Long Legged, Thin Lipped

Waiting outside the vets

My Hitchcock lecture tonight was the most disappointing of the eight I’d signed up for. It felt very cobbled together so I left after an hour and listened to the end of the David Sidaris essay on radio 4, which was more stimulating but somewhat sadder.
In retrospect I hadn’t then realised that I was in no mood for Hitchcock . I had just spent an unsatisfactory hour and a half or so at the vets, being gently bullshitted by well intentioned young vet about Mary’s recurrent ear infection.
I was polite enough, recognising the way she covered what she didn’t know but when she commented that the old surgery on Mary’s ear was heavy handed then asked where I had the surgery done, my lips went thin and I hardened my tone and stare .
“ The operation was done here !” I reminded her.
My tone and lips became even thinner after I was kept waiting twice for a discussion then for meds which had been labelled incorrectly.
“This has not been a good consultation “ I told the vet, something she didn’t follow up
I guess that the Hitchcock lecture just irritated me more

Today’s good news is that I have picked the colour of my bedroom walls.
Given the fact I have a gently vaulted bedroom ceiling which will be painted a brilliant white, the room can take a dark tone of wall colour.
So this will be the palate I will use.....a deep dark blue

Oh.....and Thank you all for your painting advice . I have found the exploration really interesting and somewhat challenging as now I will have to change my bedroom curtains too.
Expensively glorious Curtains that my husband and I bought together from Laura Ashley
Our very first purchase for a shared home.
I think “lobster orange”;may be a good choice , lined of course

I thought it was Wednesday today and am somewhat disappointed that it is  Thursday .

  4. If the room is clean leave it and save the money. If you want to change things for the sake of it, paint it white and then see how you feel. Saving money for a rainy day is always a good idea. The lobster claws are frightening and your lovers may feel uneasy with them. Leave the curtains and save the money.

    2. That's fine then. It is 15 years old so that gives a fair reason for change. You would probably be changing it by now whatever your circumstances. Have you thought about the lobster claws?

We took our cat to the vet the other day , he has a recurring skin problem the vet said he did not know what the cause was so worm him deflea him and bring him back in two days for a blood test . Blood test all clear so the treatment the vet recommended was a tin of sardines in oil once a week , cost of this prescription 150euros thank you very much , I am glad the cat is ok but 150 euros .

No, my friend, you're not nearly as rotund as Alfred H. was. He would look much rounder in the same shadow pose, too.
Was P correct that your chosen color is F&B "Stiffkey" Blue? I intend to paint some room in our home F&B "Borrowed Light" as that's a delightful barely there blue.
Hope Mary is okay and I suggest next time you take a folding chair and lemonade with you to the vet's office!

  15. The color choice is PERFECT! One of my friends painted his work from home office that dark blue and it's so classy and interesting and modern. Perhaps the lobster red is not so good an idea for curtains in a room where you sleep during the day sometimes? Red curtains change color drastically as the sunlight changes and can look great and then awful. Maybe a few red pillow cases instead, go with barley tones neutral linen modern drapes or shades. Or a bold black and white?

Save the beautiful LA curtains! Maybe someday you ll use them or send them to me to make you a quilt, after Covid times.

You have such excellent taste. I love the cottage's interior being modernized. You didn't say if you truly are colorblind; if so in what way and how do you compensate so cleverly?

Similar to a charity shop - except the shop owner gets his/her percentage and the previous owner gets the rest of the set price.
I'd also keep the LA curtains as they would be hard to come by if your taste changes again. Meanwhile, they could lurk in an under-bed box or be used as a table cloth if you're careful not to spill!

      Hugs!

The curtains would need a black-out lining or get a room-darkening window shade so you could darken the room when you need to sleep during the day.

  23. Love the deep blue feature wall. Deep blue has a soft sophistication to it. I use Gold Medal Pets, Ear Powder for Dogs (from Amazon) to prevent ear infections. Start with antibiotics to clear the infection then use the powder regularly as a preventative. Good for you, why bother with Hitchcock if it does not meet your expectations. Why not get a refund?

  26. I once attended a 'Marbling' course (painted marble effects), and very soon realised that I knew far more about certain techniques than the lecturer. I wonder if it's not the same with you about Hitchcock? That can be so frustrating.

  27. I love the blue. I guess that I'm skittish about color. We once got brave and tried to paint the library something referred as (mumble mumble) copper, and from the sample it was a soft terracotta color. We brought it home and began painting and ... you know the peach 80s bridesmaids dresses... it was awful. We stopped painting and took the can back, and she retinted it for us. We came home and with one paint swipe we both shrieked. "No. Oh no no no..." It was tropicana orange. We went immediately back to the soft gray color it had originally been. It was traumatic. You seem to be better at it. We are renovating a house right now and are considering venetian plaster for the walls.

  30. Your consultation with the vet reminds me of a consultation with a mechanic I once used. He told me that the reason I needed a new radiator was because someone had not put any anti-freeze in it. That someone was him. I didn't go back.

  31. Bloody vet. I love the colour scheme. We have a deep red bedroom, I love deep colours but am reluctant to suggest them. Do look into that Sapphire Splendour it looks delish. Also, given your cottage is old, I do recommend curtains, with a bumpf interlining. Blinds just don't have the thermal qualities. Love the idea of a gemoetric blue and white or a stripe. Fresh!!!

  33. I knew that my soft grey suggestion was far too conservative as I am not brave with strong colour on the walls. We have soft peach all over which shows off our large collection of art really well. When we re did the sitting room we put in a dado rail and decided it would be good to have a bolder colour in the bottom section. I picked a colour that matched the terracota curtains. It was awful. Came our dark orange and reminded us both of a cheap pub. We had to paint over it straight away. In the end we mixed a little of it with the soft peach and it is now a tone darker than the soft peach and is perfect. Sometimes colour can be so difficult to get right. I am really looking forward to seeing how your room turns out. I know it will be perfect for you. Sorry that got a bit long winded!

  38. https://zimfamilycockers.com/EarCleaner.html

This recipe has done wonders for 2 doggie family members who used to have recurring ear issues. Don't use if there is a current infection or injured ear drtum, but if used directly after finished meds for an ear infection, it has stopped my dogs getting infections again. They also seem to mind it less than the commercial ear cleaners you can buy. At first you have to do it often, but once the ear settles, I find once a month does the trick just to keep things in there ship-shape. Vets look skeptical, but then they never believe anything works unless they give it to you. The proof it works is in the lack of vet bills! :D

  39. John have you tried Thornit powder on Mary's ears, I own cockers and Poodles both prone to ear trouble and in 20 year have never needed the expensive crap the vets try to sell you, just sprinkle it in and around the ear canal, for preventative once a week and for treatment daily for a week or so. Thornit is about 8 quid for a tiny pot but lasts forever.

  43. I feel I need total confidence in a vet. I left the last one because of a no confidence consultation - twice, with young inexperienced vets. My bull terrier has a repetitive ear problem, not as bad as Mary's but I know a certain type of drop which they do usually prescibe works. However, I have to go through the £25 consultation every time for them to give me and charge me for the small bottle of drops. Frustrates me every time. Love the colour scheme you have chosed BTW
