Cross The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with a bog standard Midsummer Murders and bingo you will have The Thursday Murder Club
The film is bland, but fun, predictable and amusing and it’s a lovely afternoon film to enjoy with a friend .
The plot is no more convoluted than a teatime Agatha Christie ,but we are introduced to four unlikely residents of an upmarket stately home sized retirement complex who have banded together to form a club which solves old cold cases “stolen” from the Met.
Leader Elizabeth ( Helen Mirren) is a former director of MI5, Ron ( Pierce Brosnan) an unlikely cockney trade unionist.Joyce ( Celia Imrie) a retired nurse and Ibramin ( Ben Kingsley) a psychiatrist , all look like they have great fun solving the crimes with all of the gusto of the kids from Scooby do
Mirren, especially looks like she’s have a ball as she parodies not only her Prime Suspect tv days but her role in The Queen. She’s very good in this, as is Kingsley, and Imrie, and her scenes with her husband ( jonathon Pryce) who is suffering from dementia, has a sweetness to them which is incredibly moving .
Thin, escapist movie making certainly
But it’s a fun and somewhat charming tv movie.
Well worth a visit
Not my cup of tea and definitely off my list. You're welcome to such tripe John.
ReplyDeleteDon’t diss it, sometimes beans on toast fills the tum
DeleteReminds me of "Only Murders in the Building" which I quite enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteYes it’s similar
DeleteI read the book, and thought it was sort of OK. A bit lightweight, but sometimes that's what you want - a bit of fluff. xx
ReplyDeleteLightweight , that’s the word I was searching for , mirren lends more weight a wise bit of casting
DeleteBefore Mirren was cast in this didn't Osman insist that he'd only agree to the film being made if she, and only she, played the character which she eventually did?
DeleteIt’s going to be on Prime starting tomorrow. Looking forward to watching it.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you think
DeletePlan to watch this on Saturday evening. Husband is a life-long Helen Mirren fan.
ReplyDeleteShe’s bloody amazing for 80
DeleteI hate tv murder shows
ReplyDeleteThey push me to cocktails and self loathing lol
Lee
Oh dear lol
DeleteI enjoyed the book and read it just a few weeks ago so will look for it on Prime. Ta for the review, John, I had no idea it had been made into a movie!
ReplyDeleteNow if they'll make Elly Griffiths' Ruth Galloway books (forensic anthropologist who assists the police) into a series, that would be choice! Good in book form, too.
Hugs!
You are right about Ruth Galloway…why on earth hasn’t that series been picked up!
DeleteI agree x
DeleteI agree too - love the Ruth Galloway books
DeleteWendy (Wales)
I agree also - I enjoyed the Ruth Galloway books and hope for a series.
DeletePierce Brosnan? Hellen Mirren?
ReplyDeleteI'm in. I love me some murder mysteries, also. So yes.
XOXO
Enjoyx
DeleteSounds delightfully frothy and fun. It starts streaming this weekend on Netflix and I intend to watch it!
ReplyDeleteIt’s simple fair
DeleteSomething that is not much more than a riddle is just what's needed sometimes. There's a place for heavy, emotional drama, and a place for when you need something light. I'll watch it when it eventually gets to TV.
ReplyDeleteGood idea x
DeleteI was so hoping it was going to be good... i love all those actors... Hugs! deb
ReplyDeleteIt’s froth
DeleteHave you read the books? I found the plot in the first one, which I assume this film is based on, rather weak. They improve over the series. By unlikely do you mean PB is unbelievable in the role or that it is a role you wouldn't imagine for him? After seeing him in The Tailor of Panama I feel he has a lot more to offer.
ReplyDeleteA new release of pensioner porn to watch. I'll give it a crack.
ReplyDeleteI recently watched an interview with Helen Mirren. I had no idea she has lived in America for several decades. She is amazing. I am looking forward to watching The Thursday Murder Club. I enjoyed the books.
ReplyDeleteI presume there are also plenty of old Bentley's, quaint village pubs, eccentric old peasants, beautiful landscapes, and of course a batty village vicar. That's what we love!
ReplyDeleteBeen looking forward to this coming out on Prime and am happy to enjoy a light hearted film. It sounds exactly what I am hoping for and I like the actors very much too.
ReplyDeleteI did read the book and can quite imagine that particular cast making a good job of those characters. Sounds like a pleasant way to pass an hour or so with no horror or violence.
ReplyDeleteI love Osman's books, all a lovely mix of fun and seriousness with some important themes coming in, like problems of aging, dementia, the loss of importance that goes with retirement. But there are many running jokes, too. I didn't know there was a movie out. I must look for it.

ReplyDeleteGentle English murders are just the ticket. Too much blood and gore sours the senses.,
ReplyDeleteI’m looking froward to watching it. I enjoyed the books.
