I bought a second hand book online last week and it arrived yesterday. Paul Gallico’s The Snow Goose. The novella was written in the 1940’s and read by me when I was eleven back in 1973.
It haunted me then,
The visuals in my head of the snow goose circling the little boat in Dunkirk
I have not read it since although one of Gallico’s later novels The Poseidon Adventure is still one of my most favourite and perplexing reads.
Gallico’s seems to be haunting me a little for after seeing this trailer I’ve booked to see Mrs Harris Goes To Paris at the Storyhouse
It’s a gentle movie,I know I’d like
You'll really enjoy it John. Leslie Manville is amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe older she gets the better she is ….
DeleteI'm looking forward to that movie too. A touch of gentle is what we all need.
ReplyDeleteWhimsy
DeleteI love her face x👗
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the original starring Angela Landsbury. Am looking forward to seeing this new version.
ReplyDeleteGallico was always accused as being sentimental
DeleteI hope the movie will be
I think you are going to love the movie! Make sure you have a hanky with you!
ReplyDeleteI know you are right
DeleteSaw Mrs Harris when it first came out. Its cute and feel-good.
ReplyDeleteI also enjoyed "The Snow Goose" when I was young. It took you away from reality to a different realm.
ReplyDeleteLong ago I enjoyed The Poseidon Adventure movie and had no idea there were novels by the same author. I'll have to look for this new movie.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Mrs. Harris is a lovely movie, enjoyed very much. Read an illustrated version of the Snow Goose to my young daughter and cried my eyes out!
ReplyDeleteI think the uk release was delayed for some reason
DeletePoseidon adventure as a book taught me a whole lot about the craft of writing.
ReplyDeleteTina in west oz. Xxx
DeleteMe too
DeleteWhen I first saw the trailer for that movie I thought, "I want to see this." It looks to be so good.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a feel good movie I susoect
DeleteOh my, on Sunday morning when I was a kid, the NZBC had a radio programme of children's stories- the purpose I think was to give us something to do while our parents had a sleep in. One of the regular stories was a dramatisation of the snow goose and it haunted me too. Anything about death or dying did - so much so it became a real issue. BUT, it is undeniably a beautiful story, so beautifully written. BTW, tech help here because you mentioned not being able to comment - right click on the empty comment field, choose "this frame only", and the comment opens in a separate screen Doing it now.
ReplyDeleteIt’s a children’s story for adults
DeleteEXACTLY!!!
DeleteI love this book. I have it also. I never realized that he wrote Mrs Harris. Another of his stories that always haunted me was The Nine Lives of Thomasina.
ReplyDeleteHow about , Thomasina The Cat Who Thought She Was God.
DeleteHis subject matter seems strangely eclectic
DeleteI remember reading quite a few of his novels back in the day.
ReplyDeleteThank you for heads up re Mrs Harris Goes To Paris. I've brought it on Audible to listen to and then enjoy as a movie.
ReplyDeleteIf you appreciate cats another Gallico book you might like is The Abandoned.
ReplyDeleteLooking it up
DeleteI saw the trailer for that film yesterday and thought, that looks like my sort of film. I hadn't realised the story was written by Paul Gallico. xx
ReplyDeleteHad never heard of The Snow goose, John, but just looked the storyline up online and it made me cry! : ( will be ordering a copy today. Louise x
ReplyDeleteI should see Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. I’ve never read The Snow Goose, nor even Poseidon Adventure (and I don’t think I saw the film all the way through).
ReplyDeleteI want you to do both xx
DeleteCall yourself gay? I thought every gay man over 50 knows the Poseidon adventure off by heart
DeleteWho says I’m over 50?!? Anyway, I must have a much older Gay Manual.
DeleteI seem to remember a tv film of The Snow Goose with Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter. Possibly from the early 80s. I bought the book after watching it.
ReplyDelete1971 actually ..
DeleteSnow Goose is a wonderful book, like you I have been haunted by the ending. And Mrs. Harris....is a delightful film of that novel of his.
ReplyDeleteCheers
I am in need of a frothy and sweetly sentimental film MRS HARRIS will fit the bill nicely
DeleteI didn't know The Poseidon Adventure was a novel.. On my need to read list now.. So many hidden treasures in old books..
ReplyDeleteIt’s a hard read , much more gritty and bizarre than the film
