Be Prepared

My sister warned me that there was a group of nefarious types stealing dogs locally.
Apparently this has been a more common practice given the lockdown phenomenon of soaring dog prices and increased demand for designer dogs.
I saw Maggie from the village this morning and warned her as her sweet cocker made goo goo eyes at Mary
“I’m prepared” she said pragmatically showing me a specially made waist band to which she had fixed her dog’s lead to with what looked like a climber’s carabina.
Keeps my hands free” she said, “ in case of emergencies”
I looked impressed
She pointed to a small piece of equipment on her wasteband
Here is my rape alarm too !”
I laughed and was just about to ask her if she was packing a gun , when she fished into a pocket and brought out a small canister
“ pepper spray !” She explained

God help anyone trying to steal Maggie’s dog I thought

  1. Sounds like Margaret was trying to warn you off just in case you were feeling frisky.

  2. This has been one of my biggest concerns recently while walking my three dogs. I have changed my walking route so that I am in a build up area just in case someone tries to take my dogs and I can scream for help. I have also changed the times of day that I walk them. I think I will follow your friend's example and attach extra clips to lead and collar . Such Evil people who steal people's pets, it causes such heartbreak to the owners. I have to admit that although I consider myself a strong woman, if someone stole my pets, it would finish me, I would never recover from it

  3. They deserve anything she can dish out. I suspect the greater risk is a dog left unattended in a garden, or allowed to wander off the lead. Sad for the dog and the owner (does anyone own a dog, or are we merely keepers?)

    It's good to be prepared.
I so hope those who are heartlessly stealing dogs will be caught soon and put in jail where they belong. Are Mary and Dorothy micro-chipped?

    Hugs!

  5. HOW LOW do people have to stoop to be stealing doggies? HANG THEM!

  6. Good for her - I hope she never needs to use any of it.

  7. P.S. Travel - they are breaking into people's homes to steal dogs, even from elderly pensioners etc. They also attack people in parks and rip the dog from them. Close-to-whelping bitches are exactly what they like best as they get a litter of puppies for nothing. Heart-breaking posts come up on my Facebook page daily.

  8. The motto of the Boy Scouts of America (which, ironically, only includes the United States of America), is "Be Prepared." I don't think they meant pepper spray. May Margaret never feel the need to use it.

  13. I've heard of people knocking on doors, seemingly to ask an innocent question, and if they see or hear a dog, they later come back to steal it. Such low-life! Sadly, too, many rescue centres are being inundated with pets no longer wanted because lockdown is easing and people are going back to work. My mind boggles at the stupidity. xx

  15. When my children were young we lived on 100 wooded acres. They were only allowed to play close by near our home where it was open and had a circular driveway so we could check on them all the time. We had a little mini-schnauzer who played with them. Not only did someone steal our dog, but one time a car with two men pulled into our driveway and start chatting up our curly blond, eyelashed blue eyed younger son. The dognap was heartbreaking; our vet said there were rumors of men in the village stealing dogs for laboratories. Thank goodness when the two men chatting w/ my younger son took off after the older son approached the car. Certainly awful feelings of vulnerability afterwards. Be safe. Hugs from the mini-mountain in Maine.

  16. It's happening where I live too-I'm now on edge most of the time and only a few weeks ago a young woman was in tears after a couple she thought were enticing her young labrador from her.Two men stopped and asked an elderly gent about his dog,one reached forward to the dog and the old gent an ex boxer walloped him in the face and they ran off.Even 7 years ago walking back to my house on the very day I had just collected my lily from the dogs home a black shiny truck stopped alongside me and there were 4 strong men inside-"that's a fine looking dog" one said clearly a gypsy-as a neighbour was on his drive behind a large hedge I avoided them and they drove away x

  17. Good thinking on Margaret's part. A safety device, a backup just in case it fails, and a backup for the backup. LOL. Can you please ask what the rape alarm is and how it works?

    ReplyDelete

    1. A rape alarm is just a personal siren. If you feel threatened, you just press a button and it emits a loud noise. Hopefully, that scares off the attacker, or alerts people nearby. Sadly, it doesn't castrate the b******d!

    2. Thanks for the explanation hooker x

    3. Thanks for the info HH, and I'm you on the issue of castration.

    4. Just yesterday, my employer issued any employee who wanted one a device called "a screamer". Yup, it's a rape alarm.

We've had two assaults in the staff parking lots in the last two weeks.

  18. I have heard of pedigree dogs being snatched from yards.....With my previous pug, I had some guy walk along with us, uninvited, and he asked me a lot of intrusive questions about my dog, like how much does a pedigreed Pug cost etc./is he chipped, and so on. I refused to answer and we hustled off home. You know pugs will go with anyone, esp if a treat is offered, so I m careful.

It is kind of sad a woman needs pepper spray and a rape siren in a sweet village like yours though.

  20. PS: My niece 'carries'. She insists that this makes her safe, and that 'nobody messes with her'. We own the property two mailboxes down. I don't carry a weapon and feel no need to. Nobody messes with me, either. Yet I will never be able to explain to her that it has nothing to do with the fact that she carries a pistol.

  21. If she were American, she'd have a gun! Not that I'm advocating that, necessarily.

I did hear about the dog thefts, though. I think the cops just busted a dog-theft ring somewhere outside London.

  23. We have had a lot of dog thefts locally - totally heartbreaking. I am also now very wary of answering the door with the dogs around. I try to shut them in another room, but it is obvious we have dogs as they bark at everything, and throw themselves at the window should anyone dare even walk past! It's a sad world that we have to worry about these things.

  29. First I've heard of dog-nappers; but I do know a lot of people who have gotten a dog during Covid ... usually a rescue. Except for my next-door neighbors. They got a purebred something-or-other. It usually barks around 7 a.m., and then again around 11 p.m.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Good god. I think I would die if someone took Franklin or Penelope. They are rescues, not purebred, so probably not wanted, which is fine with me. I want them.

  35. Most of our joint readers know my Mavis's story and how she was stolen off our land. Once I did get approached by a chap VERY interested in Suky the Pug, and I'm afraid I painted her in a very bad light and he quickly wandered off. I told him she was a spayed bitch on three types of medication with bone problems, and had been bought for a song as she was so ill so often ... sorry Suky we know only the spayed bit is true :-)
