“ He’s not the easiest of patients!”
So the know-all receptionist told me when I called back to the vets after Albert had received his X-ray
“ I did warn the vet that he’s not the friendliest of cats, he WAS mismanaged at a previous surgery “ I reminded her but she wasn’t really interested.
I asked to see the vet
Albert had come round from his anaesthetic and was fighting fit.
I could hear him from reception.
I had booked him in early as a precaution. He was eating fine and had asked to go out early this morning for his usual hunt, but he was slightly guarding his deformed leg and he limped a little more than usual.
It had taken two burly country vets and a practice nurse to anaesthetise him.
He had no new leg fractures but must have jarred his old injury the vet told me as there was marked arthritic changes around his repaired leg fracture of a decade ago. The vet noted an “old “ vertebral fracture that was probably missed by his former vet. She had also checked his teeth and removed a tick from his shoulder given the information he didn’t like , even me picking him up
“ He’s lucky” she said “ and he’s a fighter!”
I noted she had a fresh plaster to the back of her hand.
Without the dogs in the car , he wailed all the way home from inside his basket, only shutting up when I let him out in the kitchen where the dogs smelled hesitantly at his left leg, where he had been shaved and canulated .
He’s slept on my bed most of the afternoon, only coming down to eat some specially cooked chicken on the window ledge. I snapped him then sharing my eggy breakfast plate with Mary before he took himself off upstairs again to rest.
The fight all but left him
Hopefully a few weeks of rest and treats will see him right as rain. ;)

DeleteSo happy to read he is okay!

Deleteoh, John ... our little ones suffer and we hate it. he is thankful to be at home again. Albert looks like my gentle kitty Jag who died 4 hrs. ago. I miss him still. Love seeing Albert. Warmest wishes for good health to him. Hugs from the mini-mountain in Maine.
ReplyDeleteChin up Regina ….xxx
DeleteSo relieved he's OK. He obviously has the same temperament as my neighbour's black cat. Looks like butter wouldn't melt, but one false move and he was all claws and teeth! I think Albert needs a bit of TLC for a while. I'm sure you already give him that anyway! xx
ReplyDeleteI have two friends Ruth and Colin who he will allow to pick him up. Me, strangely never
DeleteLove to Albert, so relieved he's doing ok, hopefully get his mojo back soon
ReplyDeleteI don’t think it ever left him
DeleteI'm so pleased that he's back home with you again-it was very worrying for you-people think my teddy is a sweet little thing but I had to warn the vet again this morning at his regular booster appointment that he can be s bit snappy-and sure enough he was-so he was carried inside by the vet with his muzzle on and back again to me-no messing x
ReplyDeleteI doubt he would ever go in his carry basket again
DeleteThank you for the update, John. I have a bitey cat and always warn the vet staff before any examination. Now they always say WE KNOW in a rueful voice.
ReplyDeleteThey wrapped him in a blanket with his head sticking out
DeleteOur vet staff use arm-length leather gardening gloves!
DeleteYes the practice nurse said they usedgauntlets
DeleteSo glad he's ok and none the worse for wear!
ReplyDeleteWell, it was useful to know the results of the X-ray even though I’m not surprised . Painkillers may be the way forward
DeleteSo glad he is home again. I hope he recovers soon. I just love reading about him.
ReplyDeleteHe’s part of the furniture
DeleteSo glad that Albert is recovering. Lovely photo of him with Mary.
ReplyDeleteHe’s missed his breakfast,he was hungry
DeleteI had a cat that the vet refused to examine after several tries. He was fierce! And lived for many, many years.
ReplyDeleteAlbert has only been to the vets once before this visit
DeleteYou are more in love with your Albert than Queen Victoria was with hers. I wonder if Prince Albert had a Prince Albert. Get well soon Albert!
ReplyDeleteHe’s been with me the longest
DeleteThirteen years now, unlucky for some
He sounds like my daughter's old and very feisty black cat. On one visit they needed to ask the assembled veterinary riot squad why they didn't buy big motorcyclists' gauntlets to handle cats who, perfectly reasonably, didn't take kindly to thermometers being shoved up their arses and needles stuck into their skin. Instead they were told to take him home and bring him back next day only after sneaking powerful sedation into his food an hour beforehand. Gauntlets would have been simpler. Glad to hear Albert is settling back in. I am surprised the car didn't come of worse than him.
ReplyDeleteThe trouble with Albert is
Delete1 he insists on coming for a walk with the dogs
2 he is black and invisible in the dark
3 with his disability he’s slightly slower than he could be
4 he won’t wear a bright collar
He’s a bugger
There's an old soldier where I go on holiday who I sometimes see when I'm in the hills with my naughty ones-he has an assortment of terriers and he called across-"can I get ahead-they're right buggers"x
DeleteDon’t know the word canulated. What does it mean?
ReplyDeleteTo have a needle put in for the administration of drugs xx
DeleteDid your eyeballs bleed when they gave you the bill?
ReplyDeleteI haven’t seen it…they post it to you….gulp
DeleteGlad it wasn't worse and that he's home now. Hope the pain isn't too bad. For Albert and also for you when you get the vets bill.
ReplyDeleteHe’s not insured …..😾
DeleteGlad Albert is ok and I hope the bill won't be too horrendous. I know Albert won't wear a collar but have you thought of getting a flashing dog lead (for the dogs, obviously) just for night walks? It may draw attention to drivers that there is someone in the lane ahead of them
ReplyDeleteGood idea sue , I will have a look on line right now

