Wicked

I’ve never really liked fantasy musicals
Willie Wonka, The Wizard Of Oz, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, all leave me somewhat cold and bored, so I was surprised that Wicked held my attention for so long.
I had seen the original musical in San Francisco , and had forgotten it shortly afterwards so the film seemed ill fated and probably ill advised, but as it was organised as a post Christmas treat with my friend Ruth, ( with a spicy burrito to follow) I thought What the fuck ? Why not?

Elfaba ( Cynthia Erivo) was born to play the lead wicked witch as she conveys every single emotion with a close up single look. She is the film and she is amazing in it. Grande too is impressive as her foil and friend G’linda but everyone’s eyes are on Erivo’s green face which when silently weeping, clearly sets the audience off.
The film itself was so so but the scenes between the two witches are touching real and wonderfully observed.

  5. So, you recommend seeing the film for the scenes between the two witches. They must be really something.

Will watch for it streaming in months ahead. I always enjoy you movie reviews.
I'd have liked to have joined you and Ruth for those burritos!

    Hugs!

  8. I saw it was 2 hours and 45 minutes long. I just can't do that in one sitting even with a bathroom break.

  9. It's coming to the states (not sure about elsewhere) on New Year's Eve for rent and to buy. We have been waiting but we're going to splurge for NYE to watch it with a glass of bubbly. Can't wait!!

  10. Haven't seen the film but saw the stage performance in the West End and was thoroughly disappointed. The only good bit for me is Defying Gravity at the end of the first half. I find most musicals { with a few exceptions } a vehicle for songs built around a very weak story. XXXX

  11. I've seen the play and do want to see the movie. My daughter tells me Cynthia E. is very problematic for comments she's made; I'm not sure what that is about (but I'm still going to see the movie).

I hated it. Too much AI generated stuff in films these days and it shows. Ok for some things but we need a return to real acting.

  13. I haven't felt the need to see it because I saw the show on Broadway years ago. But who knows? Maybe at some point.

  14. I enjoyed it and thought the music was great! The list of credits of all of the people involved was amazing to me. Hundreds of dancers and singers and musicians, etc, etc. It really is a huge effort with lots of talent. I hadn't been to a movie in probably 12 years and the theater was so comfy!
