I don’t speak to my neighbours to the rear of my cottage.
It started over me complaining of noise not long after they moved in and I’ve made no attempt at reconciling
Yesterday I found myself sitting in Bluebell charging my phone. Only my portable charger seemed to be working and I needed the phone to call my prospective supervisor before I left for work
So there I sat waiting for the phone to charge, where I lost myself in day dreaming and thought. I realised it was The Prof’s birthday and emailed him a happy birthday note on impulse.
, all the while I was sat there Roger watched me from inside the gate, wanting to get near me. Somehow in the next few minutes he managed to scramble over the wall into next doors garden and managed to run around and through a few gardens and tried to enter my neighbours house from the rear, sending their gaggle of dogs in an absolute frenzy of yapping.
Oblivious to this I continued to sit in Bluebell watching my phone. That was until the lady of the house appeared in a dressing gown holding a truly repentant Roger in her arms. Is he Yours? She called cheerfully.
Roger was terribly frightened, not only by his brief break out into the unknown but by the fact a total stranger had picked him up. He trembled noticeably and buried his head into my armpit .
A real baby
I took him from my neighbour and thanked her for returning him. It was a little embarrassing but perhaps it’s time to cease hostilities, I thought, grateful he hadn’t ran across the fields towards the sheep.
We sat in Bluebell together as I phoned my supervisor .
Roger meekly curled up on my knee
His shaking stopped.
Oh dear, poor little guy, how heart rending. But maybe this will break the tension with the neighbor, that would be a positive too. Hopefully Roger was frightened enough to STAY HOME next time!

Lol yes stay home
DeleteSounds like Roger learned his lesson?
ReplyDeleteUnlike bulldogs , and although they sit and watch watch, terriers very much just react to stimuli
DeleteOh Roger!!! Glad his little adventure ended well, and perhaps he has learned a lesson. Although one can't be sure until the next time he breaks out.
ReplyDeleteIf I’m in the house he won’t go far, it was because I’d sat in the car
DeleteYou can always count on a dog to break the ice.
ReplyDeleteWith that face?
DeleteDear Roger, what a sweetie, needing comfort after his big adventure. I hope the relationship with those neighbours continues to improve.
ReplyDeleteOh, poor Roger! All he wanted was to be with his Dad. Well, it seems the ice has been broken with your neighbour. Let's hope the thaw continues. xx
ReplyDeleteSuch a relief, for both of you. He must have been so frightened. It's hard to stay on poor terms with an immediate neighbour when it can be better to try to tolerate each other. I have a similar situation and hope things can improve now for you with them. The fact that she was cheerful and had your sweet boy in her arms is good.
ReplyDeleteAgreed
DeleteRoger the peacemaker.
ReplyDeleteWith that face x
DeletePoor Roger, how scary for him. Does that mean you will have to build higher walls?
ReplyDeleteNo I just moved a garden seat
DeleteMaybe Roger and other cuties like him will be able to bring peace to the world...
ReplyDeleteNicely put Yael , I always think that if women ruled nations
DeleteYep. I am still in love with Roger.
ReplyDeleteThe world seems to be
DeleteRoger needs your comforting company so desperately he'll do ANYTHING to get it. You are clearly a necessary and reassuring presence, which I don't doubt, you've already recognised.
ReplyDeleteRoger is a monkey isn't he - Can you place a barrier in front if not above - Seems he has those naughty boy legs - It was good of her though wasn't it x
ReplyDeleteI’ve moved his escape route, a garden chair
DeleteOf all people to give advice...flis who doesn't control her dogs when out.
