The bathroom is spruced and the kitchen and living room are immaculate
I’ve got friends coming around for supper.
The first time I’ve had friends around since before lockdown
On the hall wall there is a scuff mark
One day I will paint over it but not yet.
I hope my guests don’t think I’m a slob
But to be honest I don’t care if they do.
The scuff mark is of William’s bum
He loved to rub it on the wall and did so until he squealed in painful pleasure
The marks are layers of Welsh terrier hair oil
Left with much delight and satisfaction over several years
One day, I will paint over them
But not yet
William, a few weeks before he died
You should paint a "frame " around it, and make it a feature. A new art wall for the cottage. xx
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest the very same thing. x
DeleteI was about to say"quickly quickly"scrub it off before Chic Eleanor arrives but now you have explained it's to be treasured-You could maybe sign it or put a Heart alongside x
ReplyDeleteOn enlargement(to the right of the corner)I can see a Welsh Terrier laughing, mouth slightly open and both of his eyes x
DeleteOne day, oaths after the death of my old dog, a ball of fur skittered out of a corner and into my vac. I cried.
ReplyDeleteJoyce
I ate one of my dog hairs so he is still with me-call me weird x
ReplyDeleteI know exactly what you mean. I had a similar mark from a wet cat taking the corner as tightly as possible to come to the kitchen. It reminds us they were here.
ReplyDeleteWhy not simply explain to your guests what the mark is if you see them eyeing the smudge! And, depending on where that corner is, why would anyone see it? If it's in a public area and they look at it and question it ... Simply explain!
ReplyDeleteWhy make it a big mystery?
Hope the get-together and meal goes off splendidly!
I can understand that. I still keep the glasses my dog chewed.
ReplyDeleteI'd suggest adding flourishes and squiggles of colorful paint to make it look intentional. I see the free form design as denser at the bottom and more airy at the top and outer edges. Not today, but someday!
ReplyDeleteHave a glorious time with your good friends!
Hugs!
I love thst hsppy pattern William has left just as I love that particular photograph of you and William - it just oozes sheer love and trust between the two of you. Such a lovely breed of dog aren't they? (and you're not bad yourself either)
ReplyDeleteYou dont need to explain anything. An honor to a great loving friend. William is a reminder of beautiful days with you.
ReplyDeleteTreasure the memories
ReplyDeleteI of course, being pure of mind, read it as burn marks.
ReplyDeleteEvery sophisticated dinner party needs some conversation starters and what better to kick off a successful evening than talking about a Welsh terrier's bum marks? Chic Eleanor will be delighted to contribute.
ReplyDeleteDear dog in heaven [William], YP has managed to make me laugh.
DeleteEnjoy your first PC (Post Covid) dinner party, John. Hot tip of the day: When in doubt dim the lights. Candles will do wonders for one's guests' complexion and all those cobwebs missed will blend in with the decor.

I was the same when our dog, also William, left muddy paw prints on the kitchen floor shortly before he died. They were just by the back door and although I cleaned the rest of the floor I left that patch for a while. Every one of our dogs have left a gaping hole.
ReplyDeleteSigns of a home that is lived in and loved
ReplyDeleteI will be alone in the clean freak minority, and say that soon, not today!, you need to give that corner a good scrub and repaint. William lives on in your heart forever.
ReplyDeleteHave a fun evening!
Sweet William! He will always be remembered. Have a wonderful evening with your guests!
ReplyDeleteBuild a frame around it, as artwork from William.
ReplyDeleteYou will always have sweet memories of William. I'd frame the lovely picture of you and William and give it a place of honor. Enjoy your dinner party. I'm sure it will be wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOh, just clean it.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, I have just remembered inheriting my father's last car - Rover 2000 - and never wanting to clean the greasy mark from the headrest where my late mother sat. What a hypocrite I am!
DeleteIn France we have a similar wall; although maybe not quite so grubby. The wall is in a strategic position between kitchen and sitting room, and all the dogs have slept against it, leaving a mark that I would never erase. It reminds me of Monty, and Bok, and now even Billy had started to sleep there. It is 'history'.
ReplyDeleteYou love him very much.
ReplyDeleteI don't even know you, but I love your heart.
ReplyDeleteI totally understand. Our dog Tess hated certain high pitched noises, which included the introductory music to "The Antiques Roadshow", so we always dived for the TV remote to mute the sound to avoid distressing her ... we still do this and she's been dead for over 5-years. One day we'll hear the music again - but not yet.

Goodness, there must have been an awful lot of bum rubbing to produce such huge marks on the wall. And an awful lot of painful pleasure.
