and too upset to stay.

The book was fun (Three Bags Full). We had a smallflock of sheep. When you only have a few, you learn some of them do have personalities.

  13. Wasn't your choir in fine form! It;s so obvious that they enjoy what they're doing. We, in our 'old age' don't do films with violence, sexual shennanagens , plain nastiness. or American drivel , so we're quite limited in our choice! The Sheep Detectives suited us just fine! We must take the grandchildren to it. Some of it will go right over Miss 8's head, but switched on Mr 11 will enjoy it and get some of the deeper messages. I do hope you're feeling chirpier, dear man.

  15. If anyone were to murder Huge Ackman in real life (and in the U.K.) - God forbid! - I'd join the campaign for reinstatement of the death penalty! Some things are just totally impossible to forgive.

And 'The Brave Little Toaster' did it for small appliances. Delightful and thought provoking. The novella was better than the movie. Kris in Ohio
