Talents

Books of all descriptions seem to be lying in untidy heaps on the floor.
They have got on my tits, even though I like the  intellectual look I think they afford to a living space.
I am shallow enough to have enjoyed this...

This year seems to be a year of the book. I’ve been collecting them this morning and have dusted them off
A new bookcase will be arriving soon for the bedroom , so very soon order will be restored.

It’s clean and tidy and modern and it was so easy to buy on Amazon
My plan today was to pop up to the garden centre to buy pockets of colour for the garden and patio, which now thanks to my sister look lovely but the jungle telegraph from the Trelawnyd Whats app group tells me that the queues at Jackson’s are far too big!
So I will content myself in the meantime with buying some paint to refurbish another old  wooden bookcase from my office, where I will park more flotsam of my 58 years.

This morning I have already dug deep within my testosterone maleness and successfully changed both of Bluebell’s windscreen wipers !!!!!!
I could have beaten my chest and bellowed a Tarzan call down the lane so happy I was with the result!
When I walked back to the cottage with my chest bursting I then realised that the whole  back of the cottage needs whitewashing too......
There are not enough hours in the day I think......I’ve always found that during home holidays ....my new bargain buy from Aldi ( five blank canvases for 6£ ) are also eyeing me from atop the kitchen cabinets ...I have a zoom painting meeting with my Australian friend planned for this week......
Is there NO end to this old poof’s talents?

  1. Oh, John, don't overdo it! The whitewashing will be easier when the weather warms up a bit. Time to sit back and read one of those books, methinks. xx

  2. Sorry, this is totally off topic but I wanted to ask you something. I think that I'm correct that your kitchen was an Ikea kitchen and designed and fitted by them too. Would you recommend them?

  3. You are a Renaissance man! But if it's the back of the cottage, who cares if it's whitewashed?

  4. Well done with the changing the windscreen wipers! Some are so complicated these days, they are almost the equivalent of figuring out the old Rubik's Cube.

  5. There is indeed no end to either talents or good humour - you really were in need of your rest John. I love that Book case.

  6. Is that your testosterone burst for 2021 all used up? Time to gather some flowers and tidy the cutlery drawer?

  7. Good for you John. I have been so lazy this winter. I think now of all the things I could have done, but just had no motivation. I am finally getting out into the flower beds for weeding. I hope I can keep it up.

  8. Wait until you retire. You'll wonder how you ever had time to go to work. I'm wondering whether to advertise for an assistant.

  9. That's a very smart bookcase and your books will fill it with colour.

  13. I'm honestly exhausted this morning! I was dreaming half the night of walking around Trelawnyd looking for your cottage! It was so hilly, and everyone I stopped to ask directions said "John's not home right now" you'll have to come back later. I did 'see' the cemetery and church so knew I was nearby - I should have recognized the 'needs a whitewash' and could have then sat in your lovely garden to wait fo you - but I woke up, sad I couldn't continue as it was so enjoyable. COVID seems to bring much more detail to dreams I'm finding - this one was in color too.

Hugs dear John - still hoping to visit in person some day.
    Mary -

  14. We've got quite enough bookshelves in our house already, so rather than acquire some more we focus on getting rid of books at the same rate we buy them. It seems to be working so far.

How marvelous to be able to do such a variety of tasks and hobbies - and so capably, too.
Do plan the white washing for a time when the sun isn't on that side of the cottage or you might get snow blindness.
Do you plan to apply colorful wrapping paper to the backs of those new bookshelves? Some folks do that.

    Hugs!

  19. I know just what you mean about piles of books...many of those here belonged to my husband and were ones even he had not looked at for years. I'm pleased to have found the strength to sort through them and make space for some of mine that have languished in the loft - even some less than literary tomes. If I enjoy them enough to read again, they deserve shelf space!

  22. You are indeed a man of many talents! You know when you own a home there is always something that needs to be repaired, replaced or painted! I try to accept that and then do jobs in order of necessity. It is worth it to own your own home!

I love the bookcase! I like having one closed section like that to hide messy items. Your books will look lovely on the shelves.

  23. Nice bookcase and storage cabinets below. Shelving for displaying art/books/collectibles adds to the decor. Good design choice. A few pieces of large canvas art will be beautiful. You're on a roll!

  24. I am liking your energy and zest.
Nice new home for your books.
How do you arrange your books, by topic,
color, size. . . the list goes on?
I lay some flat, some standing, some with
the opening facing out. Makes me reach in
to see what the book is all about.
    I noticed your book,
    The Boy, the mole,
    the fox and the Horse
    Someone gifted me the book
    and I have enjoyed!
Please have some holiday rest and good fun . . .

  27. Nice pile of books, John! I haven't read any of them but I hazard a guess that "World War N" might be some post-apocalyptic zombie-world yarn?

  28. I buy old books when I can find them at the charity shops and I found an old copy of Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage. There was a worn sticker on the cover stating that it belonged to Fremantle Prison and listing the conditions of borrowing, one of which was not to write in the books. Inside the cover page someone had written over and over again 'I am, I am,I am' and once 'I am going.' On a blank space at the back of the book they had written 'I love to see the evening sun go down' and further on 'St Louis Blues.' That is was possible to actually see the sun go down over the ocean from parts of the prison made it all the more sad.

  29. That's a good price for those pre-stretched canvases.

  30. Blimey! Those canvases were a bloody bargain! Our spare bedroom is 'amusingly' known as the Library. The shelves are filled to overflowing, and there are trashy novels in piles all over the floor. Throwing away books is sinful, but I do wish we could find someone who would enjoy them.
