Dorothy swam in a river in Dyserth this evening in an effort to keep cool.
It was almost dark when she dived in with eyes closed
Mary stayed by my side , pursing her lips.
I haven’t been so proud since I attended my ex husbands doctorate graduation
She swam like a baby hippo, head held high, sharp doggy paddle, big smile on her face
And it totally made my week, if not my month when she struck out from the bank like a professional.
I never knew the daft old girl could do water like an otter
But she did and like a new dad , it made my day.
And I cried silly tears as she eventually made for shore.
Smiling like a loon
She’s now snoring loudly dripping the blue trendy sofa in water
Dear Dorothy, she continues to surprise. xx
ReplyDeleteShe’s does indeed
DeleteWhat a sweet post!
ReplyDeleteIt felt that yes
DeleteWell done, Dorothy! You know how to keep cool oin that kind of heat!! Proud Dad, did you get your toes wet?
ReplyDeleteHugs!
I was soaked lol
DeleteI have to agree that this is just a sweet post ... That Dorothy surprises us all! A real leap of faith into the deep end of the pool (sort of) ... love it!
ReplyDeleteI suddenly felt wrong footed by someone who knew better
DeleteWho would have known, she like the water. Stay cool and relax
ReplyDeleteI know!!!
DeleteI bet she feels proud as well.
ReplyDeleteShe looked suddenly so adult
DeleteI am proud of her from her. well done old thing.
ReplyDeleteMe too…my heart was busting
DeleteHurrah for the Big D! She's a wonder, that girl. I'm so glad you have her.
ReplyDeleteTo be wrong footed by her at this stage was so funny
DeleteIt is amazing that animals instinctively know how to swim, while we humans have to be taught.
ReplyDeleteAnd she looked so much like a pro
DeleteJust when we thought we all knew Dorothy, she surprises us with being a swimmer. She likes the water! You could consider buying her a kiddie pool. It would not be deep enough for a swim but she could lay down and cool off. My dog loves his kiddie pool on a hot day.
ReplyDeleteShe circled the pool lap after lap as I cried big tears …it felt like a movie scene
DeleteWhat a wonderful surprise! Well done old girl!
ReplyDeleteE
Indeed well done my girl
DeleteI loved this post :)
ReplyDeleteOh well done Dotty! What a milestone for her ...if you take her again you should film the movie star! Great post for a gloomy NZ day.
ReplyDeleteCan't comment as me again for some weird reason.
Jo in Auckland
Such a lovely story. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMisty eyed and lump in throat over here as well .. clever girl, well done!
ReplyDeleteDorothy knows "ya do what ya gotta do in a heat wave!"
ReplyDeleteDorothy is a Star- possibly Ava Gardner doppelganger x
ReplyDeleteI feel the emotions from reading this and your comments.
ReplyDeleteLove it. Perhaps if Mary sees it happen a few times, she'll follow suit. My old dog loved to swim. He had arthritis and swimming was such a good way for him to exercise without the weightbearing pain.
ReplyDeleteGreat new adventure Dorothy! Are Terriers particularly water-adverse, or might Mary try once she's watched Dorothy a couple of times?
ReplyDeleteProud Papa...I love Dorothy!
ReplyDeleteI live in Florida and have been known to turn on and stand under the hose to cool off. If Dorothy had thumbs, she could do the same.
( I'm 72 in Sept and still play in the hose )
Our Lab', Monty, was a great swimmer, the only problem was getting him out again!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful moment!
ReplyDeleteSweet girl!
ReplyDeleteshe's clearly not nervous in the water department
Now THAT’s a surprise! What a joy that must have been — to see and to do.
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWe adopted a feral cat a few years ago. He was terrified when he came to live with us. He is now a happy reasonably well adjusted cat. It is lovely to see how far he has come.
She must have LOVED that!
ReplyDeleteYou can't teach an old dog new tricks. They teach us!!
ReplyDeleteDorothy deserves her twenty metre certificate. You should also consider buying her a rubber swimming cap. goggles and a polka dot swimming suit.
ReplyDeleteOh Dorothy, you dear little thing! How lovely to read about her being confident enough to go for a swim. What a milestone and I can imagine how proud you were, John. You've done wonders with her.
ReplyDeleteI've always had rescue dogs and know that it is not always easy, though hugely rewarding when you see them blossom. People don’t generally talk about the bad parts of rescuing animals, but it can be tough. You need patience, and experience. You need to rehabilitate and train. You need to remember that trauma informs many of their reactions. You understand all of that and dear Dorothy is so lucky to have found you.
Good for her, I love to see dogs enjoying a swim. Ours really don't like water, as was very obvious when Mavis fell off the narrowboat and into the canal last week ... thank goodness for life jackets!
