It’s time I return to one of my favourite places
Chatsworth House in Derbyshire
I was only thinking the other day about when I last visited this grand old house and it must be almost sixteen years ago now.
When I lived in Sheffield, only 14 miles away to the North East, Chatsworth was a favourite destination on a weekend, whether it was for an amble through the house and gardens. A visit to the famous shop, which was located in the old shire horse stables out on the estate, or just to walk by the river below the garden terraces.
In a fit of nostalgia I’ve arranged to meet an old friend from Sheffield there in December
It’s a four hour round trip for me , but it will be worth going even if it is for just the day
To say hello again to The Veiled Vestal by Monti will be a highlight
It will be like saying “So you’re here again” to an old friend.
Blood tests and investigations
More antibiotics
Hey ho
What a beautiful home and amazing Veiled Vestal and how marvelous that it was so close by during your time in Sheffield. Better yet is your plan to return in December in the company of a good friend. Just thinking about it is a good way to pass the (hopefully) quiet hours on night shift.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
I didn’t have the chance last night lol
DeleteAn inspiring place, and a perfect time of year to revisit. Some wonderful things there to see and the perfect way to recharge the batteries after illness. The journey will be grounding too. Have a good day. X
ReplyDeleteThe house is synonymous with my time in Sheffield . Not only in its history but in its music ( I’ve attended many concerts there)
DeleteI was hoping to visit Chatsworth when Covid struck. I look forward to your photos very much. Will they have their Christmas decorations up? So envious!
ReplyDeleteI think the Christmas lights should be up
DeleteI suggest you make time to visit the Farm Shop - they usually have some very special Xmas fare.
ReplyDeleteI adore the shop , always have
DeleteJohn, hope you are soon feeling better. I am not sure whether you are open to distance Healing (I am a Reiki Master); if you do let me know. Will not do without your permission as not everyone is open to this and I would not want to contravene any personal belief systems.
DeleteWith regard to Chatsworth, we recently ordered some Devonshire Gold cheese via Hartington Dairies online. This cheese is very different and very moorish and it was created for Chatsworth House. Can I recommend you hit the farm shop when at Chatsworth just to try a little.
Hugs and take care as usual. Sending you good thoughts in any event.
Pattypan xx
Patty , your support Is always welcome x
DeleteWill send you some healing later this evening John when it is quieter. Just a word of warning, any healing can make the recipient very sleepy. Please be mindful of this and please also drink lots of plain water, it is bland but effective xx hugs xx
DeleteI'm ashamed to say I've never visited Chatsworth House. Do you have to book because of Covid? The veiled Vestal is beautifully ethereal. The grounds will look amazing in December, especially if there's a frost. Magical. xx
ReplyDeleteYes you have to book a time to go into the house and the gardens but not the estate
DeleteThe Veiled Vestal amazes me. To be able to sculpt stone like that.
ReplyDeleteI remember seeing her for the first time, she took my breath away
DeleteThat's a lovely plan. I take it you've both booked your timed tickets (just been looking at the website - I suppose it's only to be expected these days).
ReplyDeleteYes all booked x
DeleteMoving with Mitchel beat me to it …. I can never get over how beautiful the Veiled Vestal is and how incredible the sculpting is. XXXX
ReplyDeleteUp close she is sublime and incredibly moving
DeleteSorry to hear it, John [that you are off sick again]. My mother instilled in me, and I - in turn - on my son, that you can't hurry recovery. Easy does it.
ReplyDeleteMore tests? Tests are good if unnerving. The true test is how we live with the fallout. Says the laywoman to the nurse.
All the best,
U
Thank you
DeleteI love Chatsworth too. The Devonshires are good people as well. That sculpture is drapery carving at its best - trickery!
ReplyDeleteThe sight of the entire estate staff standing to attention along the Chatsworth roads at the funerals of the late duke and duchess stand testament to what you said
DeleteDid you meet them Tom?
Yes, the Mitford sister was a gem.
DeleteJust seen Ursula's comment Sorry to see you are still unwell. Take it easy.x
ReplyDeleteI am Rachel . Off work again , on the couch with the dogs
DeleteGet well soon John. The Veiled Vestal must be a breathtaking sight.
ReplyDeleteShe is , for sure
DeleteJust seen your update. Take care of yourself, John. Hope the blood tests etc come up with some answers. xx
ReplyDeleteFingers crossed
Deletefrom another plane like your Willis x
ReplyDeleteTrust u
Deletebut I'm being spiritual John-I have recieved the power of the universe through a reiki healer on many an occasion x
DeleteThe first time I saw her I was transfixed, and even now, dozens of times later, I still have trouble believing that she is, in fact, such a hard material.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a believer in anything much, but looking at her, I think perhaps Monti's hands were guided by a higher power, she's just so beautiful!
I hope you're feeling a tad better this afternoon! X
Beautifully written
DeleteYour words capture my own thoughts when we first met
It is nice to have something special to look forward to. Hope you feel better soon!
ReplyDeleteThank u x
DeleteThat sculpture has always amazed me. I have tried to imagine how you'd even create that look and cannot. I am very sorry to hear that you are still sick. This is starting to sound serious.
ReplyDeleteI have felt better Debby xx I’m sure things will now pop into place
DeleteChatsworth sounds delightful! And that is certainly a famous (and amazing) sculpture -- I'd love to see it in person!
ReplyDeleteShe is tucked away in the main gallery of the house
DeleteYou often just come across her by accident
Looks delightful something to look forward to when you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteIf you come back to this country David , a trip is seriously in order
DeleteTake it easy - could it be you went back too early?
ReplyDeleteNo, even with my strong protestations , I was given too short a dose of antibiotics
DeleteThat sculpture! I really want to touch it! How can it possibly be stone...
ReplyDeleteHope this course of antibiotics does the trick, John.
Yes it’s sublime
DeleteDoes the Duke of Devonshire still own Chatsworth? I'm sorry you're not well.
ReplyDeleteLove,
Janie
I think it’s a charitable organisation on behalf of the family
DeleteI so hope this batch is working.
ReplyDeleteHey ho
DeleteSo sorry you weren't listened to when the too-short dose was prescribed. Hope the tests illuminate what is amiss so you can get the proper tx and meds. quickly and feel back to your wonderful, jovial (and other lovely adjectives) self soonest.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Here in Queensland the government provided free vitamin C tablets with the first years of antibiotics, doctor Lady Cilento continued this many years after the state stopped for financial reasons.
ReplyDeleteAnything that helps meds be more effective worth a try.
Late to the party as usual. I hope you are feeling much better now the antibiotics are kicking in. That sculpture is unreal. So beautiful and that is coming from someone who is not the least arty in any way.
ReplyDeleteJo in Auckland
Oh you poor sausage. I hope this next course of abs kicks in soon xo
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! I loved the house in the Kiera Knightly version of Pride and Prejudice. The sculptures are breathtaking!
