My elder sister bought me a wisteria for my birthday with the strict instructions of keeping it well watered and fed with cold tea.
I planted it today and put in an arch over the front gate as Dorothy watched me carefully.
Mary lay on the lawn carefully watching her very own rubber chicken with an obsession previously attributed to Winnie
The arch needs securing to the wall but I rather like it’s height and position over the gate and while the wisteria grows, I added some sweet peas to its base which will fill in the gaps this summer.
Mary couldn’t sleep any closer to her rubber chicken
That will look stunning when it gets going, and add to your sense of privacy in the front garden.
ReplyDeleteI never thought of that , yes, you are right. Previously I had a Californian lilac there but it blew down
DeleteYour wisteria/sweet pea arch is perfect for your cottage and will look stunning when it flowers. Dorothy and Mary look so comfy, and compliment the room wonderfully! Where do you get to sit? xx
ReplyDeleteI have the couch , the dogs arnt allowed on it
DeleteI love an arch John-its a bit windy here at times so I'm not sure how long one would last-your home is getting lovelier all the time-I met a bulldog the other day and my tich barked but she just rolled over-I'm getting a new phone so hopefully I will be able to send you a piccy of my thatch x
ReplyDeleteMavis!!!!!
Deletebut I do have a thatch John-the poor little furry one had to be shaved previously-I googled it and have massaged organic coconut oil regularly and there is still a sparse area but looking much better x
DeleteKeep me out of it. I'm averse to all things thatch related 😁
DeleteThe arch will certainly compliment your sweet garden but mind that wisteria as it will reach out and grab hold of whatever it can reach.
ReplyDeleteWhat is better than sleeping dogs, safe, secure, and one of them happy with a friend very close to her?
Hugs!
I know they get wild sometimes
DeleteThank A for the cold tea tip, it will look fabulous when it grows over the arch…
ReplyDeleteIt’s Ann’s tip Debbie xx
DeleteBeautiful …… you have worked so hard on your.cottage and it shows …. It is looking so lovely John. XXXX
ReplyDeleteThanks jac.....howsthe arm ?
Delete‘ Bleeding awful ‘ 😂🤣😂 Just got the surgeons letter ….. he said the surgery was challenging which is a bit worrying 🤣
DeleteI keep quoting you to everyone I tell …… ‘ Onwards and Upwards ‘ XXXX
Hummm “ challenging” covers quite a lot
DeleteHappy to talk about it more if you want
Thats really kind John ..... i might take yo up on that in the future ! ..... our daughter and daughter-in-law are OT's & our daughters partner is a Physiotherapist so I have a lot of support ! .... & I've got you 🥰 XXXX
DeleteAnytime
DeleteOh to have a cottage like yours with a wisteria vine on the arch at the entrance . . . Sweet peas too. Love, Love, Love it . . .
ReplyDeleteThank your sister for the “cold tea” food tip!
Unfortunately I don’t really drink tea lol
DeleteGet your colleagues to save their used tea bags for you in a container, and soak them again when you get home?
DeleteI've have wisteria. Three years from now you'll be trimming it weekly, and it spreads... easily.
ReplyDeleteThat’s what I’m hoping
DeleteThe stones in your wall and in your home look quite old. When was your home built, John? I can just picture that arch covered in blooms. I am reading about wisteria and it says it is toxic for dogs? Is that true?
ReplyDeleteThe original cottage was built in1765
DeleteCharming.
ReplyDeleteit will look beautiful but don't be surprised if it reaches in the window after you. wisteria can get wicked crazy.
ReplyDeleteI’m getting worried lol
DeleteJohn i hate to be a naysayer but that wisteria is going to destroy that arch and eat it for breakfast. I love ours but it has ruined a heavy wooden pergola. Wisteria should come with a warning label.
ReplyDeleteI was going to say much the same thing. That arch doesn't look a match for Wisteria. I had one that completely demolished a fence. Still love it though but it needs something very sturdy to hold it up.
DeleteJo in Auckland
Really ? Well let’s hope it will become self supporting , is that possible ? That would be ideal in my book
DeleteI love the arch. The entry and garden will be even more charming. I didn’t think that was possible.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Wisteria grows over will that make the arch a "kissing gate" ?
ReplyDeleteThat would be loverly-you could make a sign- "kissing gate-50p or whatever a kiss"x
DeleteI spent yesterday mowing meadows and pruning my Wisterias. The Wisterias grow like the devil, and need to be 'controlled'.
ReplyDeleteOh I love an arch with something beautiful growing over it. It's going to be amazing in a couple of years. That little cottage of yours just keeps on getting more and more beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWisteria is a bit of a thug but a beautiful and sweet smelling thug. I miss the one we had in France.
ReplyDeleteI keep forgetting how lovely your house is. And what is this witchcraft with tea and wisterias? I need to know more! I planted one in the spring but it never really took over.
ReplyDelete*runs to google*
XOXO
We don't have wisteria, so I'm no expert, but my understanding is that it grows like crazy and isn't particularly fussy! Love the arch.
