Good Friday

I’m not a lover of Easter.
It feels what it is, a now defunct holiday with no purpose or reason.
The supermarket was packed today, which told me enough
Just an excuse to waste money.

Having said that, I bought some chocolate eggs for the work staff . I am on nights tomorrow and Sunday, and felt I wanted to treat those on duty. It’s not that long ago, that I bought eggs to hide in the garden for my mother -in-law to find. It is her birthday over Easter and it was always a silly tradition I used to stage for her.
I doubt she would remember it now.

I bought flowers for the cottage and pigs ears for the Welsh, and some noodle ready meals to use over the weekend, and I’ve washed clothes and underwear which are festooned over the bushes and back kitchen walls to dry. I’ve messaged my friend Ben in Korea and spoke to Nu.
Easter is usually a quiet weekend.

I’ve been invited to Gwawr’s 40th at the hall and will pop there later after I go to the theatre.

  1. Festooned over the bushes and walls? Have you not heard of two new-fangled inventions for drying clothes? The washing line and the rotary washing line?

When I was young our neighbour put his underwear on the hedge to dry, my mother said we shouldn't speak to him as he was a "dirty old man" and a"perv"

  2. Unless you hold religious beliefs then Easter nowadays seems to just be about eating lots of chocolate and buying egg and rabbit related "stuff".
As I am currently on a diet, I am ignoring Easter...

    1. Well from a personal point of view it IS a defunct holiday ….what are you doing here anyway? Shouldn’t you be in church?

  6. Well, and I forgot it was Good Friday.
I like spring break cause I don't have to work. Yay.

  7. Yes, unless you are Christian, Easter, like Christmas is just an excuse to spend money on stuff you don't need/want. I'm sure your coworkers will appreciate the choccy eggs. I'm betting they don't last long! xx

  8. Just remember that this time was a celebration long before christianity. And many other beliefs celebrate around the same times throughout the year.

A birthday celebration sounds a good way to round off the day.

Indeed, it is the ancient time of celebrating Spring, the equinox, etc., just hijacked by religious nonsense in the same way as the Solstice was hijacked in December. Enjoy and celebrate the arrival of Spring, because at least it is true, unlike other nonsense, I suggest.

  9. Easter is passing me by this year in a blur of hospital discharge and care packages for my Mum. I need to squeeze in some chocolate somewhere. I hope you have a good Easter even if it does feel defunct. 🙂

It is ironic that in my neck of the woods, the Churches are packed at Xmas, but not at Easter.

The thing I like about both holidays is Tesco has half price salmon and lamb. Good to stock up the freezer.

I also find the “thoughts” on Thought for the Day quite thought provoking.

  12. Like many religious holidays, it's more about family and friends these days, and less about religion. Which is fine as far as I'm concerned!

As a child, it was a new Easter dress , cotton gloves (very small!), and an Easter basket. Also doleful songs at church, until the end of the service.

My Grandma Hall used to say "Don't be so heavenly minded that you're no earthly good!" Amen to that.

Chocolate makes everthing just a bit better.

    Hugs!

The stores are all closed here for Good Friday so no shopping for me, but I did go yesterday and buy myself a package of 4 chocolate bunnies. I only have one left, don’t know how that happened. I am so bored today that I got all my income tax stuff ready for the accountant and got caught up on the bills. I have made an appointment to get my car serviced and took my dog to get groomed yesterday. When you get busy, it makes me also think about what needs to get done around here, so thank you John. Enjoy your day. Gigi

Well true confessions, I’ve eaten some of the eggs I bought for family, so will have to beat a path to the shops today. I love Easter because it signals the end of the hot weather here. Autumn is in the air and it’s beautiful. I guess spring is in the air for you John xx

  19. Your daffodils are so beautiful. They seem to be a pink or coral variety. Your weekend sounds fun but you seem a bit low, I hope things cheer up soon. Truly a plate of hot pad thai would make me very happy.
Perhaps you could do an egg hunt for the terriers. I saw it on IG. Just put doggy treats in the plastic eggs.
I am going with friends to a large flower show exhibition instead of anyone doing Easter dinner. Lovely day out.
What were Easters like when you were a child? Good or bad or mixed?

  22. For me Easter is all about the festive dinner. I'm cooking ham for family and friends. The sandwiches on crusty or dark rye will be enjoyed for a few days.

  23. We shall have our daughter over for a ham dinner on Sunday but since we're all non-believers, that will be it.

  24. I agree with you, it's a non-event for us too. I shall have family here for supper tomorrow evening (Poussin I think), and will no doubt eat a small chocolate egg.

We always had to switch from winter dresses to summer cotton dresses at Easter. Also knee socks to ankle socks and dark cardigan to white cardigan. Even if it was snowing. I always froze through Spring as a child.

  26. "Festooned" is a great word! I don't often hear or read it now.

Easter for me means the year changing to the coming of new life and light and hopefully leaving behind the dark hibernation time. It helps if there is a beautiful sunny day at the weekend too.

  27. Happy Easter, nonetheless! We aren't religious and don't celebrate either. I do enjoy some good coconut candy though. (I sneak out on Monday for the little speckled Cadbury eggs with the hard shell. They hide in the cabinet for chocolate emergencies.) My man's sister has 3 adult kids and usually hosts. She is kind enough to invite us, otherwise we'd be home painting or sanding something.

    Loving on your crab bowl!

  28. We're going to our son and his family for our 'Easter meal' today.
Tomorrow we'll be staying home, if the weather's good, we'll potter in the garden, but if it's inclement, we'll put our feet up, read, relax, and possibly snooze!

  30. My dog Murphy passed away on Easter. It was terrible, for so many reasons. This is my first "holiday" alone, all the kids have moved away. The dogs and I will keep busy in some way.