DeleteThat was very good of your neighbor to handle the situation the way she did. Let there be peace. Jackie
ReplyDeleteAmen
DeleteI left my doggie at the Vets last week to get dental, she needs some teeth removed, and by the time that they were going to start the surgery, she was in a state and her heart was racing, so they wouldn’t do it. She just can’t stand being without me right beside her. I go back in two weeks to get her heart checked with me with her. Now I am having anxiety for the first time in many years. Poor Rodger got quite a fright, but now you know the neighbour is a good person, worthy of your friendship. Gigi
ReplyDeleteOh Roger loves everyone, but only when he’s home with me, or out with me, if he’s out of his normal environment , he’s terribly shy
DeleteThat was kind of your noisy neighbour. Perhaps you should pop a "thank you" or "sorry" card through her letter box - just to make better relations.
ReplyDeleteI’ll do just that when I go to work
DeleteWho would be able to resist Roger? I'm glad the neighbour was kind to him and friendly to you - all good x
ReplyDeleteAlison in Wales x
Yes all better
DeleteOh, poor Roger, greatly regretting his moment of freedom! So very kind of your neighbor to scoop him up, and bring him to you. Maybe time has dampened the flames for you and the neighbor and a détente can be had.
ReplyDeleteI describe Roger as dim, he’s more, well , he has learning difficulties,
DeleteHe’s not totally house trained even at three and he misses social cues with other dogs sometimes, over pushing boundaries
My terrier now about 7 wees and poos indoors at night. - Usually and gratefully on strategically placed towels and plastic sheeting - hallway, outside bathroom door , inside the bathroom or on the landing - He is still traumatised by his past life living outside possibly x
DeleteAww, sweet Roger. You are the best kind of dad for a special needs doggo! Your animals have won the lottery with you, John!
DeleteRoger's escape adventure got the best of him. It turned out scary. I agree, the woman returning Roger sounds like a mutual dog lover and has to be a good woman. A little peace offering/thank you gift would be a nice touch.
ReplyDeleteAgreed
DeleteGlad that Roger was returned safe and sound.
ReplyDeleteI do worry about him, more than any other dog I’ve owned
DeleteA good opening to make friends..well done Roger
ReplyDeleteI will try to be a better person and acknowledge my neighbours , gawd john we are a long time dead arnt we?
DeleteThis triggered a very early memory of mine. My mother had gone to the next door neighbor's for just a minute, I suppose, when I was little. After what seemed like a long time but probably wasn't, I panicked, just as Roger did. I know just how he felt.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a horrid feeling, an ice cold fear of loss
DeleteOn the arrival of a new Jug puppy, I went and cut all the bushes at the bottom of the garden and noticed the fence was ropey.
ReplyDeleteThe bottom of my garden being the side of that neighbours
I found the right house and explained to the older lady living there that I was getting new fence put up at my expense, because I didn't want my dog escaping.
To which she said 'Oh the little brown one, it keeps popping through a little hole to have a look at me. It's very nice'
I was so shocked and was grovelling an apology or two. She said 'I wouldn't hurt him'
Couldn't get the new fence up fast enough
Lol funny…somehow some dogs just feel more helpless than others, and Roger, despite being an adult remains very much like a puppy
DeleteA dog with learning difficulties perhaps
Sweet, dim, timid Roger. So glad the story ended well.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend.
Poor Roger. I am so glad it ended well.
ReplyDeletePeacemakers come in all shapes and sizes! I'm glad you and Roger were reunited and agree, it might be time for hostilities to ceace.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
I am glad all ended well for Roger. Dogs do have a way of bringing people together, so maybe this is an opening for you and your neighbor. Give Roger a pat for me!
ReplyDeleteOh poor Roger; thank goodness your neighbour is friendly and scooped him up. I can imagine the look of shock and indignation on his face though.... but glad it thawed the ice. Being offside with close neighbours makes for a tricky neighbourhood.
ReplyDeleteHa! My husband left the field gate open one night and of course the horses were out. They were over at our neighbors who I don’t go out of my way to speak to…I told him he could go retrieve them as he let them out, but of course they wouldn’t let him catch them and I had to go over anyway…( she loves tRump and guns, both things I abhor)
