Bake Off

Some years had Bake Off breaking its neck to be as inclusive to every Tom, dick and Harriet and so this year feels a little different. Ok with a few cultural differences, such as a Dutch gay man who has the oddest English accent since Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins and a powerfully built Valkyrie from the Czech Republic who looks as though she could hold her own in a pub fight, we have a gaggle of cheerful Gays, a sweet Asian schoolgirl , a comical cockney lad and a couple of ordinary looking lasses from Wales and Lancashire.
The thing that remains wholesome about Bake Off are the contestants, who are generally shown to be pretty nice people. That’s the strength of the entire programme. Of course the Welsh woman had to have a chicken called Fanny around which she designed her first showstopper , freeing Alison Hammond to call out gleefully How Does Fanny Taste ? One of a whole plethora of double entendres we will be subjected to,no doubt this year.

Ps….I spoke to Weaver’s son today at his request, and was happy to help with some practical issues. She remains with us , but is incredibly frail, as you would expect.
I will keep you posted.

I enjoy Bake Off immensely, for me it's one of those feel good shows that make the inexorable slide down to colder , shorter days bearable.
I won't be the only one who'll be glad to know that Weaver's son felt able to reach out to you at this time.

  6. My favourites so far are Illiyin, Mike and Sumayah (that duck was fantastic). I get the feeling Mike is either related to, or a fan of, Stephen Fry (his top book/cake was called Mythos - a book by SF).
Thank you for the Weaver up date.

Sadly I can never really get to see the Bake off in it's entirety here, I work odd hours and seem to always miss one or two episodes. Also thinking of Weaver; very sad and difficult time for her family but I'm glad her son reached out to you for practical advise.

Pat has been tucked in my sleeve for many weeks now. I’m hoping for a peaceful exit from the landing. Thank you, again, for letting us know the update.

The Great Canadian Baking Show is our equivalent of Bake Off. I love the early seasons hosted by Dan Levy and Julia Chan, and the judges Bruno and Rochelle. Bruno is just so..lovely in his particularity. If you haven’t seen it, John, give it a go. So wholesome and so, so funny.

  26. I have become a little tired of Bake Off. I haven't watched it for a few years, it always seems much the same; but with different faces.

  27. I love Bake Off. It follows the same format year after year, it's ordinary people who participate, some of whom I wonder how on earth they got selected, but hey, who am I to judge, except from the comfort of my armchair. Secretly wishing that I could bake half as well as some of them. Long may it continue.

I have never seen Bake Off, living in Perth (Australia). But since you mention their attempt at inclusivity, I want to say this. I'm a fan of all the British detective programmes, but their desire for political correctness results in an unbelievable number of disabled people and black people in high-up positions. This comment makes me sound racist. I'm not. It's simply that this overwhelming inclusivity detracts from the reality of the programmes.

I love your bake off, although we have to wait to see it in NZ . Our local version is a horrid version, all serious and cheesy at the same time.
Gentle thoughts of Weaver and her family.
