Giselle is a ballet that only succeeds because of the quality of its wilis ( pronounced willies)
The first act is a so-so bit of storytelling, with Giselle falling for a betrothed duke and dying from a weak heart and an insane mind, but only in the second act do things ramp up a notch with the ghost of Giselle joining the forest ghosts of spurned virgins who have died before marriage, namely the Wilis.
The power of the second act is the way that the corps de ballet ( maybe 30 women) dance as one entity
And the National Ballet of Japan had precision in bucket loads
They were breathtaking and all rather menacing
I almost laughed when two Wilis hurled the huntsman into the river to drown, such was the gasp from the audience.
They were two Wilis that could hold their own in a pub fight
I’m on the 5 pm train home
Happy that I made the effort to go to London for the day
So glad you had such a wonderful time! Wishing you a lovely evening at the cottage with Mary, Roger, Bun & Weaver. 🥰
ReplyDeleteI’m home now
DeleteI can visualise your smile from here! So glad the day out was a success. xx
ReplyDeleteI hope you could visualise my tears when the Wilis encircled the huntsman in the most perfect circle
DeleteJust the right sort of day stolen out of time and doing something completely different. Just what you needed. Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteI would have preferred to have had someone with me but I loved it
DeleteThose two Valkyrie-like Wilis sound like my kinda gals! Glad you had a good time on your getaway.
ReplyDeleteIt was good to be back in the opera house
DeletePrecision in bucket loads!! Great technical term. You were so right to go, and enjoy the performance, a break from the daily.
ReplyDeleteYes, it blew the cobwebs right away
DeleteHmmm .. I wonder why those scary Wilis were spurned?
ReplyDeleteWe shall never know
DeleteThe more I know you John, the more I like you. In the middle of all this crap, you like yourself enough to see a bit of beauty along the way. I would don my onesie and go to bed with a box of twinkies
ReplyDeleteYou go to the Royal Opera ballet
Lee x
I’ve considered your option xx
DeleteJohn, thank you for explaining Giselle. I saw it in about 2nd grade and had no earthly idea what was going on!!! Glad you went, and I hope tomorrow is a great day!
DeleteTake good care, Carol in Atlanta
Scarlett found it another day
DeleteI have never been to the ballet or opera. Plenty of musicals, concerts, and serious theatre, but that's it. Your enthusiasm makes me regret it.
ReplyDeleteIf you see a ballet pick either, swan lake, Giselle or Don Quixote
DeleteI love your description!
