I’ve seen this before and it always moves me, and makes me think of people I was close to in the past. This article about Marina and Ulay is interesting. https://amp.theguardian.com/travel/2020/apr/25/marina-abramovic-ulay-walk-the-great-wall-of-china
I don't remember this clip but I did see quite a long programme about the whole event - people were queuing for hours to take part. Abramovic's concentration and focus was amazing, and many participants were leaving in tears. Very moving.
I think this was taken from the 2010 MoMAThe Artist is Present (so New York). The Great Wall of China walk was in 1988. There's lots of info on their story online.
Ann and anon I think you have to remember the surroundings The limited time of the interaction with each person, the watching crowd , the whole ambiance puts huge stressors on the “ performers” no wonder many of those that took part cried themselves
No I didn’t mean the meeting was set up, I was under the impression that it wasn’t ….I thought the set up generally was clever, it was always going to move someone
Oh my goodness, I didn't know what to expect and then suddenly the tears were running down my face. I can't believe so much emotion can pass in silence.
I can always rely on you to find something interesting to post. Haven’t seen this before and it touched me…don’t care if it was staged or not, the message came through.
Also meant to say it is good yiur blog is no longer “sanitized”
Hauntingly and breathtakingly beautiful. The regret seen on his face and the emotion from her so utterly compelling yet heartbreakingly sad. This will stay with me for a very long time.
Interesting.... "Ulay-oh..." Is it an advert for Oil of Ulay?
ReplyDeleteNo …it was her exes name
DeleteWow! So emotional. xx
ReplyDeleteIt’s powerful for sure x
DeleteSo touching - am weeping .
ReplyDeleteYes I did too….there is something visceral about it
DeleteI wasn't expecting that when I sat down with a cuppa - I have tears on my cheeks - So very beautiful x💗
ReplyDeleteyou're back, have you been on holiday?
DeleteWe do miss our regulars
DeleteWhy did they put music over the 'moment of silence?'.
ReplyDeleteI guess it was their moment of silence
DeleteIt strikes me anew what a precious gift our undivided attention is. It strikes me again that it is a gift that I should give more often.
ReplyDeleteThis clip made me cry.
Well said…..sometimes we fear and tend to fill silences and forget to ATTEND to the person in front of us…
DeleteJust beautiful. There is nothing more I can say.
ReplyDeleteI understand your phrase , very well
DeletePowerful.
ReplyDeleteI found that the distance the chairs had been placed made their bodies exaggerate their reach for each other
DeleteTears here, too. Love is a timeless connection.
ReplyDeleteHugs ...
Wow!
ReplyDeleteYes…it took my breath away the first time I experienced it
DeleteI’ve seen this before and it always moves me, and makes me think of people I was close to in the past. This article about Marina and Ulay is interesting.

Thank you for that follow up…I wondered the significance
DeleteI don't remember this clip but I did see quite a long programme about the whole event - people were queuing for hours to take part. Abramovic's concentration and focus was amazing, and many participants were leaving in tears. Very moving.
ReplyDeleteYes I read of this when I weren’t to the museum last. Her exhibition was one of the most popular ever
DeleteI saw this some years ago and I think it moved me more than I realized. It still does.
ReplyDeleteIt’s haunting , isn’t it?
DeleteDamn! That was deep.
ReplyDeleteConceptual art that actually moved me
DeleteTo have someone 'see' you is very moving indeed. I wonder if they saw each other again after that?
ReplyDeleteApparantly not,
DeleteTwo highly strung artists perhaps? But after 30 years I would have thought that most of us would have been terribly moved
DeleteThis was powerful. It says they were together in the 70's, when was this film made and how long was it since they'd last seen each other?
ReplyDeleteI think this was taken from the 2010 MoMAThe Artist is Present (so New York). The Great Wall of China walk was in 1988. There's lots of info on their story online.
DeleteThanks Veg Artist, I'll read more about it.
DeleteI only read a little but it was sad. They didn't get back together and ended up in court about the ownershp of shared artworks.
DeleteUlay died in 2020.
Veg artist, yes I too have been following their story
DeleteThough I’m not surprised that they remained apart
Ann and anon
DeleteI think you have to remember the surroundings
The limited time of the interaction with each person, the watching crowd , the whole ambiance puts huge stressors on the “ performers” no wonder many of those that took part cried themselves
A clever set up all round
DeleteIt was a set up then and not real? Oh well it shows what good actors they are. Had me and your readers fooled anyway.
DeleteNo I didn’t mean the meeting was set up, I was under the impression that it wasn’t ….I thought the set up generally was clever, it was always going to move someone
DeleteBeautiful x
ReplyDeleteThe power of non verbal communication
DeleteVery moving. Even for my icy heart x
ReplyDeleteIt is touching isn’t it mave….I’m glad I’m melting you
DeleteOh my goodness, I didn't know what to expect and then suddenly the tears were running down my face. I can't believe so much emotion can pass in silence.
ReplyDeleteIt sort of grabs you doesn’t it? And she’s a striking woman to look at
DeleteBeautiful - art at its purest.
ReplyDeleteI’m not an understander of conceptual art, but this moment and many of her encounters before this one fascinated me totally
DeleteSo moving
ReplyDeleteYes….in a visceral way
DeleteBeautiful and powerful. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteYou are welcome x

A photo of Albert is overdue, me thinks
He’s just been running around with Roger play fighting

ReplyDeleteI have read some cynical commentary on this piece but watching it, there's no way they are faking.
ReplyDeleteNo, but the pressure of the moment must have been immense
DeleteI remember this at the time. Very moving.
