Bank holiday Monday I went to the cinema
I went to see the oddity Sinners by Ryan Coogler. A film which , I understand resonates with black audiences in America, in a similar way Black Panther did.
I liked it even though it was two distinct films
One, an historical look at the roots of 1920s Black music and culture in rural Mississippi
And one bonkers vampire movie.
Obviously based on Quentin Tarintino’s From Dusk From Dawn , we follow the tale of twins Smoke and Stack ( Both played with gusto by Michael B Jordan) and their wish to build a nightclub in the middle of the cotton fields. They recruit a motley group to help them and the opening night arrives with so much attention to detail that the audience is caught up with the sheer power of the mise en sence of the time and place.
As the singers and dancers strum and sing and tap dance, one pivotal scene changes this historical study into a nightmarish horror second half and that is a magical appearance of modern day rappers, street dancers and ancient African and even Irish folk dancers who appear on the dance floor .
The vampires have arrived and they are not only killers but musical loving ones who use music to charm and feed.
It’s bonkers
Bit it works
The final half hour is pure 30 Days Of Night with our heroes battling the vampires with stakes and garlic water and fire.
I loved one buxom , sexy resourceful black character called Annie ( Wunmi Mosaku below)great to see a hero with curves and brains for a change
I’ve get down to my paperwork today( I’m in the middle of it )
This evening I’m going to my sister’s home for supper
It’s nice to be pampered
My arm isn’t any better
I'll give it a miss, thanks! Not into vampires. Get that paper work done, then you can relax. Sorry the arm is still playing up. Hopefully you'll start to get some answers soon. xx
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed , I’m glad I’ve been at home today we had another problem with the electricity , a power cut all day
DeleteWe have watched a couple of movies on the ship this week, old ones, Guilt Trip and Cocaine Bear. Bear is a dark comedy, a bit of blood and gore, but funny. We arrived in Portland England this morning.
ReplyDeleteYou are such a globe trotter , I’ve loved the photos, with you. Looking very Kate winglet on deck
DeleteNot my sort of film at all! I am sorry to hear that your arm is still causing you problems. I hope that they can find a reason very soon. Enjoy being pampered by your sister. All the best to you, Carole R.
ReplyDeleteIt was a real treat to have a meal made for me
DeleteThe cinema would have had to pay me to watch "Sinners". Besides, I can see sinners any time. Just walk down the street and there they are. Luckily, Jesus died for our sins so I guess we don't need to worry any more.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn’t my sort of film to be honest but I kind of enjoyed it
DeleteYou had me until the zombies. Just not a subject matter I can connect with. Any more info about your arm other than the fact that it’s no better. I’ve been thinking about you.
ReplyDeleteWhO mentioned zombies
DeleteSorry! I meant vampires.
Deletethe film sounds like it was made for you
ReplyDeleteNow if there was zombies that WOULD BEME
DeleteYou seem to enjoy weird movies, so go for it, just definitely not for me. Take all the pampering on offer and I hope you start to get answers soon re: arm. Hugs, Gigi
ReplyDeleteWatch this space💪🏼
DeleteThat sounds so wacky I am almost tempted to go and see it. Wunmi Mosaku is a brilliant actress, I first came across her in Vera. She was raised in Manchester so she's bound to be special. ;-)
ReplyDeleteHer American accent is striking
DeleteOhh yes!
ReplyDeleteEVERYBODY is talking here about this movie. Going to see it this weekend!
Also, Michael B. Jordan is pretty.
XOXO
He gave the film his all TWICE
DeleteI enjoyed both of those films you mentioned, (and was a fan of 70's Hammer Horror films back in the day.) This sounds interesting, though I'm not sure about the rappers and tap dancers!
ReplyDeleteJean.
That bit was quite magical
DeleteMy son saw that movie last week and said it was weird but good. Probably not for me, tho. Hope you get some answers on your arm soon, John. xo
ReplyDelete💪🏼🙏
DeleteYour description makes me want to take the day off and go see it.
ReplyDeletePamper yourself bob
DeleteMight there be a possibility your arm problem is caused by a pinched nerve (neuropathy) as opposed to a neurological problem? That would be more easily corrected with physical therapy. Or has that been ruled out already and I missed it?
ReplyDeleteYes, it’s crossed my mind, the doctor is working through things systematically but as I’m getting some hypersensitivity around my jaw, I suspect you maybe right.
Delete'The film sounds interesting,' she said, politely.
ReplyDeleteBut not for you
DeleteI had very bad arm pain for nearly two months. Rotator cuff, leading to pinched nerves, pain from collarbone to hand. Painful when driving and woke me up at night if I slept on it. Physio and following physio's exercises helped as did planks and downward dog exercises to build up the muscle. I know six people with the same complaint which is often caused by lifting heavy objects and weights. I hope you recover soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you anon , I have a physio review pending
DeleteI have a certain affection for bonkers movies. I'll have to watch it.
ReplyDeleteI await your review

ReplyDeleteIt’s an oddity for sure and uneven s hell, but it’s striking
DeleteEnjoy the evening with your sister & family! Sorry to hear your arm hasn't improved. Stay safe, John dear.
ReplyDeleteWE had lamb stew, it was a bloody treat
DeleteANd no pudding x
Glad you enjoyed the movie, but I, too, will give it a miss. No zombies or vampires for me. "Interview with a Vampire" from long ago filled my lifetime need for that stuff!
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful sisters you have!
Sorry the weakness remains. What does your doctor say? MRI asap or what?
Wishing you WELL!
Hugs!
I’m seeing him next Wednesday
DeleteSorry to hear your arm hasn’t improved. Thank you for the eloquently written movie review. As a fellow walking dead tragic 😂 I’ll watch it 🙂. I really hope you get some answers soon as to what’s going on with your arm it must be quite scary to have an essential bit of your body not working properly xx
ReplyDeleteIm having more neurological symptoms and will book another medical review
DeleteVery wise of you!
DeleteHugs!
Hope your arm ipmproves and you get some answers . As someone who hides behind the sofa during a Dracula film a horror movie is not . My Irish imagination can’t cope !! X Bernie

ReplyDeleteIts an alternative remake
DeleteEnjoy my friend
DeleteHow funny, my daughter texted me from the movie theatre last night; I've invited her for dinner Sunday, and she was watching "Sinners" with some mates. I thought it was going to be along the lines of a Dan Brown film, I should of guessed it would be whacky, just what Sarah loves.
ReplyDeleteDan brown is IN at the moment with the pope stuff
DeleteThis movie seems odd/weird and not for me.
ReplyDeleteYour meal with family on Monday sounds excellent. Meals at Janet's house are always enjoyed.
Have you been driving a lot and have the arm in an awkward position/stick shifting/sitting on the couch differently with it propped or bent on something hard anything that could pinch a nerve or has your back been hurting? Beth
ReplyDeleteHugs
