Bedroom

With the new bookcase up and running, it’s time to change my bedroom’s colour.
This is where I need some help.
I am working around two very large Art Deco posters which will dominate the room.
It’s taken me an age to pick the ones I want but these are my final choices

I need suggestions of wall colour
I’m thinking chimney breast one colour the rest of the room the other
I have a vaulted ceiling and a wooden floor of ancient varnished floorboards
The lobster needs a contrasting wall colour
Ideas anyone ?

    1. What about the vaulted ceilings ....I’m liking this

    2. White ceilings, keeping it nice and light.

    3. That sounds absolutely gorgeous. I am going to ask for your advice when I need a change of colour.

    4. I like that suggestion.

    5. A note about the navy... my niece (and goddaughter) painted one wall of her guest bedroom navy, with the other 3 walls pale gray, and the navy was a beast for her. It took multiple coats and now shows every bit of dust and dog fur. She has to dust her wall. Just an FYI.

  3. I wouldn't ask me or anyone else with deficient colour vision. I'd be likely to do it in olive and gold stripes.

    2. Shades of pink with deep red highlights then?

    3. Then I thought of suggesting tartan all over (yes I know, I am not taking this seriously, life can be too serious), so in wondering which tartan I investigated what clan Scottish Grays belonged to and discovered this: "The Gray family can be Septs of either Clan Stewart or Clan Sutherland. A rebel son of the Stewarts changed his name to MacGlashan (anglicised to Gray)." You may quite like the designation as "a rebel son"; but probably not the tartan bedroom.

    4. I have my tartan , it was give. To me a while ago , lots of white in it , I didn’t like it x

    5. Ah but there are several Clan Gray tartans, one of which is a quite subtle green (though I also see the white one). Search Clan Gray tartan fabric on Google images.

    6. Green with a touch of pink actually. A nice bed throw for a mere £33.79...

  5. Liking Michelle's suggestion. Maybe a pale duck egg blue for the ceiling? xx

  7. No colour ideas but you can never go wrong with a New Yorker cover.

  8. A soft green and/or grey is always nice for a bedroom. Restful. Both would look good to me with the poster colours. Your downstairs is green, is it not? Ceiling white and then have fun with a light.

  9. Take a look at the Design Seeds website particularly design-seeds.com/tag/orange/ which takes your lobster colour and suggests contrasting and complementary colours, very similar to what Michelle suggested.

  10. Shit brown walls and spunk grey vaulted ceiling.

  11. Pale yellow, green,

  12. Palest lemon...I think of it as a30s type colour, a morning colour....ceiling, skirtings etc...white...chimney breast white.

  13. I am deadly dull. I would go with a medium shade of gray w/ creamy white trim and ceiling which would allow the art to 'pop'.

  14. I'd look at the New York poster. Use the darker green on the chimney breast and pick a paler version of green for the other walls( maybe a quarter mix of the colour). White for the ceiling.

I'm with Helsle and think the lobster would look wonderful against a deep green as they are opposites on the color wheel. White ceiling, too.
      Enjoy the possibilities!

      Hugs!

  15. Go with something bright and splashy

  16. Definitely consider a dark color for one wall. My AD and Dwell magazines show this often and it is lovely.

  17. Duck egg, on the bluer side. Yes it will look good with the grey-green in the poster and is super with red, also with wood tones. All walls including chimney breast the same colour. (It will be fun to see what you actually
    choose!)

  18. I love both the prints and are something I would have myself.

My mind went right away to a dark Navy blue. The lobster one would really pop against it, while the darkest would also compliment the earthly hues in the other print. Dark navy, while adding a color, is still a neutral, so its a win -win. Thats my best interior design advice. A warm bright yellow could be nice too, but only for a more shocking result.

    1. I myself hesitate with greens. Lighting is famous for not making things look good in green rooms. It's one reason we were taught never to do green in total in a bathroom.

  19. I think Michelle cracked this dilemma in that 2nd post; excellent choices.

  20. Go with the frame theme around the posters and paint the wall edges only in black(another frame).

    1. Other than that I would go with a buttery yellow, pale, then a shade either way , paler or more yellow , standout wall. Nothing dark, too hard to paint over later and you won't want dark forever and as others have said, grey is just too grey.

  21. We have our lobster print paired with a harborview, against a light gray wall, contrasted with dark gray in the adjoining room. Looks nice. But sounds like you want to go more colorful ... oops, sorry, I mean "grey" and "colourful."

