Day Out

I didn’t want to sit and read a book
I wanted some breeze on my face
I wanted to see people.

I took myself off to the Mostyn Gallery which was holding an exhibition called The Ultimate Kiss by Jacqueline de Jong.
I’m not a fan of avant-garde and so DeJong’s early work depicting erotic and violent scenes with hybrid monsters did bother me. But her later pop art work with its cheerful , jolly colours was eye catching, even to an art dunce like me.

I preferred the first one above, a more traditional piece….a self portrait.

I mooched around Waterstones and bought Alan Cummings’ autobiography then walked to the pier to buy a coffee, so I could sit and watch the world go by.

The light started to change and the temperature had started to drop when I walked back to Trinity Square. strangely I bumped into my divorce solicitor coming out of her sister office there. We had an odd conversation that I will share tomorrow

I bought pulled pork and cauliflower cheese for supper

  1. I have that book it's very good if a bit harrowing in places. He is one of my favourite actors did you watch Instinct. It was a pity it only ran for one season.

  3. I hate it when people say this but, you look tired in your photograph …… too many night shifts maybe ? Did you watch Alan Cummings and Miriam Margolyes going around Scotland ? I loved it …… I think his autobiography will be interesting by some of the things he said in that tv programme. Hope you are putting your feet up . Look after yourself John. XXXX

  4. Sounds like you found just what was needed. Fresh air, a bit of culture, coffee, a good book and tasty food. xx

  5. That second painting looks like one we're not supposed to necessarily "like," but I'm not quite sure how to respond to it!

    1. Her work seems to be very provocative
Perhaps Rachel can explain it better than I ever could

    2. I am familiar with the work of Asger Jorn her husband and I am a follower of the Situationist Movement in Paris and Cobra in Holland/Denmark. I know little of her. He was great and his friend Guy Debord wrote the best ever summary of a drinking session that started one Friday night and ended one Friday a month later. Jorn's work is colourful and figurative in a weird way. I can see it in de Jongs too in your photographs here.

  6. You describe a very pleasant day. The self-portrait is my favorite too. The beach looks quiet and perfect for a good walk. Watching the tides move and looking over the seas to the horizon is always a restorative constant. Enjoy.

  8. What a beautiful deserted beach! Do you ever beach comb, look for ''treasure''? Dinner sounds so delish.

    1. Not often Lizzy, Llandudno beach is a pebble beach and not easy to amble on . The beach nearer home is much nicer

  9. I grew up near the ocean. Your picture reminded me of how soothing it was to sit near it and daydream. I miss the crashing waves and salty smells. On my next trip out east I plan to bring a metal detector and hunt for treasure. I may be watching too many treasure hunting shows.

What a lovely seaside so close that you can enjoy it at almost any time when you want to feel the wind in your face.
I so agree about the art exhibit photos - I much, much, much prefer the self portrait.
Enjoy your dinner and the evening.

    Hugs!

  13. I'm a big fan of de Jong, she is part of a movement of which I would have counted myself many years ago. A sort of 'stream of consciousness' way of painting.