DeleteGlad I could help x
DeleteGood news. Thank you for keeping us updated.
ReplyDeleteNo problem , it kept me away from my paperwork x
DeleteSo relieved he's going to be ok. He reminds me of our Riff-Raff, another feisty black cat.
ReplyDeleteXoxo
Barbara
His aloofness comes from, I think, the envious nature of the dogs
DeleteEffectively they have kept him off our knees
Happy Albert made it through that whole mess, poor dear and a tick too!
ReplyDeleteHope he rallies and feels “tip top!”
Doubt you’ll never get him to the vet office again!
Not without Valium
DeleteIs that for you, Albert or both?
DeleteBoth lol
DeleteNot sure Albert's reaction to this second ever visit to a vet isn't perfectly understandable. Who the hell wants to be stuck with a needle? You scratch me, I scratch back. My normally very good-natured dog turns into a whirling dervish at the vet. Doesn't bite but it takes four people to hold him down to give him his shots. Glad Albert and the vet&co made it through with minimal damage.
ReplyDeleteYes, especially as the only vet visit he ever had was filled with pain and bad care
DeleteYAY! xx
ReplyDelete👏🏻
DeleteOh bless him - he looks SO relieved to be home, and glad nothing radically wrong with him. Bet he won't be volunteering to go in the cat carrier again in a hurry . . .
ReplyDeleteHe did come for our last walk again tonight which was rather moving
Deleteway to go albert! you bounced like a well made ball. i am so glad no real harm was done. having chows, i hear that line about 'being a difficult patient' only too often.
ReplyDeleteI did warm them
DeleteWhen you get the bill, send him to dispute it for you.
ReplyDeleteLol I doubt he’d set paw in the surgery again
DeleteGood for Albert. X
ReplyDeleteXx
Deleteglad to hear Albert has no new injuries. He must have used up one of his lives, though. Cats... may he be back to his normal self soon
ReplyDeleteHe has 7 left
DeleteH's a tough old boy - sounds like one of our farm cats - I love a cat with a bit of spirit.
ReplyDeleteThat's my boy, Albert! Yes, make those nasty vets wear "The Gauntlets" to handle you! Show them who's boss! (Glad he's okay!)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he's okay but I'm sure he must be very sore. It's good you took him in to the vets to be safe. He may get cranky but I know he is a special old friend and family member.
ReplyDeletethank God he is ok
ReplyDeleteAm glad to read there was no new fracture but as older folks can attest, arthritis isn't any fun be you person or cat. Am glad Albert is happily back at home.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Feeling tons of relief at his being where he is - not just physically there safe in your home but condition-wise too which, mercifully, he's at least managing to cope with for now, [seemingly].
ReplyDelete"I noted she had a fresh plaster to the back of her hand" lol
ReplyDeleteMy cat would not be an easy patient. Good thing she is healthy.
ReplyDeleteOh dear I have missed so many of your posts just catching up John, poor Albert he's quite the trooper in the big scope of things he seems like the top dog in the pack and as the senior goes his own way cats rule
ReplyDeleteI hope he will be ok.
One of my cats had a note in red on the vets chart- “nasty cat”.
ReplyDeleteInstead of using painkillers for Albert you could try golden paste made from ground turmeric, coconut oil and ground black pepper. You can get more details from Facebook, the group is called Turmeric support group people and pets