  22. The lobster needs the blue of the sea. The New Yorker needs the black of Governor Cuomo's heart.

  23. Unless the room is naturally light and sunny, I'd go for lighter colours. Chimney breast a rich, deep violet-blue - with the lobster print on it - and the other walls either Michelle's pale grey, or pale yellow- with a hint of the orange, not veering towards the green side. If you look at a colour wheel you will see that blue-violet is opposite orange.

  24. I like the sound of navy blue for the wall with the prints. The orange of the lobster would look lovely against the blue. If you did not do blue I also thought a green would look good for the wall with the prints. It's always nice to have an accent wall.

  25. This is something I've never considered because, though I'm allowed to hang up pictures, I don't think I'm allowed to paint my apartment walls, which remain white.

  26. I know that greys are trendy, but how about a warm pale grey; maybe 'putty' colour?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I like the posters against the colour you have in the photo and it's also the colour in the background of the lobster print. I think a pale grey but just a bit stronger than the one in the photo.

  28. Duck egg blue on the walls and a deeper blue for the chimney and white ceiling x

  29. Farrow and Ball Ammonite for the walls and Blue Ground for the chimney breast. The modern emulsion is tough and mould resistant, which I find useful!

  30. I would pick out one of the greens in that first poster (which I love by the way) for one wall and something neutral on the others. We have inherited mushroom paintwork in places here (yuk, yuk, yukkety yuk I thought when we moved in) but now, damn me, I almost LIKE it!

  31. Always hard to recommend paint colours as we all like different looks ! At the risk of being shouted at by everyone, I would avoid grey ... it had been done to death and the world and his wife has grey. Grey has had its day. I would go for a Farrow and Ball white like Slipper Satin and, if you really want to do one wall in a different colour , I am loving Farrow and Ball Setting Plaster which is a dusky pink ( not pink in the sense of pink ... not girly at all ) .... it would also go with a very pale off white with a tiny bit of grey in it if you like the grey. Also, Bedfolk do a lovely quilt in the same pale dusky pink( I bought our daughter one for her spare room ) I always like to create a shell on the walls and then you can add as much colour as you like with all the accessories ..... dark is very in at the moment ( our daughter has used the very dark blue and it looks lovely ) but, I feel it isn’t right for your cottage...... just my take on it but, as I said, we all love different looks so ignore me 😂🤣😂XXXX

  32. I love the idea of a soft yellow based green, Dulux here has different colours with New Zealand names so I can't really suggest a colour, but I also love the idea of this soft apply green with a navy chimney breast.

  33. Ok, I found the UK chart and I'm pumping for Lime Jelly walls and Sapphire splendour chimney cos it is "denimier" than sapphire salute. I think the Lime jelly will really set off the ferns and the other the lobster. :)

  34. Warm grey walls with a contrasting coral coloured chimney breast to match the colour of the lobster. :)

  35. Nice posters! Oh for the days when an issue of The New Yorker cost twenty cents! Looks like plenty of others chimed in on wall colors and that's not my area of expertise anyway. :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well you know me ... I would have some green paint colour-matched to the leaves of the trees in the first picture and have that on the feature wall and then all the rest of the walls and the vaulted ceiling would be in the stone colour that surrounds the lobster.

I would then have some other items in the room that picked up on the lobster red.

  37. Hawthorn, a paint with a very soft tint of creamy yellow. You want to have a colour that's not too dark, that encourages light and welcomes you into the room. Restful but cheerful.

  38. Dark Purple on chimney, light bluish purple on other walls, white on ceiling lobster on dark purple and New York against the blue purple sky.

  40. On my computer at least, I'm seeing a blue-gray the posters share in the NY sky and the lobster background. It's a good restful color for a bedroom. Perhaps you could play off that.

  41. I am thinking to pick a green from the first one.

  42. There's an old saying that great art doesn't have to match your décor. It's a personal choice, of course, but why not choose a pale tone of your favorite color for three walls, and a darker tone for the accent wall? Your bedroom should be a place that not only reflects who you are, but makes you smile inside.

Duck egg blue would go superbly with the artwork. I'd paint all the walls the same and the ceiling and paintwork white.
You can add colour with accessories.
Grey is now old hat. Everybody and their auntie has done grey.

  45. A pop of colour in Farrow & Ball Emerald Green number w53. Which in fact is not a true Emerald Green. It's like a 1930s vintage green with a brightness to it. F&B give lots of advice about partner colours and the paints have wonderful pigment to them. Take a look at Kit Kemp's hotels, like you she loves art and makes the most wonderful colour and texture choices. Jean. x
